I do too...for a while, I wanted to get one. All because of Clive Cussler, of course, and because in the diving community they are utterly unique and well-respected.

Crazy thing is that they had them for the early ETA-based movements before...Prince William still wears a mid-size Seamaster Quartz that Princess Diana gave him. If they brought out midsize, they'd kill it...but I think the problem is with the co-axial movement.

>>18081337
I think this is cool. I've never bought out of a boutique before, so I'm glad they gave you and royal treatment. Love your 3861 btw...thinking of getting one if/when they land on the moon again. Is it performing well?

Bracelet, of course. The only reason to do moonshine gold is to flex, so why not go all the way. The only reason I don't get one is that the Rolex President Day-Date is still a 'perfect' watch by comparison, though I favour the vintage versions over the modern iteration. Finally, you could always get the rubber strap after.

>>18081487
I know. Watchbase is fucking awesome for what info they actually have. I don't like Selita movements; they're measurably inferior to ETA, so I avoid them like the plague. Doesn't help that Swatch Group prevents companies outside from using ETA now. If only I could still buy a Laco Flieger with a proper ETA again.

Not only that, but the function of a gold watch is to show others that they are inferior. A gold watch on a rubber strap (or an 'Oysterflex') is bullshit. It's a cope. It's an inappropriate combination of aesthetics, and it looks cheap. If the owner wants to wear it on leather or rubber, fine, but it shouldn't appear as if the owner simply couldn't afford the correct full bracelet combination and opted for the cheaper equivalent.

In what ways? Because in my experience servicing them, there is hardly any difference. If anything Sellita has the advantage of availability for spare parts.
Not to mention, ETA may very well be on the way towards using the shitass Powermatics with an expiry date as the basis, phasing regular mainsprings and escapements out.
Soprods have been the real bed-shitters in my experience.

What other reason is there to spend multiples more than a stainless-steel version? Even the practical elements degrade in front of your eyes. Gold is softer, more prone to scratches. It's not more resistant to corrosion than modern stainless steel. It's not more water-proof, or anti-magnetic, or anything else. It's just gold....a material that is a wealth-signifyer in many parts of the world. If you want a stealth-wealth, go white gold or platinum...but if yellow-gold (and moonshine gold), then it's a flex. C'mon...are you being serious?

>>18081551
Check out Archer's posts on WUS regarding the differences between the two. I trust his assessments and photographic evidence. In short, there is usually more wear on specific elements and/or parts on Sellita movements than on the ETA movements they are based on, simply because the Sellita designs cut corners to save costs and/or are derivatives of already proven movements.

I would avoid Sellita like the plague. But ultimately most people today don't have the luxury. If a watch is disposable, then no problem...when you get it serviced, just drop in a new Sellita movement. But if you want something tuned to your habits, go for ETA every time in this price bracket.

It's probably a reason I tend to hate modern microbrands. But I think I'm just an old fart. It's easy to laud the Lemania 321 or 5100, or the Valjoux 7750 variants....tried, tested, and true. But they have time on their side. I have no idea if the 3861 will last (now that they've fixed the center pinion issue), or if the Rolex 33xx movements are truly corrected. It's all the same in the end; does the watch perform the way you want with the reliability you require?

Chinese movements are shit...but if cleaned up and regulated, they can run well....for now. I think the 'expectations' of modern horological enthusiasts are far out of line for what is possible and capable.

Why do you think I love vintage watches more than modern?

>you get it serviced, just drop in a new Sellita movement. But if you want something tuned to your habits, go for ETA every time in this price bracket.
Funny you should say that because the Swatch repair centers can and will replace your entire ETA movements to cut costs. It's faster and easier to just replace the dials and hands than it is to service the movement. You can have an operator do that all day instead of having to hire a watchmaker that's going to take longer and command higher wages.
Then again, that's just Swatch catching up to Richemont's practices.
tl:dr : never send your watches in for repair, find a reputable watchmaker instead. Bonus points if he is not directly affiliated with brands so he doesn't have to adhere to their standards and race to the bottom when it comes to repair and service practices.

