You'll note that fixie and fixed gear both have 2 syllables. My point was that it seems all British slang revolves around abbreviating and adding an ie suffix.

It's personal preference. Some people value the greatly reduced maintenance of a fixed gear over a geared road bike for example. This was one of my own prime motivations when I rode one.

>>7002996
I live in Seattle and commuted 10 miles round trip each day and another 20-40 on the weekends for leisure. You don't need to live in a flat area to ride fixed, you just need to take 5 minutes to research an appropriate gear ratio that will get you up hills without spinning out going down them.

Syllables aren't that important in determining contractions/slang.
It's more the amount of maneuvers the mouth has to make for each syllable. For instance, the movement of the mouth to pronounce the 'd' ending of 'fixed' and the 'g' beginning of 'gear' is a lot more difficult and labored than the movement from the 'x' straight to the 'e' sound in 'fixie'.

In fact, 'fixie' is only 2 sounds. 'fi' and 'xee'.

'Fixed-Gear' is far more, the exact number of movements of the mouth could be different depending on your class and accent but it's probably 3-4.

In language, useless shit doesn't survive long. Especially in languages spoken over large areas/many groups.

Dumb cunt.

Call it what you like, sieg, I ride with headphones in and can't hear the ramblings of those I overtake.

I don't know much about fixed gear bikes but they sure do look pretty. Dumping my folder.

One of my favorite conversions, though if they're running a back brake, they might as well use hoods instead of interrupters.

You try to buy a decent, used bike where everything works and try to make it look as shitty as possible so nobody will steal it. If it gets stolen anyway, buy a new bike for 30 euro. Rinse and repeat.

At least, that's how we do it in the Netherlands. If you buy a nice looking bike, expect it to get stolen in a month.

I got this bike gifted by my grandpa, any idea what they go for used?

(not gonna sell it, just curious)

Everyone uses more than one lock (usually two like the other anon said), so it's the same amount of trouble to pick any bike. They're going to get the best looking bike they can find.

Singlespeeds are dying off in Stockholm, being replaced by the classic Dutch style again, plus 'cross. Fixies were momentarily popular here but most opted for a freewheel instead.

The bike messengers ride racers.

Don't tell the Dutch how to manage their bike. They do it better than you, guaranteed.
