Hey /fa/, I'm a stranger here, but I come seeking your wisdom.

I'm a filmmaker, looking to design some costumes for a science fiction web series.

I'm interested in fabric with the texture of pic related (a little shiny, with some kind of underpattern).

It looks like some kind of athletic performance fabric stuff, but I can't find a name or anything like it. Using plain spandex or traditional fabrics will make my sci-fi costumes look like Star Trek or Buck Rogers uniforms.

Also, Superman's uniform in Man of Steel has a great texture for photography.

Thanks for any help you can offer (manufacturers, names of fabric, webstores, alternatives)--and also, sci-fi fashion thread?

You're probably just looking for any iridescent fabric in a color you need

>>6560295
Any favorites? I'll google "iridescent fabric" right now.

Other cool/unusual textures I should look at?

I can't wait for the "spray on" fabric to come out. I could even see working it into a scene if we dress up the can to look like a little more snazzy.

OP again

Superman's suit from Man of Steel. Not a fan of the design overall (though not bad for a movie superhero) but I love the way the fabric catches the light.

Sorry for the large file.

bumping with another example.

This is Speedo Fastskin, but it seems like they don't sell the raw fabric.

Any tips on applying patterns to fabric with paint or the like?

I'm also considering using piping to draw some leading lines into the costumes.

Troll?

Anyway, "fabrics" like that of the superman suit are specially made just for the costumes by professional costume makers. It's not actually a fabric, either, it's most likely foam neoprene rubber (like a wetsuit), embossed and painted. Stuff like that is not mass produced because no one uses it in reality.

There are a few options, though. But, I wouldn't recommend large patches of iridescent fabrics, that will look silly. Search for textured neoprene, that seems to get a few hits. Also search for chrome fabric- the companies that make that stuff tend to make lots of other neat stuff as well. If you use a few ostentatious fabrics sparingly, you can make fairly normal clothes look tastefully futuristic. But, if you really want to go all out like the superman suit, you'll need to find yourself a real costumer.

Not a troll, but yeah, sorry about the wack examples.

Know of any tutorials for modifying neoprene in that way? Or the best paint to use?

Agreed about the iridescent fabric--some look cool, but using alot could look dangerously retro-futuristic--and I can tell that some of it will read poorly on camera.

this looks like a mildly abstracted chainmail texture, it's definitely enhanced with cgi and probably beyond the resources that will be available to you.

regardless, you're probably going to be looking at a lot of knits in fibers like rayon or nylon, nylon meshes, neoprene....

Also--I definitely want to avoid the spandex morphsuits. I'm shocked when even well funded indies go that route.

Obviously this is a low budget indie project, but I think attention to detail in props and costumes will offset the limited SFX budget.

you can get something similar out of a waffle knit, but i don't know what that is or whether or not it's been embossed.

I will be begging favors from designers to do the fundraising trailer (doing some of the time consuming work myself), and hopefully hiring them on if we get funded.

producing from cloth is going to be expensive. you might get some mileage from painting, waxing, or otherwise coating things.

That's pretty cool! I can see people in the future working against nano magic high tech fabrics with stuff that looks more rustic/messy.

>>6560667
I'm definitely considering painting or modifying swim wear or athletic wear. Motocross armor and technical running gear is also a possibility, but I'd have to do a lot of work to keep it from looking like a complete joke.

There may be a few episodes where it's worth throwing a few hundred-1k bucks at a really critical costume piece.

Pretty cool! Some expensive stuff, but I can see a few items that would make good costume pieces with a few frills dialed back, and some accessories.

Here's a bona-fide /fa/ question--how might I approach a designer for the loan of a piece? Any designers I should look into (obviously people who are trying to get established or would appreciate the publicity, as long as it didn't damage the piece).

I remember seing ads for that kind of material you are looking for in most design magazines in the early naughties (2000-2003), this kind of hi techy hexagonal woven with many textures and prices.
Too bad I can't remember the name of the company
If you can get ahold of a bunch of design/architecture magazines from that period you can track it down.
It was an incredible material to say the least