I don't doubt you at all; it's gotten to that point where replacing movement will always be more cost-effective unless they are finished to a basic degree. There are enough low-end that use ETA that are in this category.

That's why (of course) I have a watchmaker who takes care of my watches. I've sent in the disposable, standard watches to Omega for servicing, but the vintage ones are only handled by my watchmaker. I will be in trouble when he dies. As I mentioned in the last thread, Anons who are new to the hobby will have trouble; Omega will not sell parts to independents unless they have an Omega Parts Account, so at least with that company, certain concerns that may crop up can only be solved 'in the system'. When Omega serviced my Seamasters, the results were in general acceptable, though I had to send the 2599.80 back (under warranty) in due to the chronograph issue. If it's not tritium, I'll have Omega service it directly. If it's tritium or/and older, my watchmaker is the only one who touches it.

But as I say, not everyone has this luxury. For most people, getting a vintage watch comes with a lot of learning and a lot of heartache, along with not knowing if your local watchmaker is screwing you for a buck.

That's also funny because Omega is one of the few brands that runs an actual vintage/heritage workshop.
They take absolutely forever and the prices are through the roof but I've seen some of their restauration works and what they can do is impressive.
Same with Longines but very few watches are sent there.
I've heard really good things about Blancpain's too but they take 6 months to just send you a repair quote since they only have 4 people working there.
Meanwhile Cartier has only recently opened its "Topic Workshops" in select repair platforms to do actual movement service in 2021 iirc.
The standards in that part of the industry are a joke and I'm not laughing.
Although I'm not complaining, it means that when clients arrive with vintage stuff, we all know the more reasonable option is to have me take care of it because brands will either do a botch job (Cartier), refuse it (some Swatch brands like Mido or Rado, and outside of Swatch but more disturbingly, IWC) or takea thousand days and as many bucks (Omega, JLC)

Don't know anything about Cartier, or Blancpain.

Ultimately, if I trust the watchmaker, I'd rather they do it. There's a direct line of communication of what I want worked on and what I want left-the-fuck-alone. Brands don't understand this.

It's even worse now that they straight-up won't give service accreditations to anyone who doesn't work in one of their stores. Not even a third-party AD, a store strictly operated by Rolex itself.

Cartier absolutely was though, they are the group's cash cow churning out watches with 15 euro worth of quartz movement sold for thousands. All it takes to get away with it is releasing some hyper-limited pieces assigned to VIP customers before conception even starts that have so little to do with the consumer brandn they might as well two different brands, and Cartier buys itself a clean reputation among watch enthusiasts.
They can offer the worst value, the absolute worst after-sale service, they still get away with it and sell shitloads by just sitting on a century worth of designs they've inherited.
It's a shame because they could do so much more.

>> No.18081858

>>18081853
Cartier is a better watchmaker than ever by every metric. They can now produce high complications and Geneva seal watches. They also still produce ultra exclusive designs that you will never see in person unless you are a VIP client. Vacheron does have a shit modern offering but compared to the bejeweled abominations Patek is churning out to the Arabs or black panther watches from AP it is just laughable to complain about high quality recreations.

They do and don't have watchmaking cred.
They do in that they can make some ridiculous high-end stuff, but they don't in that the part of Cartier that does it has basically nothing in common with the rest of the whole brand. It's like comparing Tissot and Breguet in terms of overlap.
> no real watchmaking division until the early 2000s.
That's just false. They had one, they've had one for decades too, but it went dormant after their effort to stay competitive in the 80s weren't enough. Like pretty much everyone else during the quartz crisis.

because the primary function of a watch nowadays is a show of wealth and sophistication rather than function. In terms of functional timetelling we went from
>mechanical
>quartz
>phone
the quartz era was really the crossing of the rubicon in that mechanical watches went from being a challenge of engineering to make your watch as compact as possible yet also as accurate as possible to an exercise in making them as compact as possible yet also as COMPLEX as possible since it's a status indicator to have a more complex, more expensive watch with more precious metals used.

tldr quartz watches are bad among watch people because watches are about fashion and SOVL rather than function and quartz watches dont have SOVL

They still have the 7200R in 35mm but I think it's rather boring and uninspired compared to the classic Calatrava. They're asking 32k euros for it kek.

