A great little shop, but one thing I found funny is that the first week they were open I was talking to the owner and he shit on LVC saying it "wasn't true heritage, and isn't even made in the USA" and they now carry it.

Part of the appeal of "heritage"/"workwear" is the use of color (duck, denim, olive, etc...) and a slightly looser fit to certain garments.

Making everything slim/skinny and monochrome would be just that, monochrome streetwear.

To a certain extent you make a valid point. Problem is that with bike messengers it usually ends in techwear and with punk rockers it degenerates into that crusty look.

So a full on heritage build in monochrome would look off I think.

I don't know, it could look good and it's certainly an interesting thought excercise but I'm not sure it can actually be pulled off. It's far easier to incorporate some workwear/heritage garment into an outfit and make it monochrome than to take a complete workwear outfit and just dip it in black.

I disagree. It's always tailored well, but they still look like they're cosplaying in some GI's left behind clothing. Aspects ? Maybe. Styles ? Not really. You can't pull of a typical SLP look if you are massive, to take a random example.

Again, another typical example for a standard heritage look is the jeans.

That's one of the key elements of this look : jeans. A tall, skinny dude will probably go for a skinny / slim cut, which is fitted to his body, and this type of cut isn't really fitting with proper heritage. Proper heritage is mostly straight / tapered jeans.

as soon as you incorporate a specific idea into the style's name you make it inflexible. "workwear" is even worse because it invites stupid arguments about authenticity. "heritage" is not great because in a subtle way it discourages experimentation and innovation.

I like a lot of the brands involved in the scene. I like the emphasis on craftsmanship and the openness to looking to the past for inspiration. But I don't like the names we use to try to describe these things. When you have people saying "you can't wear that because you're not really going to work in it", it's clear that we've forgotten that the end goal is not an ideal or an identity. The end goal is fashion.

And a bit of leather obsession. That makes heritage a slightly better name, but not perfect, because the fits themselves need not be backward-looking: look at Engineered Garments, for example. And Americana just doesn't work because it leaves no room for European heritage brands, and doesn't quite do justice to the influence of Japan.

If there is a common thread through the style, it's the low culture of pre-globalization. But what do you call that?
