Hi /fa/

Hopefully at least one or two of you will remember me from the two or three threads I made sometime last year (and subsequently got banned as I was 17) documenting the start of my mayul muddling career (the first thread I made was asking for advice on a profile pic to make my ex gf jealous, and after posting a few photos, /fa/ told me to try submitting pictures to a modeling agencies which eventually pushed me to actually do it).

Now that I am 18 years old (my bday is today) I can finally post about my modeling career, which has recently moved me from AZ to a model apartment in NYC in a period of about seven months modeling (3 months signed in ny). with that, I am signed with RE:Quest Models in NY and FORD RB back home (and I am currently courting a few agencies for asian markets, LA, milan, paris, and london) I was on option/reserve (though that didnt necc. mean I would be used) for the June Euro fashion week shows for Calvin Klein, Valentino, and Alexander McQueen (and to add, I will definitely be in some European shows for August beyond reserve/option). ive heard from my NY agents (though honestly idk) that Gucci and Burberry were interested in seeing/casting me soon for their stuff. I just got my first exclusive out with the fashionisto a few days ago and ive got some upcoming magazine editorials that I'll bump with down below.

So those are my credentials to prove I'm not some fake wannabe model delusionally insisting that i'm the real deal. the reason im posting here is bc /fa/ directly lead to this career path for me with the couple threads i posted on here. so i'm not on here for ego reasons (modeling does that enough) but because i'm grateful to the /fa/ community for pushing me towards modeling and directly leading me to my international career and (i hope) success.

so yeah. ask me anything or if youre in the industry contribute or w/e. i don't give a shit if you figure out who i am but i thought id just let /fa/ know what they did for me.

Yeah, everyone is pretty great. It's weird that they say that the industry is so brutal because everybody I've met with has been awesome. agents, casting directors, models -- everybody. The designers and photographers are most interesting though because you get to see them try to fit you into their artistic vision and while you may not get it at first, in post it just sorta pops out what they were thinking with a shot or an article of clothing or whatnot. the most 'famous' models i know are my roommates really (and some 'model' from dem white boyz on vine with like 5 million followers but he was a little.. idk. i don't think he really counts as a model since most of the signing work is a promotional stunt obviously). but my agents know the agents for a couple supermodels which is fun

nah man most people in the industry are a lot older than i am. i just started a bit early. the female model industry is a lot more concerned with that sorta thing and being too old and that sorta shit (men get to stay in the industry forever in comparison to girls). i know some 26-27 yo male models, so go for it. i think it goes even beyond that maybe idk. as far as getting into the industry, just attend open calls and send in pictures as 'wikihow' as that sounds. if you've got a cool look, you will definitely get picked out of the rest. also it's easier bc so few new males attend open calls / send in stuff (as opposed to girls where every girl thinks they can be a model.) also don't cross off big agencies bc you think you won't get noticed. the scarcity of males having the balls to get started helps you for agencies of all sizes.

I am in NYC, every day I interact with new people I am asked if I model, every time I post here and throughout tumblr people give me a lot of compliments and say I should model.

The issue is I am 5'11" I sent my pictures into this industry person who said they loved my face but wanted measurements and so I never responded back.

Is there a point doing this? I do not want to be a low tier model. I want enough work to atleast do this full time a year and do it as my sole occupation.

Wwyd?

i shave my thighs bc it makes what little muscle i have there (as i really never have worked on my legs) more accentuated, but never calves. for guys, there's often no makeup for what they call test shoots (which are free for both the photographer and the model where they both get to use the pics for their portfolios) and hair is often improvised or done quickly. test shoots typically can go between 4-8 hours, sometimes more or less. the paid ones on the other hand can run up to a twelve hour workday (probably 3 for hair, makeup, wardrobe if there are other models) because they like to have some diverse shots. i spend most of the time during paid/real shoots on my phone or waiting, because getting lighting and stuff set up can take hours on its own. so yeah, i'd say they average out to a ten hour workday but bc you're not doing anything for the majority of it, it's really exhausting.

