Think it's a coincidence that they're both the third tracks on each of their respective albums? One of the things I appreciate about Kayne is that as an artist, he doesn't give a shit. He dresses weirdly, acts a fool, writes music that upsets people, sometimes deliberately...I mean, he's the definition of /fa/. The idea isn't to copy other people styles, it's to further develop your own sense of what style means. That's what Kanye does through his music and, from what I can see here, the way he dresses. If people don't like it, fine, but he has my utmost respect as an artist.

ive heard this argument before and normally id give kanye the benefit of the doubt. a) because i think a lot of the hate directed at him and his art is either overtly or indirectly race motivated b) i am a big fan of his because of his broad and abiding interest and taste in the arts c) his track record is nearly spotless: the 'runaway' mega-music video being a serious achievement. but in this case i doubt.

also, he enlisted the help of many people to produce the 'runaway' mega-video. im not certain, but do i recall correctly this was the first, if not among the first videos kanye has drafted and directed? i think its plausible he is stretching his legs as a movie director, as he has tried his hand with fashion.

on a recent podcast with bret easton ellis, he talked about watching 'there will be blood' a lot and being very interested in the atmosphere or 'emotionality' of his (kanye's own) art. i can see kanye wanting to conjure a sense of majesty as a tribute to kim and their relationship, and his palette taking a dramatic turn toward new-agey images to try and evoke this sensibility. i see kanye as a savant, whose output can be uneven instead of calculated. i think this is especially the case with yeezus. but this is something i enjoy about the whole album and this period in his artistic output! its the exact opposite of the towering, crafted nature of MBDTF. here kanye has finally shed his desire to impress or dazzle his audience, and is now flying by the seat of his pants. its all very unrefined, raw. this mode is not without pitfalls, however.
