This one smells pretty nice. Bit soapy with a realistic smelling pine needle accord and oakmoss. Has a bit of underlying sweetness that seems like an unlisted dry tobacco note. My only complaint is that English Laundry Windsor is a god awful clone of this with a bunch of weird extra notes thrown in, and I smelled that first so it reminds me of it. God that one fucking sucks though. The scent profile isn’t horrible, but there’s this synthetic thing that made me nauseous the first time I wore it. The quality difference between the two is night and day, but it definitely triggers that memory when I smell this.

But this would make a great classy work scent. Very understated and clean. Makes sense that this brand is popular with bougie Bonglish types. It’s pretty much how I’d expect Pierce Brosnan to smell.

I prefer GV to TdH by leaps and bounds, but they aren't all that similar to me. GV is much greener and has a very lovely tobacco/vanilla drydown. The only real similarity is the vetiver note to me. But I like Terres d'Hermes as well. If I had to pick one or the other I'd go GV simply because you don't really see it too often in the wild anymore. I smell TdH everywhere. Hmm... I haven't smelled any of them, but Sauvage is currently the most popular fragrance by a wide margin so plenty of other people think it smells nice. My only advice to you is to pick what smells best to you. Virtually every fragrance that is made will smell 'nice' at least to most people. When you spray on your fragrance or smell it on yourself you should have a positive feeling because you like the smell and it feels special to you. Don't choose something because lots of other people like it, and on the other end avoid the hipster mentality of reflexively disliking a fragrance because it is popular.

in any case boozy scents are neither refined nor for gentleman. get mouchoir de monsieur, nyi or renta pour lui for something like that. if you feel like they're for old farts, skill issue. there are barely any modern gentleman scents because everybody is a bum wearing jogging pants now.

>> No.18117062

The more I learn about this house, the more respect I gain for the sheer fucking audacity of Olivier Creed. This glorious bastard was charging $500 a bottle for Pierre Bourdon's sloppy seconds and passing them off as bespoke fragrances made for celebrities and royalty and saying his company was 300 years old.

A bottle of Tabarome Millesime, a fragrance that was created in the year of our Lord 2000 that even Creed fans seem to dislike, costs $495 and they still maintain the lie that it was worn by Winston Churchill. Meanwhile, Floris sells Special No. 127, a fragrance that Churchill actually wore with hand written orders signed by the man himself to prove it, for $150.

They have multiple documented royal warrants from kings and queens throughout history, including one from Elizabeth II that is still technically active, and yet the most expensive products they sell are their bespoke fragrances which cost 586 USD. Actually think about that for a second. For a hundred bucks more than a bottle of Aventus, you can sit down for two hours and have a bespoke fragrance made to your exact specifications hand poured by the people who perfumed the goddamn Queen of England herself. And not only that, but they will keep your formula in their records forever so that your great, great, great, great grand children can order a bottle in the year 2500 should they should feel so inclined.

And yet not only was Olivier Creed able to get away with selling rejected formulas for triple the price of what actual royal perfumers charge based on a completely fabricated story, but he also immediately abandoned the "passed down from father to son for three centuries" schtick and walked away with a billion dollars of Blackrock's money. Say what you will about his perfume, but the balls on this man are incalculable. Actual god-tier chicanery. You can't help but respect it.

correction: the oil house hired by the successors of the art directors who perfumed the queen of england. floris uses oil houses just like any other brand, and both the original art directors who were around when elizabeth commisioned her bespoke perfume as well as the aformenetioned people who actually perfumed her are both long dead and gone. in other words, it’s still a ripoff, but still far from the con job that is aventus or anything creed has ever made.

I doubt her perfumers are dead and gone, she only died a year and a half ago. Unless she pulled a Pharoah and had all her favorite craftsmen buried alive with her body so they can continue to serve her in the afterlife, in which case, holy fucking based

At any rate, a royal warrant is issued to a company whose goods are routinely purchased by particular royal family members (usually the monarch, the heir apparent and the consort to the monarch) and is renewed in five year intervals. The Queen issued a royal warrant for perfume to Floris in the late 70s and renewed it every five years until 2019, which means she was regularly purchasing perfume from them right up until the day she died.

I honestly don't know enough about the company to say where they source their oils from so I'll just assume you're right, but at the end of the day, the title of perfumer goes to the person who composed the fragrance, not the oil house. And as for their bespokes, it's not like they call up Firmenich and pass along your request. You go to the store, tell them you're envisioning and they pour it on the spot and adjust it to your satisfaction all in the same day.

At less than $600 dollars, I would be hard pressed to call that level of service a rip-off if we were talking about an indie perfumer on etsy, much less the oldest fragrance house in Great Britain. Guerlain charges $130,000 for their bespoke service. Guerlain is an infinitely more iconic house (plus that bee bottle is fucking goat), but a $129,000 price differential is pretty steep. Honestly, Floris has some of the fairest prices in the game for this sort of brand. They can get up to around $300+, but most of their popular fragrances cost less than $150 retail and can be found at discounters for around $45.

Actually, after a very extensive five minute google investigation, I am now comfortable saying that I don't think they use the big oil firms. Well, probably. It's hard to tell exactly what they mean, but they claim to directly source the crops used to make their oils and absolutes, but also that they are sourced from a small family of suppliers, and that they keep a small supply chain in order to maintain direct traceability of all materials they use. I doubt you could do that with the big oil houses.

They also clarify that their fragrances are composed by a 9th generation family member, Edward Bodenham, and his team of two assistants, Penny Ellis and Nicola Pozzani. The three also run the bespoke service.

Reading through their site, they're pretty much making all the same claims Creed used to make, only I don't think they're lying. Apart from giving the company a perceived boost in prestige, the royal warrant is meant to function as an indicator to consumers that a company has a high standard of quality, ethics and sustainability. In order to be approved, a company is thoroughly vetted by the Royal Family Household Committee and is subject to inspection at regular intervals. The warrant can be revoked if the committee finds that the company is no longer living up to their previous standard. A company lying about their business practices would also be grounds for immediate revocation. All of this is taken with deathly seriousness. The reputation of Prince Andrew's family is on the line. Should a single one of these goofy reptilian space Jews look stupid for even a moment, Britannia herself would fall.

Which is also probably the reason they don't raise their prices arbitrarily. If they suddenly tripled the price of their perfume, they would have to explain why they did it.

It's a bone dry leather chypre. If youve ever smelled Cabochard (which frankly should be a prerequisite for posting in these threads, it would go a long way to ameliorating some of the recent... unpleasantness...) then it smells very similar, except slimmed down for a masculine palate. Of course this isn't surprising as both were composed by the incomperable Bernard Chant.
