Theres just something about a quartz analog watch that I find depressing, its just tick tock tick tock, the idea of spending money on one is depressing to me. Digital is different digital quartz is not depressing because it just is what it is. Quartz analogs are like a software version of a vinyl record player on your screen. There is something about a mechanical watch, it is alive, and it goes, tick tick tick tick tick, and it sweeps constantly, its alive and it makes me feel alive.

>pic related, obviously

There is something to be said for the repetition of perfection; it has its own charm, depth, and simplicity. I agree that it doesn't seem 'alive' to me, but that isn't what I look for. The remarkable nature of it lies in the representation of perfection. Something that is alive is by nature imperfect, and it is the flaws in that object that we find endearing (like the watch running slightly slower near the end of the barrel). Finally, beat frequency doesn't help me feel if a watch is alive or not; the quartz in the Lunar Pilot for instance still feels like a quartz pretending to be a mechanical. It's a great subject to debate...what makes a watch feel 'alive' to the wearer?

Also, I have an experience that I think is unique to me, but maybe you have felt it too. When a watch is unwound, it feels lighter than after I've wound it. In other words, it feels heavier once it's at a full wind. I know it shouldn't feel this way....yet it does.

>air king
picrel is a dress watch
>First released in 1945, the Rolex Air-King was part of a larger series of watches to honor the RAF pilots of the Battle of Britain. But long after the other models were phased out in the 1960’s – Air-Lion, Air-Giant, and Air-Tiger – the Air-King, beloved by pilots, lived on.
>It is small for a pilot’s watch of today’s standards. But when it was first released, that 34mm case was considered large (times change, go figure). What pilots, and collectors with style loved about the Air-King was that clean, simple face that was classical and easy to read on the fly. And even though it saw a myriad of dial changes throughout the years, the Rolex Air-King largely remained the same.

For decades, you could always count on those simple baton hands and smooth bezel

>What was it that Fp journe said that made everyone hate him?
Apparently he's quite a handful personality-wise; more interested in being a celebrity than making watches.
He's also got some shady business deals going with Govberg to inflate the value of his watches, so collectors and long-time customers are upset with that too.

Don't buy a watch unless you really want it and NO one wants an Omegay that bad. Every time you'll look at your wrist and remind yourself that it's not the watch you really want.

Better to just play the AD game (i.e. wait a bit) Truthfully, you'll not even wait that much anymore. This isn't 2020 anymore.

It does, if the camera is stable. You can see it on any YouTuber who has reviewed it in their videos, which are higher quality by far than mine. Those watches perform identically; they should, given that the hand placement is adjusted for every second by a technician to make sure they all line up.

I put my name on the list at the Rolex AD a month or so ago to treat myself for becoming a homeowner and all the shit I put up with last year, now after some rain storms I found out my roof is fucked and I'm probably going to have to put new roofing on. So if it ends up costing a lot of money - and even if it's not that much relatively - I'm probably going to have to tell them something came up and I can't afford it now and they're going to think I'm a fucking asshole.

These things happen Anon, but don't worry. Home ownership is far better long-term than watch ownership, even when compared with difficult-to-get Rolii. Home maintenance can seem like a never-ending money-sink. It is, no lie. But when you sell, it's likely you'll recoup the costs if you've maintained and reno-ed in a smart way. Better to have a roof over your head than a watch on the wrist.

Fwiw, my Omega AD told me a few weeks back that they had to return all of the deposits they took for the 321 Ed Whites; apparently they haven't gotten them in...ever. They had around 10-15 people on their list...so even if you're on a legit list (Rolex doesn't have legit lists, to be fair), there is no guarantee of anything. So, it could be worse.

Hope you get the repairs done right; research as best you can for longevity, as there are now lots of options for materials, how long they last, etc. Good luck.

I've replaced my 10 year old Victorinox Chrono classic with the Tissot Gentleman. It has been with me through a lot.

I like the dial on the Victorinox,
It has great lume, the Super-LumiNova is really thickly applied so it will glow all night after a day hiking on the wrist. I used the stopwatch feature more in the past. Victorinox do put out well-made "hiking" watches and I'll keep it for sport. Much of the other offerings from Victorinox look a bit tacky. But they have some nice watches that are often 50% cheaper in grey market.

The Gentleman is a step up in braclet quality for sure, nice finishing on the dial and indices. Much more comfortable and less nerdy looking.

Never really paid attention to the brand but I found a brand new limited edition GS with 9S movement (not spring drive), 25% off MSRP.
I know they're shitting out limited editions all the time so it doesn't mean much but is it going to more or less keep its value or not at all?

The BOR strap is very comfortable, ample amount of micro adjustments and the blue dial has a great tint and shimmer to it. The only con is a slightly noisy rotor but I expected it with the movement being a Miyota.

I was eyeing the GMT Aquascaphe for a while but realized that black dials just aren't interesting to me despite the nice bezel colours available.

So what's wrong with taking the bitter streets?

Instead of fully winding automatic watches and setting the time before I go out I recently started putting them on and wearing them for a few minutes before setting the time and then just wearing it for the rest of the day. With a watch that runs a little fast when fully wound I'm finding they keep nearly perfect time for days doing this. It's fucking great.

Which do you think is better? The gold is the quartz version as they didn't have the automatic in stock, so if I choose gold I'd get the Powermatic 80. I heard that this is the best gold PVD you can get for under a thousand eurobux so that sounds interesting to me as it may be the only reasonable way to add a gold watch to my collection.

>Yes, but it could take forever to find something.
That's very true, but a lot of people think that hunting down that perfect vintage piece is fun.

In order to not get scammed, you end up having to do a lot of research about various models, movements, variations over the years, like
>That's a re-dial. The version with the cal.541 didn't come with a dial until 1962
Then, when you finally get that piece, it represents more of an accomplishment because you know all the effort you made.

Really, the only risk is that you end up falling too far down the rabbit hole and end up being an insufferable virgin who can only talk about dial variations in Submariners or the movement evolution of the Speedmaster.

42/22
40,5/20

If I was going to get a manhattan it would definitely be the 37mm version. It looks like the kind of watch that would look and feel bigger on the wrist because of the way the case and bracelet integrate.

It's hard to gauge because almost all the pictures I can find of people wearing it are literal wristlets. Like, this is either a tiny wrist or a thick dick, right?
