Mirrors are a flipped image of yourself, that's why when you take a photo it's what people REALLY see. So you're not used to seeing yourself like that.

The problem with the photo is that if you're using a shitty camera and bad lighting, you're going to look shit.

If you have good natural lighting on hand, then take a portrait photo at eye level height (preferably) on a tripod. That should give you a good idea of how people see you.

I too look good in the mirror and see myself as a shitface in photos, especially when I take them myself. When people take my photo, they understand angles, lighting and all that shit and it turns out wonderful (most of the time).

you realise that a mirror flipping the image makes absolutely no changes to your appearance except making it all flipped, right?

like the actual structure and symmetry and everything of your face is absolutely identical to what you really look like, being a much more accurate view of what you look like then a shitty phone camera that distorts everything.

there is only one thing that matters and that is the focal length of the camera lens

because an image is orientated differently a person would perceive it differently.

just like how people perceive arrows pointing in different directions to mean different things.

that's a social construct that you only take note of when shown contrast. that would never apply to your face

>> No.5981109

>>5981101
the fundamental neural operation is the same...

You associate an idea with a image, when the image is altered as is the connotation and you associate new ideas to the image.

It's what you consider a 'social construct' but the only social implication being whatever feeling you consciously/sub-consciously associated with the image at the time.

light is still light your eyes don't discern red from blue only your mind does.

its true buddy. when you see a non flipped image aka a picture, it looks bad/different to you because it looks different than what we are used to seeing in the mirror

>you realise that a mirror flipping the image makes absolutely no changes to your appearance except making it all flipped, right?

yes exactly! but your brain somehow sees it differently

i am the only one who's ever done some drawing on photoshop?
drawing a portrait, after looking at the same face for a couple of hours, if you flip the entire image suddenly your mistakes become very clear. "the left ear is a bit too high, the nose too wide" etc.

google found this guy suggesting what i talked about
http://www.jachestudio.com/blog/artists-tip-2-use-a-mirror-to-see-your-mistakes
but i can't find any scientific name for this phenomenon, to prove to you that it exists

>> No.5981401

isn't there some stat that the brain makes yourself look 5% more beautiful than you really are?

also remember, the brain self edits

>> No.5981413

Flipping a fixed image is not the same as looking at your face in the mirror. Grab two mirrors and position yourself so you can see the reflection of your reflection in them.

Humans instinctively look to the left when seeing another person, to see the right side of their face. That is the side that usually shows the most emotion and shows emotions first. This may be a reason why it looks a little weird to see a flipped face, our body doesn't treat both sides of the face the same.
