I already had a rolex and sold it again. Not really worth it to pay the prices at the moment imo.
But I like the design, so I got with Tudor

Guide to posters

Major avatarfags
=============

>Poortadello/OmegaDrunk
Multi-reply specialist. Canadian. Gay. Only posts about his own watches. Very repetitive posts. Has several obscure Omegas only he cares about. Notorious for samefagging. Obsessed with BitterAnon.

>Whoretadello
Balding Greek living in Germany. Has a tendency of buying too large watches for his small wrist. Cleans cars for a living. Has a Tudor, Homos, and some Seikos. Life currently falling apart. Responds by getting more material things and falling in love with strippers. Excellent at ban evading.

>Citizen drunk/Finncel
25% Finnish, 50% Swedish, rest is a mystery. Lives in Finland. Works as a shelver in a grocery store. Alcoholic. Only owns one watch, but posts a lot, mostly about alcohol or coins. Possibly immortal. Tragic case of gyno.

>Mortadello
Very positive and friendly, but doesn't post anything of any consequence. Lawyer. Obese. Posts improving photos of amazing watches. Lies about his age. Does not take criticism well.

Semi-regular posters
================

>HamiltonDrunk
Posts a single picture per thread before getting drunk and passing out. Owns a Hamilton. Works in television and film.

>Nobully anon
Trans. Has rich parents who have bought them several VCs.

>Cockwatch
Has one F-91W, has posted it on his cock. Mostly posts the Casio with Soviet knick-knacks. Wants to be Emma Watson. Russian living in Latvia with mommy.

>ALS anon
Has an 1815 Up/Down. Stays under the radar, but occasionally pops his head up to flex and complain

>Weekdater anon
Owns a Seiko Weekdater, goes on dates weekly

>Hungarian anon
Is a watchmaker, complains about his customers

>Central Florida Anon
Looking for a wristlet to love

>Raketanon
Has 3 soviet Raketa watches and a Raketa table clock. Likes his big 0. Wanted to be listed and got listed.

>BitterAnon
Who is the mysterious BitterAnon? It could be anyone! It could even be you!

Why should anyone spend so much on a watch that only tells time? The only watch you should ever need to get is the Casio F-91W. This is for a multitude of reasons, firstly its very cheap, second is isn't bulky in the slightest, you can pull your jacket sleeve away to see the time easily with very little resistance. The final and best reason in my opinion is the edginess that comes with it, both al-Qaeda and ISIS used them. So GET A CASIO!!!!

It's especially useful for travel or international business but even if you're a working class slob that never leaves your home town it makes it really easy to reference the current 24 hour time if your timekeeping at work is done in 24 hour time. It also makes compass bezels totally pointless by mechanically keeping up with and referencing where north/south is.

Ok I'll bite. What's the point of having a 84h power reserve on a no day/date watch? Sure it's nice you leave it sitting over the weekend or something, but all you need is a 32 hour reserve if you're a functioning human being without dementia.
Also that power reserve meter has a far too large presence on the dial.

Chronograph honestly isn't that useful when you consider the trade offs. You rape your water resistance, which is hugely important for a daily wear watch, for a complication that you'll use maybe once a month? If that. And mostly for the novelty of it because you happened to remember you're wearing a chronograph and figure you may as well make sure it still works. And it adds huge expense to the retail and maintenance costs and adds bulk to the watch.

Especially with tougher ans currently mass produced movements like rolex movements, if you run a watch for 30 years without service until it finally breaks and needs a replacement component or two to get running again is the cost going to be that much different from paying $1000 or so every few years for regular service?

If we're talking about a 100 year old rare watch you can't overnight ship parts for on the cheap then, yeah, definitely get service if you're wearing it regularly. Other than that, if you don't care your mass produced watch doesn't run cosc anymore then what does it matter?

They're chinese amazon/ali-express poorfag-tier watches, but from what I've read they seem ok...

The seagull 1963 is based off the design of a chinese aviator watch that seems to have solid history. A chinese company bought the design from a swiss company. The ST19 mechanism is still regarded as decent today.

The point remains that there's still added risk to the movement and that you'll rarely use the complication but even if you want to there may be times that you literally can't. As opposed to other complications where you just look at the date and.... That's it, you know what the date is. So going back to the original discussion, I'm saying chronograph isn't as important as utilitarian and functional as even the simplest date complication. If we're being totally honest a simple dive time bezel is more than sufficient for tracking elapsed time 9 times out of 10, and any watch with any movement could have one.

On Friday evening, a bloody act of revenge took place in the Naples area.
It was Friday evening when 26-year-old Giuseppe Greco was threatened with a gun by two men at the wheel of his Smart car in Naples. Ciro Chirollo (†30) and Domenico Romano (†40) are the names of the two perpetrators who take Greco's Rolex during the robbery.

The robbers don't get far with the loot, however, because the robbed man doesn't want to let the incident rest. He chases the two men in his car as they speed away on their scooters. Between Villaricca and Marano, Greco rams the vehicles and brings the two robbers down. But that's not all: the car also runs over the men who have fallen to the ground. After the 26-year-old crashes his Smart car into a wall, he flees - leaving the lifeless bodies of Chirollo and Romano lying on the road.

Horrific sight
The eyewitnesses who later pass by the scene of the crime immediately alert the police and emergency services. When they arrive, they see a scene of horror: the bloody bodies of the two robbers with criminal records lie between the wreckage of the car

Avenger denies the crime
The search for the fleeing driver did not take long, as Greco contacted the police that same night. Not to turn himself in - but to report his Smart car and the Rolex as stolen.

