but once you hit 21 if you wanted to go to uni/tafe/do an apprenticeship the relevance of your atar approaches zero

I did a pathway into a bachelor of honors by university articulation. Most universities offer some form of TAFE to Bachelor pathway, with the best scenario of being 2 + 2 years and the average scenario being about 2 + 2.5 years. So you're likely going to take an extra semester or so by articulating, but you're also likely to save some money as TAFE is cheaper, healthcare card subsidized and you get a qualification at the mid-point of four years. Better yet, go associate degree -> bachelor. I wish I did, you get a fairer articulation agreement.

Personally, I did an Advanced Diploma of Engineering Design to my Bachelor of Civil [honors]. The atar requirement for the Adv. Dip was literally like 35, all the wog dropkicks dropped out of TAFE by literally two months in, most of the introductory courses are easier than VCE and by a year in you're smashing CALCII. I had to write a 30-40 page report [8k words] as one of my first courses into TAFE.

I would strongly advise against you becoming an actor. At the very minimum pursue some form of trade in construction, with your acting and safeway on the side. You may not want to get your hands or faggy clothing dirty, but you're going to be much better off long-term. Find something in construction that you enjoy.

Uni cuts start in 2016, so make up a solid decision before then. Construction is getting 10 billion in it, medicine and research even more post-budget.

Just in the two years of being at TAFE, I saw multiple education cuts from Labor. The program went from 2500 yr to 4500 yr [or 100 to 700 for HC card users] disregarding Labour being -pro education-

I have no doubt in the governments ability to drive education into the ground, and a shitposter on 4chan thinking otherwise is naive.

Egh, you can make a decent living working at Safeway, especially since I think they're unionized. No reason to discourage someone from creative work, especially when they have a backup plan.

Construction's good, though. Great, true story: Harrison Ford was a carpenter until he made it, and actually built Joan Didion's California house.

The more important issue here: the guy's backup-backup plan is being a *cop*. Why would you want to become a violent upholder of a failing social order, hated or at least mistrusted by nearly everyone outside your profession?

More crucially to you, it's bad for your soul. There's this little exchange from some Raymond Chandler novel that gets at it perfectly: "Cops are people, too." "They were once."

Consistently, from people who know people who became cops, I hear the same story: decent person enter police academy, emerges brutal and blunted, except, frequently, for an anger problem. If the academy doesn't do it, a very short time on the beat does.

The problem with Safeway is that there is very limited room for promotion. You're likely going to build up to a Store Manager, with many positions above that reserved for people with a qualification in business or project management skills. Not to mention that many positions in retail are accessible to people straight out of highschool or people of lower payment bracket [teenagers], allowing for a larger selection of employment pool. There is reduced risk in retail in comparison to other professional occupations, and therefore the rewards and payment are reflected of that.

The harder your occupation is to be qualified in, the more dangerous the job or the larger potential for consequence or risk, the better the payment and room for opportunity.

Retail is more solid than practically any field in entertainment, and STEM is more solid than practically any field in retail. Most professions produce a very livable lifestyle regardless of choice, though.

>more solid

See, that doesn't seem to matter too much when

>Most professions produce a very livable lifestyle regardless of choice, though.

Is true. Sure, pursue STEM if it actually interests you, not because you think you can take cube work for a big check. Pursue retail if you enjoy it, or if it works for you. Blanket prescriptions beyond "don't become a cop, FFS" aren't terribly useful.

IMO, day to day working conditions and life flexibility are the most important things about revenue streams.

Lel, a guy I went to school with got expelled and tried to burn down the library when he got moved there.

UWA is probably more pretentious but you get a better education (Curtin just had massive budget cuts). It depends on what you do though- all the engineers are especially up themselves because they think the mining boom is still in full swing and they'll immediately get a $150K+ job when a mining firm picks them up straight out of uni.
