In my mind, patience and dedication are really what is lacking in those who want to grow a beard. The left picture is about a month to a month and a half of beard growth. At that point it starts getting patchy on the cheeks, but if I were to wait longer my mustache would connect to my beard and my cheeks would fill out.

Getting through that period of looking like shit, not like I already don't look like shit, is difficult so It's just easier to shave at that point. I feel like most folk wouldn't want to bother with this awkward transition and just give up. I've had buddies who complain of shitty beard genetics actually begin to sport a foundation for a passable beard after a week of camping. Pirlo isn't human though, It's unfair to compare oneself to him.
