Why does no one sell non-merino wool underwear?

>> No.17959916

>>17959898
genuinely: why would you want wool underwear in general? underwear has to be washed frequently. even though wool is antibacterial, the amount of ass/ball sweat picked up by a pair of boxer briefs needs to be cleaned eventually. and then you have to wash it without felting it, which is going to be increasingly difficult for more delicate & expensive wools than merino. and if you get cheaper then there's the question of an itchy natural fiber that many people are mildly allergic to all up in your dick & asscrack area. just feels like a bad idea all around.

Merino underwear (not 100%, with a few % nylon for durability) is great.
Moisture wicking. Doesn't smell. Comfortable.

If I put manmade materials on my skin (especially in areas I tend to sweat) I reek

>> No.17959934

>>17959931
i mean i can see why merino would work out but i just can't imagine something like cashmere or shetland having the same or better durability + comfort level + ease of washing all at once for this specific function

>> No.17959946

>>17959898
Merino is the best material for under layers because its breathable and moisture-wicking. And it can be woven into a soft, stretchy, non-itchy fabric. Maybe they theoretically could weave other varieties of wool into a jersey knit, but merino is just the best choice.

>> No.17960079

>>17959916
Lightweight merino wool is amazing. I live in southeast Texas and do labor, the ones I have are great, ball sweat is kept to a minimum and my balls were actually cool after getting out of the sun.

because merino wool is a combination of cheap, not coarse, and superwash treated so you can machine wash it.
>>17959916
don't under estimate the anti microbial properties. thousands of people a year do 3000 mile thru hikes across america in a single pair of wool underwear they're lucky if they get to wash once along the way.
>>17960138
icebreaker and brynje are the best for wool baselayers IME. depending if you want knit or woven mesh. icebreaker for underwear. worth the price premium in how long they last over other brands i've tried.

most long distance hikers only bring the bare essentials, maybe 1 luxury and leave everything unnecessary behind. a few pounds of clothes is a lot of weight when we're talking about people who shave the handles down on their toothbrushes to save weight.
the idea is to spend more time on the trail and less at camp. your gear doesn't do anything but weigh you down and slow you down until you've set camp up. bringing less shit trades off having a shittier camping experience for having a better hiking experience, up to double the miles per day, less injuries etc. more miles per day = more allowance for unforseen delays = higher chance of completion.
you still see boomers with 30+lb packs but you rarely see anyone younger packing like that on hikes over 300 miles.
heres a dude doing the entire pct with a 20 liter backpack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkzggN8OBlE

you will never find merino underwear below about $30 because that's what they cost to make. even the taobao shops want around $22 a pair. your best bet is to buy merino underwear in bulk when they go on sale at outdoors retailers around the end of summer. you can get $15-20 which is the absolute lowest i've ever seen.
you get what you pay for in lifespan, its really more worth it to just buy icebreaker/brynje.

Yes faggot
Pure merino woll underwear would fall apart after a few weeks of heavy use. Properly made merino clothing where they wrap the meriko around a nynon inner fibre for strength and stability is fine and desirable. Once it gets over about 20% nylon then you know it's just cheap filler. Obviously some of the shit that smartwool makes that's only 20% wool is trash but 83% wool is fine
