I used to keep my watches in a box I built, I built it out of Peruvian walnut with inlaid zebrawood. Held together with Pegas.

I sanded it for days, until it was smooth as glass. Then I rubbed all the wood with tung oil so it's all rich and dark.

But I ended up trading it for ounce of weed one day.

because the actual piece is worth around 9k

it's not the saving part, it's the justification of price in comparison to my other blongings. I wouldn't wear it, I'm too young for a 9k watch. Not to mention if I managed to save 9k I'd be a fucking moron to not buy something else with money like a car (don't own one) or a holiday (haven't had one in a while).

Gold Rolexes are 18ct gold, NOT plated steel. Other true luxury watch manufacturers do the same.

http://www.rolex.com/about-rolex/materials.html

" use of this most precious of metals. Only by controlling the whole process can Rolex guarantee a peerless, enchanting lustre on its watchcases and bracelets alike.

Rolex exclusively uses 18 ct gold, a princely alloy composed of 750‰ (thousandths) of pure gold, plus exactly the right mixture of elements including silver, copper, platinum and palladium necessary to produce the different types of 18 ct gold: yellow, Everose and white. Rolex’s jealously-guarded formulas ensure exceptional durability, polishability – and an extraordinary sheen that lasts for generations."

A gold Patek will be gold, not plate or fill. Scratch it all day and it'll be gold all the way down. You'll never hit steel or any other metal til you get to the movement.

Your gold filled Hamilton is a piece of shit.

The Shinola is too big for me, but it's a well-finished watch on nice leather with a sapphire crystal. $600 is a pretty standard price for a watch with that description. if you wear your watch every day you would actually never need to reset the time/date.
Maybe a minor adjustment (minute or two) every month depending on what kind of movement your watch has.

I prefer mechanical over quartz. The second-hand sweep is so much nicer than the jolted tick. Gears, levers, wheels and a spring is so much cooler than a battery and circuit wires

And I fully understand why people like mechanical watches. It's the same reason people like film vs digital cameras or carburetors vs fuel injection.

It literally makes them feel cooler or superior or edgy.

I'm not saying it's stupid. You can definitely put a price on feeling cool. Just don't knock on quartz and act like mechanical is superior, because it really isn't.

Quick question for you guys. Whenever I've bought a watch, I did it in person, and I never bought anything that good from anywhere that fashionable. Now I have the chance to buy a decent watch, but I have to write to the supplier, who's across the country from me, and I'm not entirely sure how to phrase this e-mail. Any suggestions or pointers?

Cant really judge the quality or style, but that looks (and is priced) like an ordinary department store watch.

>> No.7576491

>>7576479
Nothing about it is all that special other than the price. As sad as it is, I just can't be shilling out several hundred or thousand dollars on a watch, so a decent-looking one like this that was less than a hundred simply caught my eye. And it's not like ordering something cross country is new to me, as I've been ordering clothes like that on-and-off for years. The worst that could happen is that I send this guy a letter and never get one back, or get one back and not feel right about it and call the whole thing off.

Chrono 24 is a well trusted watch marketplace. It's like an eBay/Amazon for watches. I've bought a few pieces from this place.

Why are you making this up? As mentioned above Swatch wants ETA secured for their own Group's watches and you're an idiot if you think the FHS or the Swiss government would ever allow them to have a monopoly. It would cripple the entire Swiss watch industry.

Not that many people. Out of the known Swiss houses very few use completely inhouse movements... and they're usually the upper end ones since developing movements is not exactly a cheap endeavour.

That is also the main argument Swatch uses to strangle supply, they argue they spend money on movement development other watch makers just buy them and spend money on marketing... though that makes no sense to me... just charge them more money to buy your movement to compensate the development costs...

But the article actually states the competition commission's decision is that Swatch gradually reduces supply, which will give Sellita and other movement companies to catch up and also other to develop their own inhouse movement should they wish to.

The Swiss watch world is going to become very very interesting in 10 years time... I wonder if any will disappear because of this.
