Base pay when I started was 6.89 but it went up to 7.51 after 3 months work.
Evening pay is time and a 3rd (9.50ish)
Sunday pay is time and a half (nearly 11)
There's also a bonus every year which was roughly 20% last year which equated to around £1000 for me.
As well as the wage they'll pay for things like guitar lessons and give you up to £60 back on festival tickets. It's a fairly sweet deal.

I have two years college as a general theatre tech. Required:none. You can easily pick it up on the job. Just be smart and fine someone whos not an arrogant asshole to learn from.

Hours are variable. Anywhere from 2-18. Depends on what you're called in for. Load ins and load outs are usually around 4hours but with a showcall included that turns into 12 or 18. Again it depends on what you're called for and how big the gig is. Also, alot of places pay you for 4 hours minimum so if you only work 2, you get paid for 4.

Pay starting is usually $18/hr. $16 if the company is cheap as fuck or if they know the work is easy. When you get too be known and start freelancing, you can start letting people know your hourly rate. Again its dependent on the gig. You dont want to undercut yourself but if you ask for say $30/hr and they just want you to push cases, they're gonna go find some kid willing too do it for $16 instead. Even if you are a professional. Sometimes its better too take a low ass wage for easy work so you get paid at all. Also, people will try to not pay you ALL the time. Just keep hounding them and the company they wprk for.

You can also try to get in with the Union (IATSE) its a slow start, but as you get older, its more consistent.

The pay is lower than most other jobs in this thread: I get paid around $50,000.

What's the job like? It is all precision work. You need steady hands. Coffee and other stimulants are strictly verboten when you work. . . and for good reason. Watchmaking is a very silent job--peace and tranquility is the order of the day.

Specifically, I assemble watches for an undisclosed brand and I also do repairs to boot.

Am I happy with my work? Kind of. Ultimately, I would like a corporate position, something managerial.

Okay, sure thing.

Rolex is a very respectable brand. In terms of durability, reliability, and build quality--a Rolex is an excellent mass produced watch. I know that some watch snobs hate Rolex because they have become too popular, but I think this sentiment is stupid. Why hate on a quality piece? If you ever get a Rolex, get something that isn't encrusted with diamonds or gold plated. Just stick with their classic designs. I know that every rich guy and their fraternity son owns a Rolex, but that shouldn't stop you from buying one if you can afford it. Like I said, they are quality.

Omega, is at the same level of value and quality of Rolex. However, some of us feel that Omega has become the victim of shameless James Bond branding. We usually scoff at anything that is marketed as "007 Edition". Omega also uses excellent quartz movements, don't dismiss a quartz movement watch. . . don't be a snob.

As for Cartier. . . I don't like their heavy use of Roman numerals. I have only seen a handful of Cartiers in my line of work. From what I have seen, there is nothing too special about them. I mean, they are fine watches, but I wouldn't pay anything extravagant for one.

Oh, and a quick word about Omega vs. Rolex. The difference in QUALITY is like 99% vs. 100%. In terms of value for the money, an Omega is excellent.

Also, fun fact: Where I work, there are heated debates over which Omega watch is better. . . Speedmaster vs. Seamaster. This debate is futile, just like apples and oranges, but I get involved in it anyways. I went to uni for mechanical engineering. When I graduated, I was a bit disappointed at my prospects. A lot of mech engineers usually end up in a firm troubleshooting production equipment. Others end up designing things like doorknobs. The more interesting engineers end up in the robotics field. Initially, I wanted to go into robotics, but the field seemed to esoteric for me. . .

I once checked the time, just glancing at my watch, and I knew it. I applied to a watch and clock school, which is a 2 year program dedicated to horology and horology mechanics. My uni experience in mechanical engineering was slightly irrelevant, but it was helpful nonetheless.

Once I graduated, I got a job offer from a company I will not disclose.

As for what involves making a watch. . . I could tell you, but that may be too boring for a board on a website that is dedicated to Japanese animation.

In first year studying philosophy, enrolled with the intent of either going into psychiatry or law after undergrad. I don't think college is for me right now though, so I'm not going back next year. Only work experience I have is an assistant programmer at a university (c++, java). I'm applying to a Ruby-based coding "bootcamp" right now which sets you up with a job afterward, so that's what I'd do in place of trying to learn philosophy around smelly american eagle clad communications majors and "professors" inclined to play 'n sync (I shit you not) at the beginning of seminars. Honestly, knowing that my future (ie gpa) right now is decided by whether or not I get the flu again or whether or not I get a panic attack makes me so so uncomfortable

If you can be an interior designer and contractor here in LA you make mad cash. My pops refinishes and paints interiors through an interior designer. He pays him and not the homeowner. She takes a cut from his pay and every other contractor she gets on the job. She also gets payed for her opinion on what looks good and who will do it best. She can make like 6k+ a month purely off hiring others and designing the interiors. She buys minimal supplies like drafting and craft supplies. The homeowner buy all the materials like furniture and what not. You need to really open yourself up and accept that the homeowners will battle with you on what looks good though. You can see how stressed she is when you see her. She drives a Porsche and wears designer daily. She has 1 kid in college.
