What racer blades do you recommend for safety razors, Toying with the idea of getting a Merkur Futur.

anything but the pic you posted, DE or straight is all you should use

>> No.8739142

Ah responded in the old thread but it got 404'd.

For my face I've been using cheap disposable Gillette's but I'm probably going to upgrade to a DE kit.

For trimming/grooming I used a vintage braun electric passed down to me but it just broke and I'm probably going to replace it.

>> No.8739154

Is the Merkur 34c a good first DE razor?
Also, what is the best sample blade pack I can order? I am not sure if I should order a pack with one of each that has a bunch, or one with less brands but more of each blade.

>> No.8739162

depends on your skin and hair. astra sp's are forgiving and should be fine, plus they're dirt cheap. i usually use gillette 7 oclocks, they seem to have a good balance between forgiving and sharp. buy a sample pack with a few different kinds and see what works best

yep its fine. and probably more variety with less of each

What's so special about razors like merkur, surely it's all about the blade you put in it.

>> No.8739395

gillette proglide things are overpriced and pretty much shit after like 8 shaves.

contemplating getting a DE safety razor.

>> No.8739402

>>8739393
sure, a lot of it is the blade. but i dont think theres many people saying merkurs are so special, they're like thirty bucks

>> No.8739418

I like schick quattro

I bought the sensitive cartridges but they don't seem to work as well, I've had more nicks with them

>> No.8739439

>>8739393
Well it is more about just being a consistent brand.
The difference between safety razors can be angle, weight, how much blade is exposed, etc. The blade has a LOT to do with it, but a good handle will go a long ways as well.

>> No.8740406

>>8738808

Don't waste your money. A shave with a DE is not noticeably better than a two blade Gillette disposable as long as you shave after a shower with a decent shaving cream.

I use a Merkur 38C (which I like thanks to the longer handle, since I keep some stubble but shave my neck every morning).

OP, you probably DON'T want a Futur. I almost bought one as well, until I realized that the blades snap on rather than screwing on like they do on traditional safety razors. They're beautiful, yes, but people complain about the snapping mechanism pretty consistently. Maybe you'll like it though - who knows?

DE / straight razor shaving is just another hobby for boring middle aged men like train spotting and stamp collecting.

>> No.8741500

>>8740406

Not sure what to do. DE shaving takes an initial investment but it's cheaper in the long run as long as you don't get into it as a hobby.

One one hand:
>Gillette disposables cheap af (can get mega Costco pack and last years)
>Use organic shaving cream, routine is simple and easy and doesn't mess with face
>But not environmentally friendly
>Also realize I enjoy the act of shaving like an enthusiast with a DE/Straight does

On the other hand:
>DE is cooler, lasts longer and cheaper in the long run after investing
>If shave is similar to disposable then whats the point?
>Also don't want to have the chance of fucking up my face, kind of scary for beginners

Wat do.

Is dry shaving worse for acne than wet shaving?

>> No.8741609

>>8741516

I can't really say so, since I've been wet shaving all my life, but I would think so. IF you're using one of these new self-cleaning electric shavers adnd apropriate cleaning products.

So far I've used blades by Merkur, Rothbart (owned by Gillette iirc) Persona and Feather.
Out of these four I would recommned the Merkur or Persona. Both are very good, but while the Persona will last you 2-3 shaves (all depends on your facehair ofc) the Merkur blade will probably hold an edge for 3-4 shaves. Rothbart felt incredibly shit and Feather is just sharp as hell. No matter how light I shaved with these, I always looked like I've been mauled by a Doberman.

What do you guys think of no,cream just cold water for shaving?

I do this and generally have no problem while using a Gillette fusion. Should I keep on keeping on? I plan on going to a safety razor soon, and am not sure if lubrication is a requirement.

>> No.8741750

>>8741703

Wow, please try that and show pics afterwards. With these Mach15 razors you can not cut yourself, not matter how hard you press or if you use shaving cream / soap or not.

With a DE razor you should always shave after a hot shower or soaking your face with a hot towel. Then use a badger brush to apply a nice shaving cream or soap to your beard and let it sink in. Really massage the stuff with the brush into the hair and let it sit there. Do something else, brush your teeth, form a frohawk, clean your ears, whatever.
Then you shave with a DE razor.

look at maggard's razors. you can build a sampler pack. don't listen to anyone who tells you to buy a certain brand of blades. try some out for yourself and see which works best.

Damn, I wish I would have saw this before I ordered some. Ended up going with a sample pack with one of each for like 12 bucks. Oh well, still a good jump off point, and Maggard doesn't have BIC which I've heard good things about for coarse faces.

Decided to upgrade my crappy Van Der Hogen set while I was at it.

So my initial set up is gonna be:
Merkur 34c
Razor to be decided
Proraso - shave soap
Proraso - aftershave (I am staying safe with this since I don't wanna smell old or something)
And this badger and blade blonde boar brush. For the price, I read some great things on it and is better than a lot of entry badger brushes so I said why not.
Wish me luck, /fa/! Hopefully I can finally stop butchering myself with my cartridge on my face.
