His music is really mediocre too with some OK production and embarassing music videos.

he didn't promote his music or go on a tirade for attention. because there was so little information on him (none until mid 2012) people couldn't get distracted by his background, his history, his race, etc.

Ugly Mane is a fictional persona that ended up becoming realer than most rappers out, simply by not trying to say he was real. Once LUM started posting on FB was also when he started writing raps truer to his personal views and beliefs, though his raps have always had a nihilistic and misanthropic theme.

He wanted his music to speak for himself and didn't want to deal with the social media aspect so when he saw people making, and most importantly, following fake twitter accounts and stuff he just didn't want to get involved.

Ugly Mane had history with very underground scenes like black metal and power electronics and seemed to be into it before the internet played such a big role in distribution.
Initially the only way he would update his fans was via a mailing list. He was used to making music for a small amount of people, in a small genre, and I think the success he had online alienated him a bit. After all, his album is called "Thug Isolation" which not only enforces his nihilistic beliefs but his belief in keeping a low profile and not seeking validation.

If you dig into his lesser known albums you will hear a lot more "personal" verses. Most rappers end up getting faker as time goes on, but once people started paying attention he started being more innovative, and more honest and even inspirational in his lyrics, yet kept his core message.