Patek turned to shit the moment Thierry Stern was appointed CEO. All he did was discontinuing the classic Patek designs and replace them with oversized blingy sporty shitters.

The most hilarious thing he did was to release a minute repeater watch with a picture of his dad printed on the dial. It's an absolute mess, especially the whole area near the small second. It looks like they found a pic of Philippe Stern, vectorized it with Illustrator and didn't even bother cleaning it. Pathetic.

Anon, Swatch has been around for 41 years and their business model from the very start was to sell inexpensive, near-disposable, fun/casual watches.

You're all missing the point. The reason Swatch did this was to get a new generation into lusting after watches. No one lusts after a Royal Oak after owning a ghost Swatch....but if a kid is gifted a moonswatch, they'll eventually be curious about 'the real thing'. That's all Omega needed...something to boost younger folk into their product. It's brilliant, and has already resulted in higher sales of Speedmasters (including at my AD). Now that there is a plan to send people back to the moon again (and the fact that kids love that sense of adventure), this can't go wrong. Omega has literally set up another 4 decades of sales for their Speedmaster.

The Blancpain was intended to do the same thing, though I'm not sure how well it'll succeed (the FF is far more expensive than the Moonwatch). Regardless, there's no point critiquing the MoonSwatch on the merits of it as a piece of horology. That's not its purpose or intent.

It's the gateway drug. Like offering people testdrives of cars or food samples at Costco. I think they're fun watches, and if I had more 'fun' in my life, I'd probably have a few. They're very light and easy to wear, the proportions are similar (but not identical) to real Speedys, and the colours are, to be blunt, 'happy'. It's a fun toy, not serious horology.

One could argue that the money is better spent if someone wants a watch, but that's where the argument finds its endpoint. People don't buy the MoonSwatch to tell time accurately over decades of ownership. They are buying a wrist accessory that has name cache, a nice design, and enough variety to be collectable and go with one's outfits.

I like them; they make me smile, and they'll make Swatch group even richer.

The Omega 3861 is coaxial, the Lemania 1873 isn't. The Tag is the 1996 first re-edition with the white dial (they had black dial and other configs too), and the Lemania 1873 had Omega variants (861/863) with 18 jewels, longer power reserve, etc.

The two watches are about 25 years apart in tech and capability. The price for the Tag is fair if the piece is NOS.

I can assure you it's not. 40mm is Submariner size. Just picture your 40mm dress watch next to a Submariner. The dial opening on your watch would look gigantic next to the Sub. It's all proportions.

Honestly I've never understood why /wt/ seethe so much about small watches. It's like seething at vintage cars because they don't have air conditioning. Went to an omega store today and liked the speedmaster a lot more than i expected to. They wouldnt bargain with me at all though and it's in a part of town with way higher taxes so not sure if i should order from omega directly or just get it somewhere like chrono24.

There are no other stores that sell omega in my area that I could find.

So your just retarded my bad...
Why would an OFFICIAL omega store even bargain in the first place? They must have thought that you were the biggest poorfag on this planet

I have seen plenty of people that at least got tax knocked off from ADs. There are no longer any authorized dealers of omega in my area to try this at. Figured I had nothing to lose so might as well try while im there to see it on wrist. If I get one from chrono new I'm not sure where I could take it besides that one official store. At least I know I like it so even if I order from omegas site the taxes will be like $500 less to my house than the stores location.
