Safety Razor General!

Just got a Merkur 38C with some SandaIwood shaving cream and an EscaIi brush. Have faciaI hair simiIar to Joseph Gordon-Levitt (currentIy 23, first saefty razor).

Any tips for a new safety razor owner?

>> No.7112872

>How often do you shave?
used to once a week, slow beard.
I have quit, to see if my beard can grow beyond stringy backwatercore.

Edwin Jagger DE89 with Shark super chrome blades, the green Proraso cream. Some shitty Van der Hagen brush

Shave about every 4 days, not really too concerned about it. Pretty even, soft hair

What were you using before? An electric razor?

Used to get a bunch of Mach series GiIIettes for free, but recently wanted to try something different. Looking for a smoother shave, and something that can controI the shape of the shave more, as weII.

>> No.7112907

I use a cheap-ass Lord razor with whatever blades are in stock at Walgreens. No brush. I have brittle, shitty, shitty hair that needs to be taken care of, or else I look like a middle school bum. I used to use the chrome Shark blades, but they ran out and I just haven't had notice to order more online. I need to shave once every four days. I do one pass with the grain, then to the side, and then against. Baby smoov.

Any recs for brushes?

long handle merkur, shark blade, proraso green, escali brush

A basic kit but I need to work on my travel accessories

>> No.7112961

Edwin Jagger DE89 with the Derbys it came with. Just got it a few weeks ago, first time using a safety razor.

Some shitty shaving foam. I'm thinking about switching over to something better soon, maybe. No brush either. I don't really know how necessary either one is, I only shave once a week after all. Hair itself is pretty shitty and rough.

>> No.7112985

let's be honest now, are safety razors really better than your average gillete mach-whatever? or are you all doing this in some kind of retro nostalgia ritual?

>> No.7112997

>>7112985
At the very least they are cheaper in the long run

And they say that the extra blades on the new razors pick up skin gunk or something and can be bad for your skin or something.

I don't need any other reasons personally, that's enough to convince me.

>> No.7113007

bought a $15 safety razor knockoff like 1 year back
somehow managed the stock razors for that time
ran out like 3 weeks ago ordered sum feathers
blood everywhere

>> No.7113015

>>7112985
it's less of an irritant. if my razor has three blades, that's three scrapes against my skin in one direction. i need at least three different pass directions for my skin to be smooth, so if i'm using a three-blade razor, that's 9 scrapes that could've been done in three, granted i'm using a safety. make sense?

and like the other guy said, it's much, much cheaper to keep buying blades than full pieces of shitty disposable plastic.

>> No.7113018

I've been using the same mach 3 head for about a month, I let it sit in rubbing alchohol. I don't use shaving cream and you can get pretty lazy with it and still not cut yourself.

>> No.7113048

>>7112985
closer cut
multi-blade gives me rashes/dried skin (i don't know if I know the difference) if i ever go up and still some rash goin down but not as much
goes hand in hand i guess with brush/cream + alum but they're not really intertwined. no one talks about that non-can crap tho unless they use safety, dunno if thats cuz safety some how does better or if its just one thing leadin to another
brush/cream is damn nice tho so comfy but takes a bit longer to prep than i'd like
and course way cheap like 35 cents a blade and they last ~4 shaves ea without dullin significantly, ~7-10 with significant dull but still useable not even comparable to $5 dollar multiblade pricing lastin you a week without sig dull
shaving cream takes ages to go through as well p sure its much cheaper than can but not sure by how much seems like it would be anyways
can never feels like its doin anything too i don't know if thats true
cans supposed to be bad for your skin but i don't know the details and never really worried about just a little cherry on top for me i guess

good for sensitive skin. most of it is probably the brush and a quality cream, but it's also ridiculously cheaper. gillette fusion blades are like $20 a pack. $20 dollars of a good blade pack for a safety razor will last you like 5 years. Also adding ritual to something like shaving is a good thing for some people. I despise shaving so every little but helps me get it done.

can you get decent shaving cream in most big supermarkets in the UK, or would I have to go to a more specialist shop? Asking cos I can only find gel or pressurised cans in my nearest tescos
