Why are expensive watches this shitty? The junghans chronoscope also has a very scratch-sensitive crystal. Why don't they use gorilla glass? And where can I get a watch like one of these but with a proper crystal?

I'm thinking of buying pic related for use on more formal or business occasions. I'm sceptical about Esprit as a watch brand, but if you look at it from a pure style point of view - would it work well with a decent suit and shirt?

The alternative would be a Tissot that's ~300$ more expensive and whose design I actually like a little less.

Anything else you could recommend in that style?

Quartz indeed and to be honest, I use it. I actually picked out the triple date intentionally because I am retarded and can't remember months. Partially cos I'm just unaware of what time it is in general but also cos english is my second language and when I was a kid I didn't want to learn the months so the calendar still fucks with me a tiny bit. Confusing march and may, june and july and the order of pretty much all months that weren't November-February was a huge issue for me under the age of 12 or so and it stuck a bit.

You do realise its possible to CHANGE A STRAP on a watch right? If you like the face of that watch you can just BUY a strap of your choosing and PUT IT ON.
I put the important parts in caps lock.

Or did you mean something like the tissot but cheaper?

I only suggested it because I was a quartz only man myself and had the same budget you did. I prefer automatics now.
Fair enough though, if you only want the aesthetics then you can go with that one.

There are some nice options in the sub £500 range if you consider brands like Steinhart and Stowa. Check them out to see if any style appeals to you.
Seiko are the best budget watch brand, check out the SARB065 (excellent dress watch, very handsome) or the diver range which has a lot of history behind it (google skx007 and seiko monster).

If I had to choose

Diver- Steinhart, seiko
Aviator - stowa, steinhart
Dress watch - SARB065

If you're going to spend your money, spend it on a watch from a reliable company like the ones listed above.

a grail is something you want for 10 years and can't afford unless you save that long. of course this varies depending on your means but a $100 russian dive watch doesn't fit that description for anyone in the developed world.

your grail should be something like the Blancpain Fifty-Fathoms or something

No hand markers is a retarded design that should only over be on the purest and most pretentious of dress watches. He might sound like a bitch but he's got somewhat of a point.
There are some watches that just look good on every occasion. There are others that are suited to certain environments.
For example there was a picture earlier on of a Vostok zissou on a red strap at a beach and it looked stunning. Put the same watch and strap in an office setting and it looks as silly as a dress watch on the beach.
Personally I think the watch in the picture looks a bit meh. Show it strapped to the wrist of a diver and it would look much better.

Of course there are better ways to make the point he did, and Vostok make excellent budget divers if Seiko are not an option due to price point.

Better to spend 1 year with no watch and 9 years with a nice watch than to buy a new watch every other year for the next 10 years.
But if the Orient sings to you, then buy it because it is still a very nice timepiece.

>what are you doing that requires reliability at expense of literately everything else

Some of us go outside and have outdoor activities. Diving is no exception. When diving there are three things we need to know: depth, air pressure and bottom time.

Now, all three may be gauged on a diving computer. Now, what if the computer fails? God forbid that ever happens, but we always keep one handy just in case. The bezel is used to keep track of elapsed time.

As far as reliability is concerned, we don't need -5/+5 accuracy. We just need a watch with a movement that won't crap out. The Vostok provides that without problem.

>what is the obsession of divers here? absolutely fucking disgusting watches, generally speaking
Thank you for your opinion. Post some watches.

The white face seems less so. I'm not a fan of white dials, but that's just me.

I'd go for the black dial, stainless steel combo. I'd also look for a nice brown strap for it.

Personally I like the black face dial the best, but whether you go for that should depend on what clothes you wear. Just consider that with the white face you can switch to both brown and black straps without too much issue, but I don't think it would look as good on the black dial.

As the other anon said, if you wear a suit or even a blazer on a regular basis then go for the black dial.

If you browse any watch forum you'll see quite a few "enthusiasts" who will buy a watch, wear it till the initial novelty wears off, sell it and buy another one.

A good example is the Rolex Sub dilemma. Guy sees a Rolex sub and likes the look of it. So he buys a cheap dive watch that mimics the look and wears it for a while. But it doesn't quite hit the spot so he sells it for another dive watch. And another, and another. If this carries on for years he spends more money on these homages/replicas than he would have done just getting a sub.

