It's mostly due to the distance from the camera and its lens.
It's not that you look bad in pictures, actually a professional photographer should make you look even better than the way you look in the mirror. You just look bad in bad pictures like most people out there, in my case it just seems worse because I become self conscious about it.

1. When you look in the mirror, everything is backwards to what other people see. In pictures, the image is reversed from what you see in the mirror - meaning your right side of your face (when you look in the mirror) is the left side of your face visually in pictures or to people looking at you.

This means that if your right eye is ever so slightly higher than your left, and your nose very, very slightly is to the left, and your teeth are very very slightly aligned to the right... all of this will be *opposite* from what people normally see, and what you will see in pictures vs a mirror.

So, every minor misalignment (or major) will stand out HUGE to you when you see a picture. Because you spend your entire life seeing those minor misalignments the other way, and your mind sets that as "you". So when those attributes switch it looks HUGE to you. "Holy SHIT why is my face all crooked!"

To other people, though, your pictures are representative of what *they* are used to. This is why people could love pictures of you but you hate them.

2. Movement, animation, personality... all of that is factored into peoples looks. So there are people who look like a 6/10 in pictures, when you see the way they move and their face shifting perspectives, it works. It makes them an 8/10 or something.

3. In mirrors people tend to position their face/body in ways that are flattering. Very few people, when looking in a mirror, are just standing neutrally or looking for BAD angles. So when you see pictures of yourself where you aren't able to angle yourself in the best possible light or even are positioned in a way that highlights your *worst* angles, that's only going to exacerbate the "oppisite of the mirror" effect. And you can think you look like total shit, even though to others you might look great.
