Hipster is all about wearing clothes that don't truly reflect your personal style.

source: all the consumerist fakes I see in Williamsburg.

>> No.6773869

>>6770479

“Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.

It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).

You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That’s because you don’t use “hipster” to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.

The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.

I never said they have to make their own clothes, so pull your head out of your ass. Personal style is one that reflects what you do, what you like, and what kind of person you are. i.e. - A biker will wear a leather jacket, jeans, boots, maybe be tatted and have a beard. Someone who does manual labor/construction might wear work boots and some thick denim.

Now hipsters, they just mix match and grab from backgrounds/cultures that aren't theirs. This is the whole "ironic" thing about it. If you've ever been to Williamsburg, you'd know what I'm talking about, but I'm gunna take a wild guess that you are some angsty sheltered little boy who doesn't have the faintest idea about style.

nah it just sounds like you like to overly pigeonhole people and you want different people to stay compartmentalised within one style, which is ridiculous

so bikies can't wear suits to their jobs? construction workers can't wear skinny jeans and hi-tops on the weekends?

people that mix and match from different cultures either do it well or don't. if they look like shit it's because they went overboard with it, not because "oh they don't 'own' it so they can't wear it". when you have a cultural melting pot that's what happens, people borrow from other places to try and create synergy. of course that dickhead wearing pyrex shorts with a kurta and desert boots is going to look terrible, but its because they simply don't look good together

>he hasn't been a place i have, that means he doesn't know anything!!!
nah fuck off faggot i don't live in the states, and you making that retarded assumption only serves to make you look even more ignorant. continue labelling people based on a ridiculous concept of "authenticity" though
