>> No.8729838

I've owned some Red Wings on the same sole as the Iron Ranger and holy shit are they uncomfortable.
And Wolverines have a lot of QC issues honestly I wouldnt go with either of them. Maybe Red Wings on a commando or vibram sole if you must

The wolverines are going to be more dressy, iron rangers are more of a work boot.

Red Wing Iron Rangers. Surprisingly I get alot of compliments on them.

Also, as >>8729838 said, some may consider them uncomfortable. They have a very stiff flat sole. I have flat feet and the boots dont bother me at all, though.

How long did you have them without insoles? Mine compressed to my foot shape in about 2-3 months but, I also wore them with thick wool socks to alleviate the pain from wearing them all day. They are currently my most comfortable pair of shoes though.

I've got two pairs of Iron Rangers, one pair of Thousand Miles, and a pair of Alden 403's. In terms of durability and aesthetic, Alden does it best. Thousand Miles are great looking, but the leather sole makes them less durable and less comfortable on rough terrain. copper looks better for the browns imo

everyone on earth has amber - i mean it

copper has that wonderful "instant patina" effect
amber is uniform and kinda boring

>>8737556
>If you are willing to pay more, go Alden. If not, go for the Iron Rangers.
this may have been true once upon a time, but not now

alden appear's to have been doing something very sneaky with their shit
very underhanded if it's true

basically it goes like this:
in terms of construction materials, the three choices (1k's, IR's, indy's) are all over the place
BUT
RW's offer the most consistently decent construction materials, even if they don't use overhyped chromexcel like the other two (they use it badly most of the time anyway; compare 1k's and indy's with say white's or viberg's cuts of chromexcel and you'll instantly see what i mean)

wolverine's use a fiberboard insole
no quality shoemaker uses fiberboard - it's a corner cutting, cost-saving (for them) tactic
they are not considered to be a durable compared to full grain leather insoles
and don't break-in in the same way

alden, up until recently, did use full grain leather insoles. however, word on the street is that they're decided to cheap-out and use split leather insoles - this is another cut corner/cost cutting (for them, esp. considering they're >$500 and counting each quarter) method no decent bootmaker would use
ever

if this is true alden's are even more of a rip than they may consider to be now

RW, no matter what you may think of their aesthetic, still uses real, full grain leather insoles
have their own tannery, so don't rely on optimizing their horween cuts like alden and 1k (reason for all the funky leather you see on their boots - cut corners again)

a decent, humble choice if you can swallow the bulbous toe look

alden aren't worth it - if you're paying 500++ for subpar materials just skip them

So I bought a 3 pairs of Iron Rangers in varying sizes and I'm having issues trying to figure out the size.

How far in should your toes be within the toebox? I've had various info stating not to size up because you need to break the IR in and that there's an uncomfortable break-in process. I'm wondering if the less than comfortable smaller sizes is ideal?

Also, the inner stitching within the boot seems to be floppy and rubbing/chaffing against my ankle. Is this a quality issue?

Thanks everyone.

Sorry, but the Wolverines are entirely unsuitable for any kind of rough weather (unless you attach a half-vibram, which is more trouble and money than the alternatives and is less durable anyway)

The RW Iron Ranger or Beckman would be more suited as the leather is more 'rugged' (i.e. looks better when unpolished) than the Wovlerine, and more importantly they both feature good quality soles that are suited to both rough and city conditions. I'd recommend the Beckmans, and also that whatever you get make sure to break them in before you leave - I'm sure you'd hate to get blisters on day 2

what are you expecting exactly?
they comfy boots - feel like sneakers because of the cushioning inside

nothing spectacular
and certainly not worth the 320+ whatever it costs to get them

anybody from new england here? i want to get a pair of one of these companies.
I could have made the image wider, but then what would you squint at?

how have your soles held up?
(how long until you think you'll need a resole?)

>> No.8746700

Fine so far.

I figure since they're leather they'll hold up fine as long as I keep them away from water.

I figure I'll get at least two years like most other boots.

>> No.8746710

>>8746700
how long have you had them?
I'm thinking just getting a cobbler to glue a sole protector on them to prolong them since wolverine doesn't do resoles themselves

I get compliments about my boots all the fucking time by women.

Nice boots specifically stand out as something that can be commented on.

yeah, maybe in some pleb region where everyone wears rags and sneakers and flipflops in summer

in better parts of the world no one gives a shit about boots

I'm just being impatient I guess. I'd just hope that they don't have anything sloppy like missed / loose stitches or whatever. this is my first time getting anything made to order so I didn't really realize how long it was gonna take.

Funnily enough on my pair the stitching was, for all intents and purposes, flawless.
Not the same can be said of my Vibergs.

Yeah. Wtf.

Did you go massdrop? Probably the best time to get them.

I'm considering Sagara next to experiment with. They're cheaper and Cheval and can do stitchdown or GY welt rather than Cheval's blake/rapid.

No i just went MTO. they cost me $345 total. I got em in natty cxl instead of that brown color. Whoever i've been e-mailing said that they're coming out with a more expensive goodyear-welted version of their boots soon.

the sagara imperial IV is a really nice looking last IMO.

/fa/ in a nutshell

>> No.8747760

So if the 1ks are shit quality, what is the alternative for a minimal boot like that?

>> No.8748138

>>8747760
they're not, but you do need to have seen and tried the very pair you might own yourself so you can check for possible defects (as you would with any other pair really).

Some people on /fa/ *really* dislike wolverines, but actually the 1ks are fine. As it's been said, what you need to keep in mind is how different they look from the IR, and go from there looking at the different criteria.

that's just undyed edge dressing
you could probably request that they stain it or you could color it yourself