the tricky thing is that because the market is so saturated, a lot of times industry people won't get back to you either because they forget or because something else came up.. my trick for that sort of situation is to keep in contact with as many industry people as possible but keep it all surface level in terms of your commitments / your reliance on each person. they most often will put a bit of effort into a new face or someone they see potential in, but not enough to where you should be relying on one guy, you know? just try to give the impression to those sorts of people that your commitments aren't forever and that you're looking out for you. as shitty as it sounds, just make acquaintances in the industry. make lots of connections but never rely on them alone. i havent had too much exp with this sort of thing but the one thing i'd say is that you really should use the internet to your advantage - send in pictures to all sorts of agencies (even if they're not your ideal agency) so that you're not ever leaning on the support of one or two people.

also if you're 5'11" (unless you're really on the edge between 5'10" and 5'11") just say you're 6' which sounds an insane amount better than 5'11". most often they won't measure you on the spot and if they do you can correct your posture to be a little taller than usual. for example, i am factually 6'3" but 6'2" comes off better so i say that and nobody has really cared.

i'd definitely say keep trying though it's (cont)

definitely a living once you break in, but for most people that can take years at a time. chances are it'll be a while before you're able to do it as your sole occupation, as much as i hate to say it (i got extremely lucky with my situation). but in your case i'd say stick with smaller agencies because they're able to cater more to your niche market (if you say you're six foot, you'll be perfectly fine getting an agency so long as your look is interesting), whatever it is. the only problem is that it's sometimes difficult to tell if the smaller agencies are good for you or not.. which i honestly havent figured out yet. it's really difficult to tell unless it's too late but just use your senses - look for ones that look purposefully selective. market yourself across different niche markets using different pictures for different agencies (some are more edgy and some are less so) and you'll have broken into the industry soon enough. hope that was helpful.

you definitely can if you're patient but it's difficult for most models. once you've been in the industry for a couple years though, things start getting a lot easier. as far as my salary goes, i guess a liberal estimate for how much i'll make this year would be like ~65k maybe a bit less. i did a lot of editorial this year which pays more though. and yeah, i guess you could make a lifelong career out of it (especially with the male market e.g., david gandy) but your market potential shrinks hugely after like 33-ish or so i've heard
>>8380912
ooooooooooooohhhhh okay i get you now. don't worry about it; there are way more opportunities. you shouldnt beat yourself up over it bc it's after the measurements and that sorta thing that you'll be able to tell if an agency is the right fit for you. so had you sent in measurements and pictures and all that, it still might not have been a good fit.

very stuck up. it's not even funny. basically male models just fuck girls, smoke weed, workout, and sleep whenever they're not shooting or w/e. i swear to god at the model apartment we do those things and watch surfing videos together. that's it. it's a pretty relaxed environment and because everyone knows they're at least pretty good looking, there's no real competitive shit or anything like that. it's perfect because everybody is just content with everything going on in their lives all the time. female models on the other hand... i think it stems from the fact that a surprising number of girls are constantly trying to be models but can't whereas with males it's rare for the average guy to just spontaneously get into it: attractive guys don't feel inadequate just because they aren't male models whereas with girls it's a point of weakness to not have an objective measure of beauty like a modeling contract. basically i think the ultimate measure of beauty for a girl who's actually gonna get into modeling is having 'model status' so when she finally gets it and when it moves her out to nyc where people treat her like royalty she becomes a psycho self-obsessed egomaniac (almost like kanye but w/o the great music to show for it). i can't even put it into words it's so weird. none of my roommates will fuck model girls period (with a few exceptions here and there) which should say a lot given what they're sacrificing.

i'll admit, i am being liberal. that's a best case scenario assuming i get all the jobs i'm up for and that things work out exactly as planned. they likely won't which i'm absolutely willing to acknowledge. but that is a very real figure were things to go totally right in my career over the next couple months -- and even off that, the year is like halfway over so i'm just taking what i expect to make off summer/spring stuff and doubling that to compensate for the winter season. it's not perfect, i admit, but i said i was being liberal and my salary (before taxes) very definitely will be in that ballpark. you've got to realize i do this 9-5, 5 days a week. i moved to new york city - the most expensive city in the world - for this so it's safe to say that it's not a hobby for me at this point. it's a job.

