I've always thought of it as a pretty noble thing, small but noble, working to create a drink and environment that's rich and stimulating and cozy and warm and exciting and full, something that's so basic and essential to so many people's lives. Worst would be the typical office career track bullshit where the texture of the work is dealing with trivial, arbitrary, and uninteresting demands, usually to do something with little to no, or even a negative, impact on the world and people around you.

Could I be a barista my whole life? Well, I wouldn't mind paying the bills that way. I write, and I've got high artistic and cultural ambitions there I feel the need to be satisfied eventually. But I don't care about the whole advance-for-a-brownstone game.
