This is a concern for me as well.

Shampoo - strips off the natural oils of your hair

When you regularly use shampoo, you force your head to overproduce oils to compensate for the loss. Then when you stop using shampoo for a few days, you suddenly feel like your hair's a greasy, oily mess then your instinct tells you to use more shampoo. The cycle repeats because of the fucked up balance.

By going no poo for a long period of time, you reset everything basically. Your hair will become more manageable because the oils assist in holding your hair together so it will look thicker too rather than being all separated and "fluffy."

No shampoo for about a year now (I maybe shampoo every 4 months if I really need it or so) Ignore the shitty kept hair. Growing it out and haven't gotten it cut in months,

This is me after I was wearing a hat all day and its still. I found that when I shampoo, my hair gets way to light and puffy and basically just flops down and its impossible to style without using a fuckton of product.

eh, it made my hair a little nicer but the dandruff was bad and came at random intervals. I no poo'd around 3 times now, first for a few months, then half a year, and most recently almost a full year. Quit each time because the dandruff just became too much to deal with. That and my hair just didn't smell good. It smelled like sweat and I would clean it with conditioner and cold showers. Also the cold showers were pretty annoying too.

My recommendation is just to shampoo like once a week. It works just as well and I just use a wax or something the day after I shampoo to stop it from being super fluffy. My hair smells better and I have no dandruff. Plus I can take warm showers and don't have to scrub my hair for 10 minutes every day (my hair is naturally REALLY thick on its own). Also for some reason I was losing a lot of hair when going no poo, I guess because shampoo wasn't getting rid of the fallen out hair?

My personal opinion? I think no poo is mostly placebo mixed with some form of investigator bias. I agree shampoo strips oils, but the part about your hair regulating oils and overproducing just doesn't make any reasonable sense and absolutely no study has proven otherwise. In fact many doctors have come out and spoken against this claim. Whats instead happening is people are either becoming accustomed to their oilier hair, or they're finding someway to strip the oils through another process.

Not saying there isn't some notable effect, but not for the reasons people are listing. I feel like it's just more managable all around to just use shampoo less often than cut it out completely.

Here's one more, but when its actually brushed.

Its ashame, I usually don't wear my hair without a hat because I'm growing it out and at the current length it looks really unkept from the back.

Also if anyone has any no poo questions I'll answer them. I've tried about every no poo style out there.

And FYI, when you're not using shampoo, you should be washing your hair under water for three to four times longer than you normally would. Be very rough and almost give yourself a deep tissue massage. Helps keep your roots healthy which makes all the difference.

It depends. When I first started I used baking soda and water because my hair was just a mess. I did that every day, for about 2 weeks. Then after that I would use the soda maybe 1-2 a week, only when I really needed it. After about a month I was completely 100% water only.

Also to people that say it takes 2-3 months. It does and it doesn't. Everyone's body's produce oils at different levels. For example, if you produce above average amounts, no matter what no poo regime you use it won't work.

My advice would be that if no poo doesn't seem to be working after a month to two months max, give up because it won't be worth it in the long run.

the reason i do my hair last isnt because it somehow helps, its because i like extremely hot showers, but its bad for your skin and scalp, so i turn the temperature down for my scalp.

Is it worth going for nopoo if I have thin hair? (not balding, I've just had thinner than average hair all my life) Most nopoo success stories such as yours look really thick. Is it because nopoo improves the thickness or at least the appearance of thickness of your hair, or that it simply works best for people with already thick hair? When I go day or two without washing my hair just sort of mats down on my scalp and loses volume rather than gaining it. Is that typical of the 'adjustment period' or is nopoo just not for me?

>> No.7020112

>>7020064

Ok, this is what I do, step by step.

1. Put my hair under the water and wash as I normally would for about 1-2 minutes.
2. Massage my scalp, run fingers through scalp, scratch lightly to really get it clean. Its also a great destressing technique. Do this for another 1-2 minutes.
3. One quick rinse maybe 30-45 seconds.

When I'm out of the shower, I towel dry so my hair is about 80%-85% dry. At this point I brush my hair back completely so it will dry relatively straight.

Now this is wear I have some variation. I usually throw a hat on for about an hour or so so that way it will dry pushed back rather than putting product in my hair. I find if I just stop before this step my hair will eventually just flop down into my eyes and I have to keep brushing it.

By doing this I'm able to style it without using any product which when you're using no poo, makes a big difference.

Its hard to say without seeing your hair, but you're sort of right. Thick haired people such as myself benefit from it more. It would also depend on what style of hair you have. I really think the people who benefit most from nopoo are people who either have curly hair, wavy hair, or long hair. No poo with 1-2" hair just won't reap as many benefits.

Nopoo doesn't really improve thickness per say, it just gives it a different appearance. If I had any recent nopoo pictures I would post them but like I said early, I've been doing it for over a year now so its been awhile. More than anything nopoo gives your hair shape rather than the "moppy" look.

Not if you wash it for long enough like I said. As funny as it sounds It depends if you're a "smelly" person to begin with.

If you do have problems with that, its nothing to be ashamed of. What I would do if you're trying to stay in the realms of natural hair, is look into natural herbals such as lavender. Just crush up a little, mix it with some baking soda, and do that maybe 2-3 times a week if you're having smell problems.

