This discontinued Orient diver is superior to most of their current offerings.

The last time I ever saw one of these, they were going for $125. A steal at that price.

It's a Vostok "Neptune" diver. They are hard to find nowadays, and when you do find one, you are asked to pay an arm and a leg.

The lume application is heavy, and they really glow once they are exposed to light.

Here is a diver that I'm strongly considering. It also has the toothy aesthetic that I like. The quality and finish of these watches is impressive from what I've heard. I think the bezel is interesting as well.

I'm trying to decide between the emerald dial or the plain black one.

This is the smartest watch catalog sorter I've seen, it's been pretty helpful while I look for a new watch, thought someone else might appreciate it too.

http://www.mastersintime.com/us/en/watch-finder/

Also, it changes the options you can select, based on what you've already chosen, so you can never encounter 'no results'. (example, not all brands will be available to choose from, if you select digital watches)

It's a dutch company that I think ships worldwide.

I have $300 to spend on a watch for my birthday.

Under 6"!? Dag yo, that shit's small.

I'd look at a Citizen NY0040 or NY2300. These watches are a little under 40mm diameter. Replace the rubber band with a NATO. If you don't want the nylon, invest in a Watchadoo bracelet.

If you know the band size (widest part of the band, where it fastens to the actual watch), you can just google "replacement watch bracelet." You can spend anywhere from $20-1000+ depending on what you want. IMO leather bands are far more wearable than metal bracelets.

Well I am biased towards JLC and especially towards the Reverso because its a beautiful watch with providence. It's history is superb and aesthetically the watch just clicks to myself and many others. Its probably something to do with the proportions and the golden ratio.
Breguet is a company with a rich history, but I'm not quite sure about the history of the watch in question. I admit I'm fairly ignorant on the Breguet product line, and Breguet as a company as well.

If you go with the Reverso you have plenty of options. You could go with some nice complications, go for the Ultra-Thin Reverso or my favourite, the Classique in stainless steel.

Or, and heres a real spanner in the works, the Master Ultra-Thin which is finished in the same workshops as JLC's higher end stuff. If you have about £12,000 to spare then perhaps the Master Ultra-Thin Jubilee which is made out of platinum and a real crown in any collection. However I think the Master Ultra-Thin in stainless steel and no complications is as refined as you can get within the price bracket you're considering.

>> No.8186468

>>8186322
Yeah the classique probably the one I've been looking at the most, but recently I've also gotten into the fifty fathoms not only because it is a beautiful watch and great in house movement but also because I don't have a diver.

The master ultra thin is also amazing, but I feel that I have a couple of dress watches and need to at least for now try something a little different

>> No.8186505

>>8186468
The Fifty Fathoms is a beauty and a grail for many dive watch enthusiasts. If you're tired of dress watches then perhaps its the best way to go? Even though the Reverso was originally a sports watch its very dressy these adys and thats why I have a Rolex 114060 ceramic no date Sub as my daily wearer. If you're looking for a similar daily wearer then the FF is the way forward I think. The only more desirable diver beyond the Fifty Fathoms is the Patek Nautilus, and that is high praise indeed.

Is there any chance you could try on all three watches and see which one sings to you? I don't know where you are based but if its a big city then you should have no problem trying on the Reverso and FF at least.

I wouldn't say I'm tired of dress watches, I still love them and think they are beautiful, I only feel as if I need some variation to my collection.
What color dial do you have? I live in a pretty big city so have no trouble trying them all out, though even if the nautilus was in my price range we have a 5 year wait list.
Think I will try them on this week and see how it goes

>> No.8186592

>>8186557
My sub has a black dial and the ceramic bezel, which is standard. If you're looking for a nice durable diver and don't mind the date and the magnifier then consider 16610 LV. The Hulk has the benefits of the new Glidelock bracelet (very comfortable) and retains the old aluminium bezels which can be switched out with much more ease than the ceramic ones, allowing for more customisability. Plus you get the nice green dial which sets you apart from the rest of the millions of subs you see in any big city. However by the looks of your current collection, you could very easily have bought a Rolex and chose not to, so I'm guessing its not really your cup of tea. It's the same reason why I didn't recommend the Royal Oak despite being on the topic of dive/sports watches. I can see the appeal of it but it doesn't seem as refined as the FF whic to me seems the better choice.

Good luck and hopefully there will be a thread up where you can post your decision.

Actually I think its a great beater, and vostoks in particular look very nice with a bit of wear on them. The only issue is that if you are getting it shipped and the shipping costs are significant for what should be a budget watch, then I would save that money and put it into a Seiko Monster or something.
However if you're in it for the aesthetics then go for it, it look positively delicious on a nato strap.

