I have a leather backpack I keep some snacks and water and shit in (I have the beetus) if I'm gonna be walking around for a long time. I've had a total of 1 person even look at it sideways and he just said cool bag. I don't think it matters.

Of course they can. Question is if you think it looks good with you and if you're comfortable with it. Another option is a sling bag, but I can't imagine anyone carrying large amounts of stuff in a bag like that.

what is a good backpack to put patches on?

Anyone have a suggestion for a basic backpack with decent space and pockets that I can bring with me to work? I'll keep a handful of basic essentials in it (cologne, deodorant, toothbrush, etc.), sometimes shove my hat / clothes in it, and bring leftovers for lunch in a ziploc bag.
