I've been thinking about looking into school for fashion design sometime in the future.
Does anybody have any tips on how to prepare for it?
I have basic sewing skills, but I will need to get my own sewing machine and re-learn how to use it.
I am not great at drawing. Is there a computer program that could help me draft designs? I know a program called Marvelous Designer but to get updates for it you have to pay monthly.

Pic unrelated.

spend an hour a day drawing, you'll get better in no time.

its not an optional skill for any kind of design.

Buying software for something you plan to study is as important as, if not more important than, buying textbooks. Don't pussy out of this if it's your dream.

>> No.8087239

Well all the Autodesk software is free for students but I don't know if that really applies to fashion design.

Talk to your school's guidance counselor and get in touch with the admissions offices at schools that interest you to start developing a plan. That might include taking more classes, purchasing specific materials, preparing a portfolio, and more.

/fa/scist, would you advise somebody to pursue an economics and international studies degree with the intent of breaking into the industry?

>> No.8087283

>>8087256

I would advise that you should get the fullest education that you can in whatever interests and motivates you. You can find a way to build your industry-related skill set outside of school, so I think having other traits and talents that will set you apart are important. The worst, least interesting people I ever meet in fashion are usually the ones who only went to fashion school and never took the time to develop other hobbies, interests, or habits. I would say I have limited experience with interviewing/sorting through large swaths of job applicants, but I find that it's usually the upper-middle class girls that these schools churn out that are always the least driven and worst hires.

That said, if studying fashion and design really does it for you, then don't suppress that drive and just go for it. If it doesn't work, just at least recognize it and switch to something else. I think being able to really focus and absorb things about concept and design and material and whatever can be a satisfying experience. The goal is to take however fun and interesting your studies are and turn it into a viable set of skills you can apply to work.

well, its rather easy once you have the patterns, you cop your big ass fabric sheet, be careful when choosing the fabric because you cant make a shirt out of regular denim and so on, then you put the patterns on the fabric and mark them with chalk, remember to let some space for sewing and fixing, just follow the instructions on the manual of the pattern or join all the pieces together and sew them and there you go

its a pain in the ass to get those pesky patterns, it seems that only profesional tailors can get them, you can always copy the pattern from an old shirt or trousers and then use them as patterns, and if they´re yours you dont have to tapper them

You dont necessarily have to be good at drawing to do fashion design. You will learn everything you need to learn in school (including sewing). You will learn how to do fashion illustration, and while you do them you will become at least decent at doing the kind of drawing you would need to do. Its a little different from typical drawing. All you REALLY need, though, is to be able to do flats. Which dont take real drawing skill, only time and patience.

You dont necessarily have to prepare anything beyond obvious artistic/design ability in the form of a portfolio; though I would recommend learning adobe illustrator and photoshop in advance.

Source: studying at Parsons. I'm illustration but I've taken a couple fashion illustration courses- heres my blog: http://imcura.tumblr.com/

if i study industrial design can i move into fashion design? i cant really see myself as a designer but i want to try it but meanwhile i want something as a backup

>> No.8091882

>>8091800
designers are designers for a reason, if you dont see yourself as a designer im puzzled as to why you'd want to try another field of design. Otherwise I'd say go for it.

I'm not currently in school, and the school I went to isn't the school I plan on attending. I know the school I want to attend requires a portfolio and they're very picky about who they let in.

Thanks, it's helpful to hear this coming from someone at Parsons. I basically have decided that it's Ryerson or nothing, because Ryerson is known for its fashion design program in Toronto.
I actually have tons of photoshop experience and learned some illustrator stuff in school so that's good to hear.

if you're the guy who just followed my tumblr I think I saw a post of yours on ic once which genuinely impressed me, pic related. If I could give you any advice/critique I'd encourage you to find a happy medium between figure and architectural drawing. Juxtapose the two. Fashion and architecture can be very similar, particularly in the subject of silhouettes. However, you seem to be biased towards curves in your figure drawings and designs, and I'm not sure if its because you think 'thats the way it should be.' When you start breaking rules and really doing what you want to do, you start making interesting and new stuff.

>>8091977
Good luck on your application, what really matters in art are the connections you make. Especially in school.