Its a good entry level automatic, but nothing special. I think Tissot use ETA movements so you can't really go wrong with that.

I know in your litlle autistic heart, you will wait for that one post.

That one post that validates, in some way, your shit watch.

Maybe some anonymous poster will stop and notice,
"hey, that doesn't look too bad, despite being bought at a mall kiosk for 15$ and meant for children, in some ironic, nxtlvl sort of way. maybe i should ask where 2 cop"

But you know that won't happen.

Instead, you type some description to dispel the possibility that you meant exactly what you said. You write "cheepo" and "master-race" because obviously you can't be serious, can you?

No, not unless someone agrees with you, where you'll get to feel the satisfaction of picking up and start a trend faggots on an anime imageboard will think is fashionable.

Hopefully they'll ignore your post instead?

After all, you were joking, weren't you?

You only bought the watch to troll /fa/, right?

It'll blend in with all the other troll posts, probably, and you can forget about it.

Your watch is absolute shit.
There is nothing redeemable about it in ANY way.
There is no ironic aesthetic in it that may redeem it's lack of quality.
There is no possible way anyone will ever think that garbage looks good save for the mentally handicapped, and the other hot topic lurking children you hang out with.

You have no idea what you're doing, don't post until you have the slightest modicum of a clue of what a good watch looks like, because what you have there is an abomination.

Rolex doesn't equate to "any watch" though, my misinformed friend. Rolex is a company that started out making tool watches and through some exceptionally clever marketing have made themselves the most recognisable swiss watch brand in the world. With other brands you pay a high price for the quality of materials and workmanship. With Rolex you pay for the history and "name" of the watch. The design of the sub still had the folded link end link up until a few years ago for example, until Rolex decided to give it a much needed update.

The point is, Rolex is nothing exceptional when it comes to fine watchmaking, so using it as a comparison is idiotic and implies the person making these claims has little idea of what he's talking about and bashes a company that is low hanging horological fruit.

Yeah, when we start comparing mechanical to quartz, it's also about spending more and getting less.

There are quartz watches that are powered by the sun and reset themselves every day according to the nearest atomic clock or even a goddamn satellite. The digital ones have as many functions as somebody felt like programming into them.

Then on the other end you have dumbasses bragging about spending the price of a new car on a watch that only has two hands and doesn't even wind itself.

Please kids, if you aren't into watches, don't get into watches. WISdom is a race to the bottom.

>> No.8192617

Yeah because perpetual calendars, chronographs, moon phases and spring drives don't exist. Whatever you want to believe. If you don't appreciate mechanical engineering that's fine, I could see why someone who doesn't thinks all this mechanical stuff is dumb as hell. If you just want to buy more electronics, feel free. That's fine too.

>> No.8192868

>>8192617

Every complication can be performed by a $5 microchip. Spring drive is just another way to make hands go around a dial, and a lot of people consider it quartz.

I appreciate mechanical engineering just fine. Took my thermodynamics final this morning. Engineering is for solving problems, not engaging in intentional retro-kitsch wankery to peel disposable income off the Veblen set.

That's not how it works, the hands are still powered by the mainspring. Maybe you're thinking of kinetic.

You keep talking about mechanicals like they all cost thousands, which isn't true. If all you're saying is "don't spend car money on a watch" then I don't even disagree with you. So it's just because quartz can do the same thing for less money? That's it?

You're right. I misstated that, but not in the way you think.

Okay, let's try this:

There are two important springs in a mechanical watch:

The mainspring provides motive force to make the hands go around.

The hairspring or balance spring powers the oscillation of the escapement, which provides timekeeping.

In a quartz watch the quartz oscillator replaces the hairspring. It doesn't power the hands. They're powered by electric stepper motors. We call the watch quartz because of its timekeeping component. We don't call it an electric stepper watch because of its motive component.

Regardless of the fact that it still has a mainspring, a Spring Drive's timekeeping component is quartz.

Calling it quartz is entirely consistent with established use of the term.

>Don't spend car money on a watch.
What I'm saying is don't fall for marketing.

>No fun, not ever.
I just don't see the "fun" in solving the problem of timekeeping poorly, frankly, when it was solved a long time ago better. In the same vein, I don't see the point of the mechanical engineers reinventing a four-wheeled bicycle every goddamn semester for a senior project at my school, but at least that's a student project and they're not going out and trying to sell it to people for $100,000 in place of a daily driver.
