The style is called a polish plait (there is a Wikipedia article) or a monodread. The style is linked to several cultures, diseases, and spiritual reasons. It's not very healthy for your hair if you don't take care of it daily, because it peels the protective layer of your hair and exposes the weak side, that gets smelly and gross very quickly.
The best part is because you don't allow your scalp any room, dandruff, lice(nests), blood, puss and insects will get stuck in it, it's like carrying a disease on your head.

I collected all these pics from several corners of the internet. I had a huge obsession with these a little while ago, probably because I aleways liked the huge, messy natural dreadlock style, not that backcombed and crocheted trend shit. Tough the difference between the natural dreadlocks and the polish plait is that the natural dreadlocks are actually healthy for your hair and makes it naturally strong (with all hair types), but the polish plait just ruins the natural state of it and transforms into a log of shit.

i had one in the past, but with a healthy look, some of these are really gross... here we call it beaver tail...
