I understand that everyone has their own tastes, but I don't understand this infatuation with Rick Owen. Sure, I've seen a few of his designs that I like, but for the most part, his products seem too flamboyant. Let's look at the Geobaskets for example. They look like moon boots. They also always look dirty and dingy. That stupidly long shoelace that most people tie around their calf is annoying as well. They sort of look like super hightop retro Nikes. Is there something that I'm missing? I'm all into looking well dressed, but I think I'm missing the "fashion" part. Believe me when I say this, but I'm not trying to be inflammatory in any way, despite how this post might seem. I just don't see the appeal.

>everyone has their own tastes
Lol, well there's your answer but let's carry on.

>his products seem too flamboyant
I think certain people enjoy that OP. In fact I know people do.

>lets look at the geobaskets
They're not geobaskets but alright.

>look like moon boots
Look LIKE, or are? People like you annoy me, due to the fact you see something slightly beyond your average item, and then boom you relate it to something completely irrelevant.
They're not moon boots.

>that stupidly long shoelace
You're describing something whilst insulting it at the same time. What's the point?

>is there something that I'm missing?
Probably yeah, or you just dislike them.

>I just don't see the appeal
Then you don't see it. Rick isn't for everyone.

Dunks are an argot for a specific era of geobaskets, moron.

Either way, as just mentioned, Rick has pretty specific appeal in being very focused on alternative design and luxe materials - combined with the presence and association with the brand (the actual ethos behind the design.)

Everyone keeps saying
>Everyone has different taste.
I understand that, I just want to see what the appeal is.
For example. I like Fred Perry suede sneakers. Why? Because they're comfortable, light, match with all of my pants and they're pretty cheap. They're also understated, which I like. I like dressing well without shouting out about it. That's their appeal to me.

Now please, your turn.

Rick Owens appeals to "avant-garde" "holier-than-thou" psuedo-intellectuals in their 20's. Ironically, the people who so love him and his "anti logo'd" clothes are telling themselves that they're not a billboard, when really Rick Owens pieces are almost more identifiable than say Gucci. It's that whole, "I don't want it to look like I want attention, but I secretly really want attention.." thing.

>> No.8106507

When I first ordered my geos, I was a bit skeptical. I wasn't sure if they would look that good in person, or if I was convinced they look good due to all the hype and proffesssional photography.
I had them shipped to a buddy's house since I couldnt pick up the package at my place. When I went to get the package, he was having a get together with about 15 people. When I opened the box and took the sneakers out, I have to say, I was very impressed with it. Not to sound weird, but they even smelled good. I worked stock for a shoe store that had some pretty high end stuff (KVA, McQueen, etc.) and the geos are all quality.
The reception was pretty good. I have had people call say "oooohh look at those pumps/ high tops." I have had people call them moon boots and compare them to Marty McFlys' sneakers.
I dont even wear them with all black and white. Just with my usual jeans and hoody. I have recieved looks from a few people as I walked by. I haven't recieved any negative attention, including phony compliments.

>That stupidly long shoelace that most people tie around their calf is annoying as well

I agree with this. If you tie it around the shoe, it makes it pretty tedious to untie and unzip out of them.I just tie the laces around the massive tongue.

Well, they apply to a person who's looking to create a specific silhouette. When it comes to adding weight to the foot area, the geobasket is really a great sneaker. They are a really noticeable statement piece too, and can really add a bit of flare to a fit that works within the boundaries of the style so as to not be too flamboyant.

This fit in particular is a good example, the chunkiness of the shoe mirrors the chunkiness of the upper half. It's really easy to mess up an oversized/exaggerated silhouette by having shoes that are too slim or small, creating a bad tapering effect on the lower half.

thats my 2c at least.

Geos were created by Rick because he wanted a very over-the-top, highly exaggerate version of a basketball sneaker. The aesthetic appeal of the generic basketball sneaker was that they were relatively large, clunky, and overprotective of the foot. Rick purposefully went overboard with this idea and created a "sneaker" (or more so a boot) that encapsulated this aesthetic to a greater degree: an overbearing silhouette meant to intimidate the eye.

