My mother is a hairdresser who's ruined every haircut I've ever had by cutting it too much when I went to her to trim it and keep it in line. Within six weeks of getting a HY, she'd cut it out entirely because she thought it looked silly and that I'd look better with a haircut like Olly Murs.

This is where everyone fucks up, they can't incorporate their taste into different occasions.

Would you go to a wedding draped in Rick? Just tone it down and make the pieces work in that environment.
Black-button down if you must, nice designer dress shoes, not geobaskets.

My mom's in clothing business, so she has a decent taste. I almost always ask her opinion on my fits. Also she does the same thing.

My younger brother is like full casual. Regular fit jeans, some C&A-core hoodie, graphic and label shirts, and awful adidas shoes. He sometimes compliments my hair.

My dad. Welp, he dresses casual, he always wears shirts, not tees. He uses awful color combinations. He compliments me on my dressing, but never tells anything specific, just "anon, that outfit looks good".

Why do people think it's fine to criticize and make fun of someone for dressing well, but then turn around and call that same person pretentious or elitist when they criticize others for dressing poorly?

This makes no sense, is it just the human instinct to fit in? Is it some level of jealousy?

It seems like making fun of someone for spending money on clothes is completely socially acceptable, even (especially) in groups that are "all inclusive no hate just be yourself" like "modern" geek culture

I don't dress like some fucking internet influenced avante garde faggot, that's all.

today:
icebreaker T
gap hoodie
PBJs
margiela repros
G-shock

I guess you could say I'm the guy spending $800 on an outfit that looks not very much different from some walmart shit, while actually wearing walmart tier shit too in one fit (gap actually, but not a huge dif from walmart really)
And the best part is, I'm not ostracizing have the population by wearing stupid shit, overly tight pants, back garb, overpriced brand cotton tees.

My advice to young fashioners is, don't spend so much on something that the resource based quality (fabric and build material, not label) can't justify.
And, try to wear something cheap as fuck with your outfit for a while, every day. If you can't pull it off or feel insecure, there's a good likelihood that you're actually shit at dressing yourself, and that you rely on your recognition of brands and purchase prices to justify how good you look when in fact, you're actually shit at dressing yourself.

Same guys complimented my wool coat later that day and when I told them I got it from milsurp for about 20€, but took it to a tailor to make it look a little less milsurp (removed epautlets and metal hooks for equipment belt, cost like 10€) they told me I spend far too much time and effort on clothes.

After that I tried to explain in detail that why should I settle for less if I know what I like, it is achievable and will probably be cheaper in the long run. They understood it but still were saying that 300€ for shoes is overkill.

>my social life is at an all time low since starting college
sometimes I wonder why I buy clothes too
but then I dont want to BE a weirdo without friends and social life AND to DRESS like a weirdo without friends and social life
so I guess I'm faking it till I make it :^)

I know that feel, not a native speaker as well. Your writing manner is very courteous, say, how you described your interaction with friends and what you said/did. Don't know, just feel it.

Well they still are my friends even if we don't share the opinion on clothes and price/quality. So talking about them in a disregarding manner would seem a bit off wouldn't it?

Regarding that I don't reveal info about my clothes anymore even upon inquiry. I have taken the general /fa/ stance with answers like "I got it online", "I don't remember. I got it from sale" etc. Most people just are ignorant of aesthetics and quality.

I have been dressing in an awful manner until some years ago. My first compliments were from those damn Redwings, also propably the first thing I got judged spending money on. I mean, it is ok to buy high end TV, expensive furniture or a car that has way too much features and luxurious looks when one uses it to drive 5km to work. But when someone "invests" on footwear that can last more than 2 years, and look great to boot, it is money wasted?

Ofcourse not. You can buy a fucking 600$ piece of wood because you like the color or smell or anything, you don't have to be able to afford it, or justify it to your friends. Your fucking pleasure is justification. And we're talking boots here. Also people dont realize your boots will last you 5-10 years if taken care of, while they will buy new cheap stuff every year or so, spending same or greater amount of money.

I am merely perplexed about the drastic chance in the opinion when clothing is discussed. Things mentioned earlier like cars, electronics, furniture and such just seem to get an easier free pass from being frowned upon. The idea of peasants wearing burlap but driving horse carts with silver rims just sounds funny. Even more so if you consider the mental image.