Also referring back to what I said; I still OWN shampoo. If I can tell my hair needs to be washed I wash it. After that it takes about a week again for my hair to go from puffy and light to workable.

Lastly like I said I said, it isn't for everyone. If you just have a smelly head, you may NEED shampoo.

no poo essentially just makes your hair better, that's it. It make your hair able to hold its own for longer, meaning it's going to take longer before greasiness and dandruff sets in. I used to have this happen to me after maybe 2-3 days, whereas now, I've gone for at least a week without washing at all and there's no oily crap or dandruff. The smell it gets after a week is about the same as day 3-4 of not washing (which isn't bad, it's just a, you know, "hair" smell, no fancy shampoo smell) so it's ok.

That is so bullshit. The fact is that the oil in your hair catches debris and dust, so in the end you have a layer of dust and random shit from the air "sandwitching" the oil between your hair. Also the oil tends to make hairs stick together, and unless you pick that shit out with a fine tooth comb, you'll get loads of knots.

I've been doing BS/V for about 11 months now, though I mostly just do BS/conditioner now.
White vinegar tends to make my hair shinier but apple cider vinegar tends to bring out red highlights.
My curly-ish hair hates being detangled when dry, so I do it in the shower with conditioner. Make sure to use silicone/dimethicone free conditioner if you do decide to go that route.

Also, I have seborrheic dermatitis and using baking soda regularly (once or two a week) really helped this. When I first started doing no-poo I had a really hard time with the SD, but a baking soda paste scrubbed into my scalp normally cleared it up. After a while it was just no longer an issue. Be careful about not totally dissolving the baking soda though, the grit can tear up hair.

You can wash with just conditioner, it's called co-washing, it's fairly common among curly heads. I just use VO5 conditioner for this, it's silicone free, cheap, smells nice, and you're going to use a lot if you have long hair. Check out the Long Hair Community forum for more CO stuff.

I HAVE experience with it, but my head is self destructing. I used to do BS + ACV and my hair was the best on the block. Went swimming back in August, hair still won't recover. Tried BS + ACV, nope. Try ACV only, nope. Try water only washing, DEFINITELY nope.
So I got a shower head with a filter in it the other week and tried BS and ACV. I cleaned it too well I think, BUT I haven't showered since and my hair feels...decent actually. So I'm gonna start water only to see what happens.

IF you live in a hard water area, highly recommend a shower head regardless. Do some googling. /fa/ isn't the best bunch, but some google searching will net you a lot of suggestions to make no poo work.
Most no pooers on this board are "water only or get the fuck out" no pooers. But with some natural conditioners and good care, it'll work for most people. Even long hair. If it doesn't, you do get to know your hair better anyways.

Following a 2007 radio interview that Australian Richard Glover held with Matthew Parris (a Times columnist "who hadn't shampooed for more than a decade"), Glover "decided to challenge his audience to go without shampoo for six weeks". Of the over 500 participants in the challenge, 86 percent reported that "their hair was either better or the same" following the challenge.

just use less and less shampoo each time you shower. then only shampoo every other time you shower. then use less shampoo each time. then only poo twice a week. less, 1 time per week. less poo. never. thats what i did, that way my hair didnt freak out and get super oily like you hear people complaining. if you take long enough to wean off, should be a smooth transition. however, be prepared to have super oily weird hair for at least a month. i cant elaborate on that since it didnt happen for me.

after that part is done, only wash your hair in cold water. like your giving yourself a deep tissue massage on your head. that gets out dandruff. it will take some experimentation. too much will leave you no oil at all, to little and you will have too much oil and will start to smell bad.

ive been nopooing for only a few months, but i read ever single no poo thread to make sure im doing it right.

i always had good hair before, but now its god tier

Here's no poo hair on day two. That's two days after washing it.
Still looks like hair, no flakes, no oil slick, no smell.
Close up is on scalp since that's what gets nasty first.

Shampoo once a week, switching from non-dandruff and organic shampoo. Organic conditioner every 2 days.

Never fully dry my hair, run in about a teaspoon of jojoba oil after shower while still wet with my hands. Comb it sometimes. The oil helps, my hair is generally really dry, makes it soft but not oily looking. Natures Blessing is also great pomade.

This is about 3 months of hair grow, been on this regiment for about 6 months.

If you haven't already you could try going full curly, emphasizing the curls and not doing things to contain them. Treat your hair like curly hair: oil, wide tooth combs, never brushing, detangling only in the shower, conditioner out the wazoo, plopping, etc.
You have curly hair, don't treat it like straight hair.

That's not what they were asking dufus.
You can start stretching washes, the longer you no poo the less often you'll need to wash. I can go 6-7 days max, some people can do 2 weeks+, my boyfriend still washes everyday with just water. It's different for different hair types.

>> No.7034891

>>7034868
You might like conditioner only washing. It would keep the hair soft and still clean, but it wouldn't dry out your scalp.

>> No.7034914

Well I've gone from needing shampoo for greasy hair every 2 days to once a month.

You still wash with water and a little conditioner or tee tree oil OP.