People find appeal in this, but they also have their own reasons for liking them. It may be because they simply like large shoes, or they love a dirty, well-aged leather sneaker/boot, or they support the designer, etc. I myself dislike them because I can't pull off mid/high top shoes, but I can understand why people like them.

coming from someone who has owned multiple pairs of Rick footwear, currently owns two pairs of geos and will certainly cop more in the future-

they're just a sick design when it comes down to it. a vans sk8 hi (a classic in it's own right) on steroids and that doesn't even come close to describing the shoe. nobody else is putting stuff out like this. minimalist, yet iconic enough that you know exactly what it is. I also particularly enjoy the comfort and quality they offer, but design first and foremost. that's what I'm paying for.

doesn't bother me at all that these threads constantly exist because I'm sure most of the posters that trash the geo couldn't afford it in their wildest dreams anyway. if you had the money (and I mean, had money to burn, not just your paycheck for the month) it wouldn't be as big of a deal cashin out for a pair or two of these as some of you guys make it out to be.

I never mentioned anything about the price. I have no problem shelling out cash for a good item, so long as I deem it to be worth it. I don't see what's iconic or minimalist about these shoes. An iconic and minimalist item to me would be a pair of Ray-Ban aviators. Sure there are other aviator sunglasses out there, but you can tell a pair are Ray-Bans with the slightest glance. Not because they're flashy, but because they're truly iconic. If anyone sees a pair of Ray-Bans on someone's face, they won't think "ugh, what are those?", which I imagine is what goes through peoples' minds when when see Geobaskets. Particularly people who don't know about Rick Owens, and trust me, they're the majority.

I sort of feel this way. I've seen $1200+ pairs of monk strap dress shoes that I would absolutely pay for if I could get my hands on them. That's part of the appeal to me; getting my hands on them. If a pair of shoes cost $1200, and you want to stand out in a good way, everyone and their mom shouldn't be wearing them. It's like the Rolex craze. They are nice watches, that is completely undeniable. But if you're going to spend that much on a watch, I'd imagine you'd want a little exclusivity.

sure, but ray bans are mainstream. people outside of the internet know about them. they're not hard to obtain, you just need to pay the $ for them. it's like a pair of converse, or on a higher level, louis vuitton. everyone recognizes that pattern. it's nothing interesting, or exciting, just brands/ designs you've been conditioned to notice. you could argue that LV isn't fashionable, it's just a gaudy lazy print that anyone can look at and know you paid $$$ for, and since there's so much of it on pretty much everyone who has money, chances are, a lot of people wearing LV don't look good in it. that's not to say that there isn't a place for it, but it's not for everyone.

now, people in real life don't know about geobaskets because RO is a designer brand hyped through the internet and the only exposure you get of them is through this forced glorified perspective of tumblr outfits... but to a collective group of individuals on the internet, rick to us is legitimately how you see those raybans. there's cheaper hightops like supra, and shoes just as expensive like givenchy but there's nothing quite like rick's design, and if you admire it, you'll pay for it. you might think the design isn't fashionable and they just look like chunky shoes, and I can see that side of it easily. they honestly do on lots of people. their popularity is funny to me because a lot of people look dumb in their hype-y all money no style outfits, but they wear them proudly like some sort of rendition of LV print; they don't care what they look like with geos on, all that matters is that they're wearing them for e-props...

>> No.8110036

BUT there are a few people that make them look fantastic. they have the potential to look so futuristic and just out there and break necks. take away all the connotations you have about these from the internet about them being ridiculously expensive or "meme shoes" whatever these kids are calling them this week and you just have a unique design that either is or is not for you, but rick must be doing something right considering his success with this now staple design in his clothing company. they just fit in with a certain aesthetic so perfectly, in my opinion.

I'm an early 20-something with two pairs of these things and I wear them around other fashion-conscious 18-30 year olds both at my job and out and about in the city, and I get non-stop compliments on them. every day. I've only ever gotten one person who knew what they actually WERE (but he's a sufu user so I don't even think that counts) but I get genuine "wow, what kind of shoes are those?" all the time. there's just nothing like them, and if you can pull them off, they're truly something else. internet hype or no hype. only ever seen one other person in real life wearing rick, and that was in SF uniqlo. people act like EVERYONE has a pair of these. they're $1200 sneakers. no.
