i meant to say quartz and mechanical, not chronograph and mechanical. i just happen to like chronographs more.

no benefits of having mechanical. people like them here because they function on movement i.e. they are powered by movement of the parts. quartz run on battery. so people like them because of the engineering or whatever

they tend to be more expensive. and uglier imo

Oh well.

Yes, I dont dive, but i like them anyways. The fact that they are (theoretically) made for diving gives them also some other qualities that make for a very good tool watch:

Easy readable
Robust
Waterproff

And I really like the added utility of the rotating bezel!

I am traveling a lot by train and I use it as a "marker" when i have to change trains at a station. Set the 0 at the minute my next rain goes, and i can quickly and easily glance how much time i have, if i can just casualy walk to the next platform, if i have to run or if i can just give up.

Also it makes for a nice, rudimentary stopwatch and timer.

Well if you insist:
Firstly it's automatic, which means just shake it and it's running again. No batteries, no wining it up manually. The Seiko 5 is also notorious for being unbreakable. It's the Kalashnikov of watches. My father got himself one when he was twenty. The things still running. The movement is not only very sturdy, but also pretty precise. Last but not least, I got mine two years ago and wear it 3-4 days a week. It still has to get a scratch on the glass.
Plus it's somewhere between 50 and 100 bucks which is cheap for an automatic watch.

Your mechanical is aligned no better than a quartz. You just can't tell because it doesn't stop long enough for you to see it.

The misaligned tick is a pet peeve for me on quartz. I have one good Eco-Drive that has a perfect second hand and it took me a year of looking to find it.

pfft hahahaha

In all honesty though, I agree with you. I have my grandfather's Seiko 5, which he got in the early 70's. I'm assuming that it hasn't been serviced in the past 40 something years, but the damned watch keeps on ticking (with so-so accuracy). These things last.

The subdial is clear with the markings and numbers printed on it. The hand is underneath, connected to the seconds post. Sitting between the hand and the seconds post is the white background of the subdial. The entire subdial is moving.

Instead of watching the hand turn as it goes around the subdial, try looking at the center of the hand: it will look like the movement of a normal seconds hand.

Alternatively, draw a Cartesian plane with a domain of [-5,5] and a range of the same. Take another color and draw lines connecting (0,0) and (0,5), (1,0) and (0,4), (2,0) and (0,3), (3,0) and (0,2), (4,0) and (0,1), and (5,0) and (0,0). Repeat this for each quadrant and you will end up with that thing they show in the beginning of the video.