Took a month or so to get to me in the UK after I ordered it, mostly because they hadn't received a new batch of ETA's at the time of ordering and there was a backlog of orders. It got here safely though so thats good. Steinhart has changed their HQ location last I checked, so you may get it sooner rather than later.
Its a great watch, I was comparing it to my 114060 No-Date Sub the other day, and although there are huge differences in the quality of finish, the steinhart holds its own very well. It looks rugged and durable, what you'd expect from a military styled diver. Not to say it doesn't look refined too. If you look at the watch through some soft yellow overhead lighting, the domed sapphire looks icy cool and the inky black dial contrasts well with the aged lume. Its a stunner, thats for sure.

you dont need batteries. (But to be fair, there are also quartz watches that work with solar or movement)
and i would assume they are more environmentally friendly, since they contain only mechanical parts that are made of unproblematic metals (and some rubies), whereas a quartz watch has a possibly problematic PCB and a definitely problematic battery.

In functional terms, as opposed to aesthetic ones, not much. A good in house movement can go 15+ years without servicing but as said before, solar movements can achieve this now as well.
If we want to give retarded examples then we can go through the usual muh EMP scenarios.
Mechanicals are more rewarding in terms of ownership, and as dumb as it sounds you often enjoy wearing it more because of its complexity. Thats about it though.

>> No.8220766

>>8220740
>ignore this guy
But why?
Do you actually have any source that discredits my assumption?
It might be a small advantage, but considering the whole sustainability trend, it can - and should - still be considered an advantage. Especially if one assumes that a mechanical watch is probably more expensive, resulting in a higher reluctance of its owner to just discard it.
But then on the other hand, if we are talking the lifetimes of the "devices", we also have to take servicing into account. If you drive a long way to a special watchmaker, that will likely at least offset the CO2 emitted by the production and shipping of a single terrorist watch. You could save this, by walking there, shipping it with DHL or UPS (assuming its a large company, that gets a delivery every day anyways) or doing it together with your weekly shopping trip. However the ammount of cadmium and mercury that the new quartz brings into the system will be higher still.

Because you are the one making baseless assumptions here
Do you have any actual evidence that mechanicals have a smaller carbon footprint than quartz? You know, other than the assumptions and conjecture in your post? How many F91w's could be mass produced in the time it takes to make a single high-end swiss watch from scratch? Do we account for the numerous people involved in the mechanical watches production and fine tuning, and their individual carbon footprint? Exactly, you don't really know so you can stop pulling stuff out of your ass.
Also I like how you assume that the blame here lies with the other person being too dumb to understand the concept carbon footprints, as opposed to your own stupid train of thought.

At first I purely mentioned the substances contained in the watch, where a battery powered watch simply has more harmful contents than a mechanical one.
When trying to think about it a bit more in my second post, I realized that i can not only think about stuff like mercury and cadmium, but i also have to take into account the watches CO2 footprint, and that is where it gets really complicated, hence my
>>fucking CO2 and whatever footprints, why you so complicated?
greentext, which was mostly directed at myself and should indicate that the whole thing gets really complicated, if one takes this stuff into consideration, and that my train of thought above that statement is not 100% correct or even calculated in any way. I wasnt blaming anybody in particular, except maybe the globalized world in general, where a tomato flown in from a faraway land might have a better CO2 balance than a homegrown one from a greenhouse that's heated with fossil fuels.

In any case, nobody really gives a shit about the environment, much less how wearing a watch would harm it.

Considering getting this unique vintage IWC for ~600 € (at a local pawn shop --- not some dodgy ukraine ebay shit). What you think?

Here's a full picture of the dial. There's some mold on there, but I guess but thats expected on a 50's watch.

how much are you paying for it, and how much would you be spending on servicing it?

It was serviced and the dial has been restored just recently.

I have no idea what I can expect from an old watch like that though, in terms of service frequency and cost.

I once heard a pretty good analogy for it. Buying a vintage watch can be like buying a vintage car. You'll have a nice piece of history but you have to treat it with respect and keep it well maintained.

The analogy applies to some watches more than others I think. I would buy a vintage watch for a collection or as a dress watch, but not as an every day beater.
