how can you analyze designers? whem watching a runway show what should i be thinking about? how can i pick up on subtle details?

These are nice overviews, but not that many of them are critical studies. I'd suggest stuff like Ingrid Loschek's "When Clothes Become Fashion" or even Roland Barthes more technical work on clothing and semiotics like "The Fashion System".

Asking questions, reading books, going to stores, going to shows, talking to designers, talking to sales agents, talking to customers. You have to engage with the subject in many different ways if you want to learn about the subject.
