about $1,000

once I get a job in my qualified field that pays 60-75K that number will likely go up to 3,000
the only thing that could get me to spend more than that on a watch would be some kind of commemorative special occasion piece (first child, 50th birthday etc)

Uh...unless the previous owner is an idiot who let water get inside it and didn't do anything about (which I doubt), routine service should not require replacement of many, if any, parts. Armari watches are shitty fashion watches I wouldn't buy, but

>You know you are paying 200$ for a 50$ watch right?

With Seiko 5 you are paying 90$ for 20$ watch
With Rolex you are paying 5000$ for 500$ watch
With Patek you are paying 30,000$ for 1000$ watch
etc

Just saying that watches are luxury items you can't justify with price, you are not buying a wrench here. Also things like marketing eats at a big chunk.

He's partially correct. The more a watch costs for its retail price, the more inefficiently it has been manufactured. I would suspect that a large portion of a luxury watches manufacturing process has been budgeted for the labour of highly skilled specialist workers for quality control processes.

Unfortunately, these are largely unnecessary and inefficient means of production to justify a higher end-product retail price and a respective higher percentage of profit margin attached to said product or service.

Utilizing highly technological machinery could produce, assemble and finish luxury brand watches at greater speed and efficiency than the circle-jerked expects sitting on stools for hours a day - and a $10 screw which luxury manufacturers may use would not have a greater tensile or shear strength over a $0.5 screw. Assuming 20% profit margin on your overall product though, that's comparing $2 to $0.1

Invictas - justifiably - get a lot of hate. However, this watch switched to a NH35A movement a few years ago and is actually an amazing deal. If you're not willing to spend more for the sub look, it's the best there is. A hacking, hand-winding automatic movement for $80 is a steal. It is the one worth Invicta watch there is.

That said, the things like Steinhart that people mention get great reviews. It all depends on how much you want to spend.

Yes and it's more on the thick side of things. My wrists are between 6''5' and 7''. Asians have oftentimes even 6''. That being said I don't like the clown size watches these days anyway. >> No.8421210

It really depends. I'm sitting on a 6.75 wrist at 15% bodyfat and a relatively overall skinny physique. Dropping my bodyfat percentage could probably drop me down to a bare wrist minimum of approximately 6.5 inches. On a Rodina for example, i'm sitting on the 4th hole out of 7 - and the 38 diameter face fits really well given my wrist size.

Some people genetically have larger limb structures, and could hit over 7 inches easy. I don't think it's fair to say that 7.6 inches is normal just because you've got a bodyfat circumference of over an inch stored round your wrist - you're either built with a large wrist circumference or you're left short a little.

>always have to set
If you're wearing your watch with any sort of regularity you should not have to keep on setting it. Especially at the price range and quality that you're alluding to with your Seamaster. Accuracy/variance per day is usually pretty small once you're hitting that level, too.

Everyone knows what advantages quartz has, but, honestly, if you're spending that kind of money, I don't know why you would get a quartz watch. The quartz movement inside costs almost nothing -- you're paying out the ass for something that should be way cheaper (and watches of all sorts are already overpriced nowadays in the price bubble we're in).

I'm (stereotypically, considering what we're discussing) a fan of the engineering and history behind mechanical watches. In a day and age where you can get precisely accurate time from your smart phone I don't know why people think that there is an argument for true quartz superiority unless you really need it for what you do (i.e., commercial diving). If you're wearing a watch it's to appreciate what it is, otherwise you're better off going cheaper.

Just my opinion, though. As long as you like what you buy, that's what matters.

>> No.8422662

I would like to point out that the seamaster, which is actually a dive watch, is a little more appropriate in quartz than other watch styles would be

>> No.8422686

>>8422662
The "lol technicality" argument would be that your battery will randomly die that one time (I chuckle when I see people say this: it's technically true, but c'mon).

While I can see what you mean, a mechanical in that range (well, honestly, any range unless it's broken) will be perfectly accurate during the time interval that you are diving. On top of that, anything that would stop your watch would stop BOTH quartz and mechanical (mainly water leakage from forgetting to secure the crown).

There isn't really a practical difference in that scenario. If you're a hardcore/commercial diver then you have specialized equipment for all of that, anyways.

>> No.8422694

>>8422662
>>8422686
Actually, I think I might be slightly incorrect. I would actually expect the water to stop the quartz movement before the mechanical one simply because quartz uses electricity. If water gets in your watch you're likely fucked either way, but it shouldn't brick a mechanical immediately unless there's a confluence of factors (or just some extreme situation).

I'm not a watch enthusiast, I like to set and forget. At the same time I don't want to run around looking like pleb. That doesn't mean I don't have a 2824-2 as well and appreciate the general idea of mechanical watches.

I've worn this watch for three full days and am willing to answer any questions about this watch if anyone is either interested or is thinking about ordering one. This watch looks and wears entirely differently in person than any pictures you can find online of the watch.

>This watch looks and wears entirely differently in person than any pictures you can find online of the watch.

for better or worse, and what do you think of its build quality?

>> No.8424706

>>8424670

I can only talk about the June 2014 batch - some previous batches have had different variations of thicker hands, a silver-ish watch face, more prevalent concentric circles on the sub-dial and a cheaper leather band. The current build has a white face, very minuscule concentric circles, thin hands and a rather pleasant leather band [that people may want to replace].

When the watch arrives, you get the impression of the watch being much smaller than portrayed online. Although the watch has large dimensions on paper [38mm + lug length, probably just over 42mm effective length], in person the watch actually seems rather small - which is a good thing as it has been designed to accommodate people of 6-7 inch wrists [or the average male]. You hold the watch in your hand, and it just feels small and very solid. My teenage sister tried the watch on too, and it did not appear ridiculously large, disregarding the fact that her wrist is smaller than my 6.75.

Also, in terms of its visual impact, it looks much different in person than it does online. This is primarily because the watch is much more condensed and the face printing much more sharp than portrayed in most user-submitted pictures. Excluding the rather bad choice in font for "Rodina, Automatic", the number printing and minute dashes look very sharp in person. People have magnified the printing by over 50x on the watchuseek forums, and even then the face printing seems reasonably sharp.

The build quality is as you would expect from a $120 watch. Unfortunately, I don't have any big dollar or reputable watch brands to compare against, but the watch has reasonable weight behind it and the sapphire face has [so far] held up very well against a few knocks and scratches against my wooden desk, etc. The watch protrudes out around 10mm, therefore impacts to the watch face are seemingly common, especially since the watch is -all- face.

The watch has strong presence. Three complements in three days.

I had this one for about 9 months. Theres a metal bar that keeps the band attached to the time piece that kept popping out so I stopped wearing mine completely.

Pretty watch though. You get what you pay for and $20 dollars isn't much.

Tell me, effay, are there any examples of someone wearing a watch with both:

1. a dark, dark brown leather strap

AND

2. a black face

I want to see if its possible for to look good, or if the two colors are immergable.
