Personally I discovered this pic as I was going through something very similar.
Not exactly the same, maybe not as extreme, but the similarities hit very close to home.

But it definitely happens. It's even happened to me recently. One thing you have to understand is that ANY sexism in the workplace is illegal. Nobody is going to say "we didn't hire you because you're a woman" but they'll find another reason to cover it up.
In my case it was a job as a waiter. The manager doesn't like male waiters for certain reasons. and btw, all the kitchen and bussers in the restaurant are male. AKA more work getting paid far less.