However, the man who is now accused of premeditated murder denies all accusations. The investigation is ongoing. Greco is still at large for the time being.

Everything about what you said is incorrect. Even on a Speedy, the water resist is 50m; the rule is that you don't operate the crown or the buttons while submerged. You can submerge the watch just fine, just don't use the buttons or crown. There are, of course, chronographs that can be used at depth; I have one (pic related). I use chronographs multiple times daily, especially at work. The expense of maintenance comes with the territory though, so complaining about it is like complaining about changing the oil in your car; if you can't afford the maintenance, you can't afford the watch. Adding bulk? Depends on the movement; poorer movements will be thicker in general, and one of the reasons why the Daytona is so beloved is that it's quite thin compared to other automatic chronographs of its price range.

>>17964303
Exactly.

>>17964304
I did the lot between 2020 - 2022 or so. The vintage pieces tend to be serviced more often than the normal ones. The expense depended upon who did it and what was required. I have an independent who takes care of my vintages, and his prices are reasonable and a fraction of the cost of AD, but other ones I sent to Omega or Zenith and they have their prices listed on their websites.

They have a lot of awesome stuff. The watch I posted in my previous post >>17964496 was apparently the first one they released that could be used at depth (i.e. 300m below). That's why I love it so much; just a bullet-proof watch that can do anything anytime. Obviously the modern iterations can still do that.

>>17964310
If I only wear 1 watch, it's on the right wrist, so the pushers never come close to water. Good for the vintage ones.

>>17964319
In person they're awesome. There's a Speedy moonphase with an aventurine dial...man, it's like the sky.

>>17964323
I get my vintage ones serviced 'at the correct intervals', but the modern ETA-based ones I get serviced at larger intervals. It really depends on the individual watch, how much you wear it, etc.

>>17964356
Chinese watches fail due to a variety of reasons: movement design, and quality control. ALL of them are like this. The Seagull 1963, has a movement made from the same tooling as the original Venus movement from back in the day, but modifications have been made by Seagull for the modern day. So, the movement could be argued to be not as great as the original. Then you stack on top of this some awful quality control (i.e. fingerprints, dust, debris, bad lubrication or none at all, etc.), and you get the lottery bag that is every chinese watch ever made. When I got my Seagull, the movement was 'not too bad' according to my watchmaker in terms of cleanliness, and he had to make some adjustments to the chronograph, but once he did, the thing worked within my tolerances. It was a lovely place-holder for a Speedmaster at that time of my life, and the chronograph is crisp to operate and held +0.5 seconds per day.

If you get a chinese watch, have a trusty watchmaker at hand so he can clean it and pull it into the best possible performance that the watch is capable of.

I think we live in a remarkable time where we have the largest possible variety to choose from and many of them are reasonably priced for what they can do. You could quite literally find any design that speaks to you and buy it, when back in the day you were far more limited by what stores were in your town and what price you could afford. Quality control is the issue, as always though, so my thoughts always gravitate to the same thing: do you have a watchmaker who can inspect it when it arrives, and can service it when it needs a service and/or parts? If so, then enjoy!

It's time I graduate from my $60 macy's watch to a big boy watch (budget $1200).

I've been thinking about getting a railway watch because Im one of those literal autists who cum over trains. I think the Citizen Homer is a particularly beautiful watch, and it was for Japanese railways (I'm also an anime autist).

The thing I'm worried about is that vintage watches are particularly a bitch to maintain, and servicing it might be an additional few hundred bucks.

Thoughts?
PS My runner up for a railway watch is for Ball since they're literally the OG American railway watch. Apparently they actually make quality watches so I'm also considering that even though their design is less appealing.

Doesn't seem to look like it. The only ""luxury brand"" I know is the Omega Railmaster which can tolerate exposure to electric fields. It's like a diver watch for electricians. I don't even think conductors *could* use this watch. The government set a bunch of standards for the dial, which this watch doesn't seem to meet.

Historically, railroad conductors were expected to buy their own watches so railroad watches are relatively very affordable.

You misunderstand, Fren. You can get designs today that you couldn't get back then without spending lots of money. Look at all the 'homages' to obscure watches from the 70s and 80s that now exist at reasonable prices. That's great if you just like the design and don't care about the movement or brand.

>>17964522
The only one I have to be careful of is the 321, because the pushers are attached to the case by hammering them in rather than screwing them in (that was later altered for the 145.012s with the taller pushers). If you have a 105.012 like mine that is all original, you can't replace these pushers, nor can you disassemble them, so you are left with pushers where you'll have no idea what state the gaskets are in. I have to be 'careful' with that watch, but all the other ones are fine.

>>17964523
Ackshually, /wt/ thrives with knowledgeable and experienced posters who own these watches. We have insights that a non-owner may not have yet. For instance, did you know that the winding experience on an 1861 is inferior to an old 321 but has been improved with the new 3861?

It"s more about the fact that these watches are gender neutral.
Does it look ok for a man's daily dress watch, tyhat's the question.

/wt/ is being destroyed by the worst elements of this general. it’s a cycle that happens routinely a few times a year.

we’re nowhere near hitting rock bottom yet, so just ignore the general for a few months and it’ll come back to normal on its own.

>Why the fuck do they not make bracelets for their precious metal watches?
Then they would be too expensive. A full-gold or even full-silver watch would be priced near what Rolexes would cost.
