Be quiet. "Cyberpunk" was a tiny little tendency in sci-fi decades ago that got yoked to a major but, famously, dead movement in the broader culture.

It's not really what people are talking about when they say they want cyberpunk today. They mean they want to play in similar ideological and emotional terrain.

Which, more thoughts on later. Came here to bump, wound up raging at definitionists.

You won't even notice computers, they'll be low-powered chips sewn right into your clothes or planted under your skin, with an accompanying corneal implant or special glasses for display, or some bullshit like that. And cloud. The cloud will be as pervasive as air. Everything and anything will rely on cloud computing if it needs to execute anything even moderately intensive, nearly all storage will be in the cloud, including operating system and other essential system files. Anything larger than a mobile phone will be nigh unheard of for your average consumer.

THIS IS THE BEST IDEA FOR A THREAD I HAVE SEEN IN A WHILE
so stoked for our corporate-owned stateless dystopia, friends
as many have pointed out, cyberpunk isn't easily broken down into basic pieces, it's more of an attitude.
here's the two kind of guiding principles for cyberpunk as i understand it:
>Digital networks and surrounding technologies are being integrated into life around the globe, these technologies should be manipulated and liberated from corporate control
>Over-saturation of our brains from media has numbed people towards corruption, we should seek to overcome this saturation and operate outside of its confines
These seem like two principles really distant from fashion, but I think if they are understood as ideas about the future, not as laws, they can influence all parts of life, including style.
Certainly fashion has undergone massive change with the advent of social media and communication networks. These cyberpunk principles call us to understand the influence that mass communication technology has on our own style and embrace the means of influence. At one time, these means of network influence were thought to be large physical networks and PA systems. If contemporary media networks are any indication, the future of influence will be on social media.
The cyberpunk persona as seen in the 80s was a street-dwelling punk who "jacked in" to the network and existed alternatively in the net/matrix/cyberspace...

... Nowadays, the idea of "jacking in" seems ridiculous, the internet is more of a constant augmentation of our reality. We don't need to find a terminal, we have constant connection in our pockets. We aren't living with split personalities, one online and one offline...rather we are living with transient personalities, we phase back and forth between meat and cyber spaces.
Therefore, I think the cyberpunker image needs to shift a little from the 80s image. There isn't some need for "jacker" culture, one who can shift in and out of digital systems, because that's all of us. No one is 100% plugged in, and almost no one is 100% plugged out. Cyberpunkers now need to be able to "unplug" from communities and social circles, which means less physical gear a la >>7670429
and more of a media transient being with no brand slavery or style thirst. Fringe/alternative/outcast styles appeal to the cyberpunk because generally that's where they operate. They also tend to not settle down, so techwear or nomadic wear also appeal to them. I kind of see 2014 cyberpunk as a foil to strict lunarcore style. Not Ripley, the uniformed utilitarian space deputy, but the digital media drifter, side-stepping their way through subcultures and networks towards the future.

... Honestly, beyond the attitude, I don't really know what cyberpunk looks like in the same way I can say "that's gothninja" or "that's preppy", but I think a growing number of people feel a draw towards that attitude first crafted in 80s scifi novels. I definitely wouldn't call my own wardrobe definitively cyberpunk, but it's in my bank of influences.

The closest thing to a style movement I've seen that follows the cyberpunk attitude is probably post-net style (RIP). It takes images and brands found in mass media and manipulates them, essentially operating outside of the confines of corporate branded net experiences. Though the mini renaissance of geocities isn't a long-lasting style, the attitude of meta-appropriation is pretty dang cyberpunk.

I'm probably not even describing cyberpunk here, I need a new name for it. But whatever, let's keep talking and craft visions of the future for a better today.
Stay choice.

I really like the overall description you give towards the aesthetics of the modern variant of cyberpunk we see today. I definitely agree that there's no reason to have to "jack in" anymore, and also agree that it's an aged concept that has no place in today's version of cyberpunk. In fact, I think any conception of cyberpunk will, given a decade or so, no longer be relevant stylistically because of the ever-evolving scene involved in technological progress and societal change.

In terms of what dictates the "style" of cyberpunk, I agree that it has, in some ways, stayed consistent with the model we saw emerge in the 80's. However, I do see a few trends possibly influencing the modern form of cyberpunk that we have today which is emerging as a big, big part of this new tech wave that is happening. While it might sound a little funny, the neo-renaissance concept games like Deus Ex: HR and smaller titles like Remember Me and Singularity seems to be a big, reoccurring thing. The desire to "un-plug" and create an environment that is not only futuristic but "human" through renaissance-inspired design is a key concept in a lot of these examples.

Another style that I see influencing "modern cyberpunk" is the high fashion, minimalist trend that's become the "big thing" in fashion today. It "feels" characteristically futuristic when you see a clean, sharp-lined, monochromatic environment that is saturated in perfection.

The last big one is the dystopian government-controlled network of swirling technology, where the rich and powerful control all avenues of connectivity and the rest are left struggling in a post-modern world to survive. That aesthetic is the kind you see in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and movies like Blade Runner.

I really think that, regardless of whether people want it or not, the developments that are being made today are shaping the eventual adoption of "cyberpunk" culture. It's just not happening at a rate that people like.

Homes are becoming increasingly more intrinsically tied with technology. The lights in my house, for example, I've got rigged up in such a way that I can control them with my phone. It wasn't hard to do, and took just a bit of time following some tutorial online to do. Anyone with a cell phone can communicate instantaneously with anyone else around the world who has access to the internet or a cellular network, and the advancements that we're making in medicine and bio technology is awesome. People are getting their lives back through advanced prothestics and life-saving medicines thanks to all of the progress we've been able to make today.

All this put together and shaken up makes for an interesting future to ponder, though most conceptions of what the future will look like based on the limited information we have today are probably wrong. Hence why cyberpunk culture is an ever evolving thing with only it's core ideals and elements intact. Those elements influence what gets adopted and what doesn't.

I agree and I think it goes beyond just high fashion. The "goofninja/gothninja" look seems to be a modern take on cyberpunk themes, even if its never explicitly mentioned very much. There is that sort of future feel that the minimalism of the the "goofninja" aesthetic brings, and it maintains the "punk" part of cyberpunk.
