I'm not from this board, and I hate to bother you guys with this, but why do people actually care about fashion? Like I mean I guess I think dresses from fashion designers can be beautiful works of art, but I don't really have any desire to try to dress nice.

Fashion is much deeper than a desire to dress nice. For many people on this board, it's a means of self-improvement through purchasing items (which speaks to the wider postmodern condition). It affects different people in different ways, but generally unless you're making your clothes by hand yourself, without using fabric you can buy in stores, you are subscribing to a social practice that is centred around creating a personal aesthetic for oneself.
your clothing already have an ascribed social value. Whether you buy $2 cotton Hanes tees or $200 RO silk/modal basics, your clothing sends a message to the world that has become more important than the expression on your face.

Ok, looking back at that, that just makes me sound awfully pretentious. It just that fashion seems like a significantly less stimulating hobby than many others. I mean it's cool if people care about fashion but if that's all they care about that's kind of scary. It really more depends on the motives behind the person being interested in fashion. If there into fashion because they want to look hip or whatever that kind of makes me sick. if their into fashion because they like designing stuff or whatever than that seems a lot more noble.

People are always looking for forms of superiority. If you want to follow Buss' theory of sexual differences, we can assume that guaranteeing the survival of children is the most important "innate" factor here. At one point, it was important for a male to be strong in order to protect his children. Now it's important for him to have money. Women have to show their sexual appeal in order to mate as many times as possible before they expire. Some suggest that we use fashion to show our wealth, our ability to support ourselves, our inclusion in a particular social group, and to attract mates. There are many more layers, but that covers a lot.

The only people who do this are entry level plebs, and those people aren't into fashion for fashion, they're just into fashion for status. People who've ascended no longer care that other people don't share their passion.

The idea that people who are into fashion are shallow or superficial is a misconception. Recognizing the importance of appearance and becoming interested in the topic does not mean you are inherently shallow or disregard the importance of other aspects of life.

Reading your posts it really seems like you actually don't know anything about the hobby. Examine how you feel about fashion given that you really don't know enough about it to even be sure of your own feelings (if you were sure we wouldn't be having this conversation.) It's somewhat ignorant to form an opinion on something if you don't even understand it.

I can't speak for everyone, but I know I like fashion because I really appreciate aesthetics and building an aesthetic around my life.

I pay a lot of attention to details in my clothes, in the decor of my room, and in the media I watch.

Once you immerse yourself in it, It can be an incredibly stimulating and involving. You see a piece of clothing and you can imagine a dozen combinations of outfits, it becomes second nature to analyze whatever you see people wearing on the street, and you learn a lot about them just by the way they present themselves.

Being into fashion, for me at least, isn't just about wearing "hip" clothes, its about cultivating a lifestyle.

I'm guessing the reason it makes you sick is because you find it a vain hobby, and it is in some ways, but I don't see it as any more vain than a bodybuilding hobby or a makeup hobby.

As for the motivations behind it, I think I can say pretty confidently that a lot of us here dream of designing clothes, but it is about as unrealistic as just becoming a professional interior designer. It takes years and years of school and the chances of making a fruitful career out of either profession is slim to none, so instead we buy clothes to build an aesthetic, or buy furniture and paintings to decorate a room.

fashion is like interior decorating, basically

Fashion is constantly recycled. Multiple elements from 80s and 90s fashion are being used in fashion today, even if you aren't aware of it. The ideas you have of 80s and 90s fashion are probably exaggerated concepts you found from movies and other media. Not everyone wore bright neon clothing in the 80s, and not everyone in the 90s had a mullet and cargo shorts.

fashion is as important a cultural artifact as movies or literature

fashion is a lifestyle, not just the way you dress. people's "hobbies" don't exist in a vacuum. same way people identify as engineers or artists or whatever, it's not like an artist is going to draw and be passionate about value and space and color and then somehow fucking not have any of this transfer. when I catch a train or go for a walk or decide what cereal to eat, it's not an isolated thing, it's all colored by my experiences and values, and whether you are a passionate magic the gathering player or you care about your sikk fades it's all going to influence you.

obviously you don't know anything about fashion, and you don't seem to give a shit either so I"m not really sure why you're here if not just trolling. in the grand scheme of things you sound super uncool, actually, like what the fuck do you even do that makes you better? that gives you your view on the whole thing?

fast fashion is just like fast food, it's not really justifiable in any way and supporting these corporations fucks shit up for everyone in the end. it's run by keeping slaves in third world contries, draining their resources as well as their workers, it fucks up the environment, drives up the prices of every other brand/designer/label, either consuming the smaller ones or destroying them completely, it skews the average westerner's sense of quality to price-ratio.....

>awful superficial people

I never understood the whole fashion = superficiality thing.

Let's forget about this whole concept of people like, reading GQ and then buying what they see, because most of my exposure to fashion has been on /fa/ and this whole thing doesn't exist to me.

To me, fashion is no more superficial than painting. It's artistic expression. Organizing an outfit is analogous to creating a work of art, which is why the qualities of a good fit are the same as the qualities of good art; they can convey a message, create discomfort, portray an aesthetic, break expectations, whatever.

For "real" fashion, dressing for the approval of others is pretty much, to me, the same as painting something for other artists to see and critique. It's an element, certainly, but there's nothing ignoble about it. And just like art, you can do whatever the fuck you want but there's still fundamentals that you can learn and break.

I don't know why I'm even making comparisons to art. Fashion IS art. There's probably a bunch of fucks in art school who are doing it for the wrong reasons too, but for some reason it's fashion where the bullshit is the norm to the uninitiated.

I'm not even gonna bother reading the rest of this thread OP, but for me, cultivating style is about becoming my own role model. I used to have a very thoroughly imagined image of who I wanted to be when I grew up and I started dressing well when I realized I could already be that person. There's something that feels extremely protagonistic about being in control of what you look like.

The visual progress is very gratifying. It's helped me become my own role model you know? It feels great. I don't really care about following trends or picking up fashionable girls. Style for me is just about conveying who I want to be. When people see me they already know what kind of people I like up to, who I admire. no one cares about the 80s and 90s clothing that you're thinking of. absolutely no one. what we care about is the cutting edge abstraction that started in the late 70s and gained serious momentum in the 80s and 90s, which proved how amorphous the concept of fit is, which changed the rules on how clothing could be constructed and redefined what is a finished garment, and which made monumental leaps in the disciplines of draping and drafting.
