>JLC
It always cracks me up when people associate JLC to monarchy, nobility, elegance, class or whatever.

JLC is the epitome of a "mid luxury" brand, marketed towards middle managers who can't afford a Patek or a Cartier Collection Privée. If it wasn't for the unexpected revival of the Reverso in the 80s, that brand would have had the same fate as Universal Geneve. Or maybe Longines.

They even made a watch to time your parking space. You can't be more "RTW suit, Audi A6, suburban house, middle manager" than that lmao

They've been on a steady decline starting from the early 2010s to now. The SKX special models didn't do well. GS has to give watches away to 'influencers.' And their boomer customers are dying off.

Apple approached them over a decade ago to go into Smartwatches. The CEO at the time laughed it off as them being merely toys. Now the Apple Watch sales account for 20 billion in 2022 while Seiko's entire business accounted for less than 900 million. A 200 million decrease since 2020.

TL;DR - Seiko is losing around 15-20% a year world wide. US market only now account for 5% of total sales. Europe 7% and Asia(not-JP) 4%, Japan is still holding strong. They need to do 'something.'

HIs watch collection is pretty interesting TBQH.

He owns BOTH the Seiko and Rolex American Psycho watch. The Seiko is worn as a beater and can be seen with him when he's filling up. He owns a few fancy watches that was given to him from the production studio from a Day Date from American Hustle, which he wore again for the movie Vice. A thought just occurred to me on the Explorer 2. The proposed intended use of the watch is for subterranean exploration, right? So what in the point of lume on a watch in an application where you're going to be underground for extended periods of time making it difficult to impossible for the lume to charge, but even if it did you would necessarily need to have headlamps and all kinds of light sources with you anyway? The lume doesn't do anything to help you.

Let me get this straight. Please be patient, I have autism: an automatic watch you have to wear every day or the spring runs down and it stops. It must then be rewound. It loses several seconds a day best case. It must be serviced which is more expensive the more premium the watch is.

-not all models have superreps. the fakes here are almost all top-tier (except daydate, which is yet to have a great rep)
-i like classic designs. their iconic status proves their success as a product. they also happen to be versatile for similar reasons. i don't need my watch to express my individuality.
-i happen to have over a dozen 'unique' gen watches. picrel is one. their cumilative value easily exceeds 50k. i am in the process of liquidating them as the 6 watches I chose above meet all my needs and then some.
i hope you reach peace with yourself. happy discuss further if you keep things civil.

Quartz movements have a life expectancy of about 10 years, probably less due to an effective ban on lead soldering. Newer quartz movements are not designed to be repairable. You can reasonably expect to be able to get NOS movements/parts through non-official channels for another 10 years or so. It won't serve you for a lifetime. It will have very limited resale value. It won't become a heirloom. It's disposable.
Even entry-level swiss mechanical movement (other than Powermatics) are repairable and should be functional for 150+ years.

Depends on the model.
Manufacturers are usually required by law to provide functional parts for 10 years after discontinuing a model. With simpler analog quartz watches the official service center will swap in a newer generation movement with fitting measurements from the same manufacturer if available. Often without consulting the customer. If no comparable movement is available they'll refuse servicing the watch.
Good independent watchmakers will look at all available options and consult the customer.

Mechanical movements are an outdated tech that peaked in the 60s. The only reason to own a mechanical watch is for that retro feeling, which is fine considering how modern tech sucks. Therefore, every mechanical watches should be vintage inspired. In fact, mechanical watches that try to look modern and futuristic are cringe.

Affordable is a good thing. I'm sure you own some affordable goods too anon. In fact, I'm pretty sure most of the things you own could be qualified as "affordable".

For $850 you either get a Seiko or a "microshitter". I think microshitters are more fun and more interesting, and overall a better choice.

That's not how trademarks work. You usually get it for a specific product. You can't call your watch Air-King because Rolex would claim that a consumer would think they are buying a Rolex product. But you can name something unrelated the same thing. You can't come out with a phone and call it Apple but you can call thread brand Apple.

Hey repanon, can you listen to the ticking on your Sub? There should two sounds coming from it, the ticking and another sound. Something that goes along with the ticking, its best describe as either a dinging sound or hammering sound. I am curious on what a rep sounds like.

just want something that looks a bit vintage, although even that's not really necessary. Just suggest me a good watch, especially if it's from the "enthusiast" brands and is under <$50

Which is the best vintage KS model? I'm torn between the 45 and 56, and then whether to get no date, date, or day date. Then there's the original bracelet to find too. Goddamn.

I better not get into vintage GS next.

it sounds quite normal. the vsf sub is considered one the best in the game. it has a clone movement. people exchange parts with oem parts, creating frankenwatches.
miyota movements in the calatrava and breguet were noisy with their rotors in the beginning. now it only happens occasionally. these two are also very scratchy during setting. a thorough cleaning may solve that, but not sure if it is worth it. i will probably wait until there are some timekeeping issues.