yeah it's kinda shitty though because when that happens you have to forfeit actual money which sucks. so yeah, they do but only the stingy smaller companies. not bonuses though no.
>>8381054
it cut off the rest of my comment but basically expenses for travelling and stuff (which i often pay myself) make this a lot lower than it seems and also taxes off the top. i dunno man i just tried to give an estimate, not trying to be disingenuous - i haven't even been doing this for a year so as i said i just doubled what i expect (excluding expenses) from the non-winter/fall season yo.

Not OP, but my friend walked in the past two Saint Laurent shows and he got to keep both of the outfits. Ironically, he knows absolutely nothing about fashion and when I told him he could sell a jacket for 5K he literally said, "Why the fuck would anybody do that?" Such is life. He wears the clothes when he goes out though, so he knows they're special he just doesn't understand it.

Not OP again, but honestly the first step, obviously, is to get very physically fit. And not in the /fit/ sense of the word, just very lean and have everything tight, no jiggling and no fat, just pure muscle. After you've either lost weight or gained muscle (preferably both), get a versatile haircut and make sure you keep a close shave to have clear skin. Once the looks are there have a friend take a front, side, and full body photo of you standing in front of a blank wall with no facial expressions (you can suck in those cheeks a bit though, all models do it especially when on the runway). Send in those photos to agencies close to you, it's EXTREMELY helpful if you live in NY, LA, Paris, Milan, or London, and if not find some in the biggest city closest to you. If you live in Florida, Miami; if you live in Washington, Seattle, etc. They'll get back to you if you're generally 6'1"-6'3" and are either clasically handsome (think RJ King) or have a unique look (Cole Mohr). But aside from that, you can go to open calls (mainly in the cities I mentioned) and try those as well, but make sure to ring in those photos with you as well so they have something to remember you by. Above all else, having a soccer player's body is typically ideal (i.e: Edinson Cavani) and can work for designers/brands ranging from Dior Homme to Versace. Don't be an asshole and you can get jobs! :)

Well, not being rude at all, but you're very normal looking; if you know what I mean? Noma Han is a notable Asian model, and it's because he's very striking. If anything, I think losing weight (restrict caloric intake and do some cardio) to expose your potential facial aesthetics. There's African models, Brazilian models, Caucasian models, Asian models, etc. you just have to see what you're made of (literally lol)

>>8381195
there are niche markets for just about anybody that still has a symmetrical face (however disproportionate it is doesn't matter e.g., a lot of the more edgy looking models) but for the big agencies, it boils down to height really - the designers aren't gonna custom make something for a 5'6" frame or a 6'5" one most always. But weight and stuff is variable on the market. LA is more editorial and thus is more muscular whereas ny (while it's really both as it's the fashion capital of the world) is a bit more thin for runway stuff and Europe is very thin. So yeah, have symmetrical features and an interesting look and you definitely have a shot
>>8381213
>>8381225
Thank you, that's really nice of you.
>>8381238
Well, yeah. Being a model doesn't make someone attractive, and it doesn't particularly bother me that you don't find me attractive as everybody has their preferences and stuff. I'm willing to post pics of myself and out myself to /fa/ because it's me doing it and if anything happens out of it is my fault, but can't do that to my girlfriend because then she has to deal with the consequences of me posting her on an image board she's never heard of which is unfair to her.

Well, in regards to acting, you either have to be extremely attractive (Kutcher, Cruise, etc. and as you already know height isn't a factor in acting). Or you can actually be a talented actor or just be an epic funneh xD faggot and make it, think Jonah Hill or Seth Rogen. They're both fat ugly fucks but because they're "likable" they get noticed. You have a pretty friendly face (and btw the second shot of you is 100X better, use that one) so I think if you took some classes or studied on your own you could land a gig. If you don't already live in LA and really want to make it in the entertainment industry you pretty much have to move out there. I'd recommend graduting/getting a degree first since the chances won't come knocking. Have a back up plan.
