I read about a guy who polished the chrome layer away and then put the watch in eggs for 2 days. The result was this really cool layer of verdigris on the bezel.

I suppose that list isn't in strict order from best to worst, because IWC really shouldn't be at the top.

The absolute best manufacturers are (arguably):
Patek Philippe
Audemar Piguet
Vacheron Constantin
Maybe JLC because they have so many awesome in house calibers
Best non-swiss brand is probably A. Lange & Söhne.

Breitling is fucking disgusting and Omega has pretty much ruined their brand value that they built during the 60s and 70s because of all their 1000 different models, quartz watches during the 90s, desperate 007 "special editions". And George Clooney. Vintage Omega is awesome, though.

Their design mentality is "make the biggest, fattest, most macho watch in the world and slap maximum amount of shit onto the dial". The bezels (the ring around the dial) are grotesque and the marketing consists of images of jet fighters and fighter pilots walking into the sunset.

It's a watch typically found on taxi drivers and carpenters, that kind of people.

Refurbishing lowers the second hand value. Plus the patina shows that the watch has been used for 40+ years.

A cool example is the Rolex watches that have been exposed to a lot of moist and tropical climates during a long time. Their dials can get mold all over them, which is actually quite beautiful. The Submariner pictured sold for $29,000.

Of course not all watches age as well as a Rolex...

No. You've got it wrong. The absolute best manufacturers, as you say, are independant watchmakers. Patek, Vacheron, Lange and arguably JLC and AP are the best... "Mainstream"(I know it's a bad choice of words) houses, but you got so much more options if you look at less well known or even entirely independant watchmakers.

George Daniels, Roger Smith, Kari Voutilainen, Philippe Dufour, Thomas Prescher... When it comes to independants, they're the best.

Then you have the peculiar ones - Greubel Forsey, Urwerk, MB&F, Sarpaneva, FP Journe, Richard Mille... I forgot a few, but the Patek/VC/Lange trinity is certainly not the best.

What's wrong with hamilton or tissot? They have good movements and the design/fit/finish is top quality.

If we're talking strictly as a status symbol and not simply being able to look good and tell the time then you may have a point.

I wear a fake rolex daytona exactly the same as pic related.

Its one with great detail, it has some sort of automatic movement (it gains about 2-4mins every week, could be because of the way I lay the watch down maybe?).

It's pretty funny conversation piece because of my job role in a charity store.

I can't be bothered taking a proper photo of it

they started out as a watchmaker for pilots, everything on their dial has a use it's just likely that the average buyer won't be utilising all its features.

It's the same concept as having a 500m water resistant submariner type watch when you never have nor ever will go scuba diving

doesn't change the fact that added features/potential make a watch (sometimes) better looking or more desirable than others

Thinking about buying a watch, I got a "real" job finally so I thought I'd buy something a little nicer (for my standards) that I could wear everyday and everywhere. These two are currently in consideration. They're both Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono, 42mm. The one on the right is, I think, and older version, since it's 155€ cheaper than the other (980€ vs 825€). I think I'm leaning at the cheaper version at the moment.

What does /fa/ think about the brand or the watches? I will probably eventually get another strap for it, or three.

The rock bottom tier for skeleton watches can be found on ebay. $10 for a watch with the skeletonized Chinese standard movement in a chrome-plated brass metal case that may or may not arrive working.

I have a dress watch of similar origins that is running quite well. It looks like this. Luckily, it correctly reads "Automatic" and not "Automatio". They're cheap, fun, and useful for getting into watchmaking. Which is pretty much what I did.

As for a quality skeleton, I normally wouldn't recommend a fashion brand, but Fossil and KC both use fine skeletonized Seagull movements. Finding a Swiss skeleton that won't cost you an arm and a leg will be tough.

Still sounds pretty steep for what it is. As I noted earlier, Fossil sources from Seagull and since Fossil's not an actual watch movement manufacturer, going to them with potential problems with your watch could be troublesome. Actual Seagull-branded might be better but they may be difficult to acquire depending on your location.

Skeletons aren't really my thing but watchuseek has countless threads about affordable, quality, skeleton watches.

I take back what I said earlier: Swatch has an interesting looking Skeleton called the "Body and Soul".
