I wish I could get my hands on one of those, apparently the movement is a real frankenstein trainwreck (pic).

Of the first three automatic chrono movements I've only worked on the Seiko 6139. It's completely alien, nothing like any other movement, but because of that part-count is relatively low. As I said, the Heuer is monstrous. The Zenith looks like a masterpiece.

People misunderstand it. SD fanboys will contort into all kinds of mental gymnastics to categorize it as an automatic, but it isn't, it's a quartz movement.

Personally it feels like a gimmick. Seiko should have invested in tuning-fork tech. Citizen made license-built Accutron movements in their Hisonic line.

"Automatic" does not refer to what kind of escapement system the movement has, just whether it has automatic winding or not. There are both automatic and manual spring drive movements. Hell there are battery powered swiss lever movements.

>> No.17984438

>>17984426
I thought that most of its movement is mechanical, powered by a mainspring just like traditional watches. The difference is the escapement which has been replaced basically by that regulator synchro thingy. However, it's completely silent unlike a mechanical watch, and a quartz too actually.
But it is complete lie autonomous, no external power required.
I'd say it's 75:25 Mechanical/Quartz.
Have you ever worked on an SD movement?

That's not how we define movements though. They're categorized by their oscillating element. And a Spring Drive is a quartz, as the timekeeping element is a quartz crystal. An Accutron is a tuning-fork. A Hamilton Electric is pure electric balance watch. Later electrics are rather transistorized electronics, but the balance design is similar.

And that's not swiss lever either. Not even close.

"Automatic" doesn't mean swiss lever. If you wanna define a movement by what it uses as the escapement, then use the escapement, not whether. Just using "automatic" when what you really mean is "swiss lever" becomes confusing (apart from just incorrect) when manual wind watches are in question.

>> No.17984447

>>17984438
Nope, completely quartz, power source and whatever gimmicky running train it has is irrelevant. Could be steam powered, or a donkey on a treadmill and it wouldn't change the definition.

Independents don't really get to work on Spring Drives. Parts and schematics are restricted.

Automatic generally means automatic mechanicals, whether they're swiss lever or nowadays (thankfully) extinct pin-lever.

Spring Drive is kind of an autoquartz, but it's also different that it doesn't charge a shitty capacitor (also a warning to you all that Kinetics are dogshit), but winds a mainspring.

I guess I should have explained it more clearly, SD fanboys delude themselves that SD isn't a quartz watch but muh try-synchro regulator rising sun fuji mountain folded thousand times nippon mechanical. It's a quartz watch, the timekeeping element is quartz.

Aren't these "gimmicks" the reason we're attracted to these time keeping pieces in the first place, those unnecessary (in the context of current and slightly less current times) complications? Those little cogs, springs, jewels, crystals, batteries and whatever the fuck combination they're placed in? Le spring drive keeps better time than any mechanical, and a battery powered shitter you can acquire for basically chump change keeps better time than all them. And then there's the fucking phone, where timekeeping is basically an afterthought. It's not that functionality we're after when going after these pieces. They're the toys for grown-ups and I don't know about you, but I loved my fucking toys as a kid, and I sure as hell love the ones I got now. Automatics, manuals, quartz, spring drives, it's all fucking semantics. "Le spring drive is a quartz!" Why is spring drive being a quartz a bad thing? Is it because "quartz = cheap"? It's still a magnificent piece of engineering, same as those solar-powered, radio-synced digital watches, same as any regular or more outlandish mechanicals. I wanna get a spring drive. I think it's an interesting spin on what quartz watch is supposed to be, and you can be damn sure it's not reason that's driving me to get it. It's pure fucking autism and I love every smooth/skipped/lost/precise second of it.

Lots of Anons might have a Valjoux 775x variant, but everyone knows what these can do and what the pitfalls of them are. As for the 1861 and the 1120, these are everywhere and non-remarkable. Finally, no one has a 0100 or a Zenith 5011k here except me as far as I know...so there's not much to say about that either. But I'd be up for conversation if the subject was ideal.

Yes, but no one bought it. As for dive watches; the original was a normal watch cased in a water-proof outer shell, so it wasn't really a waterproof watch...it was just a watch that had a shell. I think that's why.

>>17984751
If you do, I'd recommend budgeting in the price of a full service either from Omega or from an independent as part of your budget. If you get the watch and you love it, then service it immediately so that you can enjoy it at 'full performance' for the longest time. If you're used to 41/42mm watches, then these will wear small for sure, but the colour combos are vibrant and are noticeable, especially if you colour-coordinate the straps. Right now, they are not in demand...good time to buy if you want them.

Looks great Fren. It'll always look too big when the shot is from that close. The modern way of measuring if it's 'too big' is if the lugs reach over the width of your wrist. If they do, it's 'too big'. If they don't, it's 'fine'. If you have the camera very close to the watch, the lugs will look larger, thus making the watch 'too big'. If you go far away, it looks smaller.

Then it might be the positioning. Could it be affecting your ulna directly? Is it pinching something if you bend your wrist with your palm facing the inside of your forearm or if you go side-to-side?

It took some time for me to get used to wearing the Lobster (my name for it, not the official name); it's very thiccc, very heavy, and the most ungainly watch in my collection. You know what solved it? Wearing it overnight while sleeping...for some reason, that got my body used to it. So, maybe try that. The only other thing I can think of is that the actual size (i.e. 41 vs. 36mm) might be another impediment. What are you trying to wear, Fren?

The powermatics can of course be serviced and regulated. There's some kind of misunderstanding online about this movement. They would replace a movement if it was beyond repair, like any sensible shop.

The escapement is made out of plastic for the cheap Powermatic 80. The watch can in fact be serviced but Tissot is not doing that, they will just put a new movement in or toss the watch if there is a problem within warranty. The watch is sold very often because of it's nice look and moderate finish. It's not a bad movement per se but the use of a polymer escapement leaves a sour taste for many people. The accuracy is also pretty good apparently.

My camera is shit, but yes it is. The way the indices shine in the light is blindingly gorgeous. The tip of the hour and minute hands have the same shiny polishing going on. It's a neat piece.

I first saw it in a movie called Up in the air, on George Clooney's wrist. It's how I got it. It's weird. Up until I got into watches, I never paid attention to what actors/their characters wore in movies or series. Now, I always find myself doing that Leo pointing meme whenever I spot a piece, especially ones that I know on their wrists.

There's annual calendar versions too. In hindsight, I was lucky to get mine when I did. They increased in price quite a bit since.

>The whole movement can be cheaply replaced if need be.
>A mechanical can be serviced forever.
>A Sprooong drive? Too expensive to simply replace

What are you even talking about; you don't have to replace entire spring drive movements.
Even the parts that make it "spring drive" can simply be replaced.

Most regular people don't replace batteries themselves either, and rightly so if they don't have pressure testing equipment, and they void their warranties if they don't have the receipt from a certified watchmaker.

Anyone here know Hanhart watches? An old Uni friend of my has one he got from his dad, who was a Luftwaffe (Cold War, not Nazi kek) pilot. It's not this model specifically, but this is the one that caught my eye from that manufacturer.
