"My god, don't they know? This stuff is simulacra of simulacra of simulacra. A diluted tincture of Ralph Lauren, who himself had diluted the glory days of Brooks Brothers, who themselves had stepped on the product of Jermyn Street and Savile Row, flavoring their ready-to-wear with liberal slashings of polo knit and regimental stripes. But Tommy is surely the null point, the black hole. There must be some Tommy Hilfiger event horizon, beyond which it is impossible to be more derivative, more removed from the source, more devoid of soul"

Different H&M stores do differ from each other though and H&M can be very good as long as you don't fill your wardrobe with their clothes exclusively

I know that feel dude, almost all the (doesn't want to use the following word) swaggots I know go to Topman for their chinos, usually in olive colour.

I had a magazine called apartamento #11, it was an bi-yearly interior magazine (like 400 pages thick) focusing on 'lived-in' styles of respected 'artists' and interviewing them (photography, film, journalists etc). It seems to be pretty big in europe and there aren't many NA retailers, but vetted has #11 and #9 in stock for 20 USD. I lost the book last week so I can't give you anything specific but at the very least apartamento is something you should look into.
However, I have no idea what the price ranges were for the stores advertised (they seem to be somewhat selective about who they allow to advertise though, and the advertisements did look nice although I never got around to looking into them) and apartamento doesn't actually give any specific details on what's being pictured. It's more like an inspirational thing, I suppose.

Muji is pretty huge though if you can get to one they pretty much sell everything and they make their products well. Simple, brandless and decent pricing for their quality. Online US site has a substantial itemset but it's nowhere near the size of their larger US store supplies and even that pales in comparison to Muji stores in Japan itself.
CDT is one of my favorite japanese brands for pens and pencils. Staetdler for erasers. Midori Kraft has great envelopes. All the hard, basic and quiet (as in background) shit, Muji is just fantastic. Holders, notebooks, staplers, etc. Simple, well functioning.
