I had very similar hair to you most of high school and it's been my experience to never fuck with the back. you can play around a lot with how the front of your hair lies, but if you taper the back you can't change bun position or into a ponytail or just plain down easily. it looks fine. if it bothers you go lower with your 'bun' (really just a ponytail so far) so you can include that hair. be wary of the rat tail look however

I'm wavy/straight. usually after 8 months there's enough weight to pull out the worst of the waves. have you tried tying some up and letting the back hang?
