Semi-based. It's from the 80s/90s so it will be very small compared to modern sizing. It wasn't a big watch even back then. I think it's like 33mm.
It's also from when VC just used JLC movements, so it's not in-house, but there were no in-house VCs at all until the mid-2000s when they started making their own movements.

It definitely looks like a watch from the 90s.

There are 2 Cartier
>high horology stuff that is even more exclusive than Patek, done by actual watchmakers mostly by hands
This branch was formerly known as Cartier Paris Collection Privée, which is the original Cartier.
>industrial-made watches with third party movements (or "in house" versions of ETA movements)
This branch is pretty much a newer version of "Cartier Must", a brand that sold cheap gold plated shitters in the 70s to the plebs.

You may not like it, but the current Santos belongs to the later. I'm not saying it's a bad watch, but it's not a real Cartier.

How do you even wear watch like this without it stealing away all attention? I went to a barber the other day and he had Rolex. Nice watch but kind of too on the nose. You could go out in your pajamas wearing Rolex and it would leave same effect because watch sort of lives it's own and more interesting than you are. Is this right approach to wearing watches? Just going for the most impressive piece you can buy? Personally I feel like watches work better when they just mold into your entire appearance without causing too much distraction.

>How do you even wear watch like this without it stealing away all attention?

Easy. Because basically no one knows what it is. Normal people know Rolex, Cartier (though even then mostly as a jeweler), and Apple. Casio and Seiko are the same brand to most people. Even many watch fans don't know ALS.

To them, it's just a gold watch with an odd-looking face. If he's dressed nice, they'll assume it's a nice watch. If he's dressed like a slob, they'll assume it's gold-tone.

A basic service is about 600 USD from Rolex Service. With the parts that would need to be replaced, count on spending another 600 USD or so. It should not cost more than 1500 USD to get it looking new again.

No, Rolex doesn't do that. You give it to them, and they will bring it back to 100% factory specs. If they can't do that for one reason or another, like parts don't exist anymore, they'll give you the watch back. They don't take special requests.

In your case, a 78 DJ is extremely common, so they'll have plenty of parts.

I can only speak to my personal experience, servicing two Rolexes (one new, one from the 80s) and one Tudor. RSC is fine. The only problem I ever had was with the Tudor and that's because it took four months. (It was during the coof. That was their excuse.)

In terms of the work, I have never had any complaints. They're a lot more reasonably priced and work faster than most other brands' service. Servicing an Omega was more expensive. Servicing a JLC was both more expensive and took much longer.

Do they actually have parts and tools accounts?

I know of one in my area. (Large city in Northeast US.) There's plenty of watchmakers around and any of them can work on a Rolex, but unless they actually have those accounts, they'll replace your Rolex parts with generic equivalents.

I recently discovered the Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba (their naming system is so retarded btw) and really like the look of it. Seems pretty nice, dial is fairly unique/not a blatant rip off of more expensive dive watches, and good size at 40mm (cheap dive watches are always like 43mm). Decent price too. However I see it gets lots of hate in various places, why is that? I’m assuming it’s a regular Hamilton used movement which is pretty nice, price is okay, so why all the hate? Lots of YouTubers making reviews saying this is the most hated watch or whatever. Am I missing something?
