how i do it:
after shower, dry my hair with towel, leaving it damp.
apply hair gel (or mousse, both have a similar effect for me) throughout hair from the roots, not too much.
blow dry hair and use a hair brush (pic related) to push hair upwards.

Use matte wax like already stated. When you use wax, you should be applying at a specific time to your hair. you should shower beforehand. (if you shower at night stop doing that, hair needs to be free from oil.) That being said, dont do no poo. You dont want oils in your hair because it diminishes the ability of the wax to hold. As well, you should apply product after showering, but when your hair has just passed the point of being damp where its not wet but still feels cold. If you wait until its already completely dry you might as well re-wet it and wwait for what i said. If you do this, product will work much better without requiring anywhere near as much. Matte wax's i recommend are B for men from bedhead or paul mitchell's matte wax.

Anything works for that length in hair. I buzzed last year and when I was at about your length, I used a $3 Suave Styling Paste. Works flawlessly and isn't greasy.

If you're growing your hair out, start nopoo. It's easier with short hair and will look healthy when long. Wash with lukewarm or cold water daily; condition every other day. Day 5 is the worse if you get greasy hair butt your sebaceous glands begin to reset afterwards and it looks wonderful.

You should learn to cut your own hair. It isn't hard at all. I had a friend who became a stylist and had her teach me what she knew in about an hour. The rest was just practice. It's surprisingly hard to fuck up.

I'm thinking of saying fuck it and going a tad shorter, and then using a texturizer and accepting a messy look.

The way I see it, unless your hair is PLASTERED with hairspray, your hair WILL fall out of place during the day. And without a mirror, you have no control where it goes. All these models have hair that stays in place for one pic. They can't actually walk around like that. Better to go for a messy look in the first place, so everything is normal. Pic related I guess.
