Glad you asked, Fren. Here on /wt/, there are watch enthusiasts who have recognizable collections; these might be focusing on specific aspects of horology, or perhaps a specific brand, or even just a collection of valuable and/or unusual pieces. When any of these owners post a pic of their watch, they might be recognized by other anons who frequent this board, and internal pleasantries may be traded. A very kind Fren decided to make this picture of me, and it is quite accurate.

In addition to this, there are Anons here who express their concern and/or disapproval of the watches, the collectors of said pieces, and/or the general issue of wealth as it pertains to this subject. This has resulted in a 'Punch and Judy' scenario on this board which is as predicable as an unloved season.

What are you wearing today, Fren?

It's a user who accompanies each post with an image from a recognizable set to circumvent anonymity on an anonymous imageboard without tripfagging (which would make them easily filtered)

Groups of related avatarfags usually participate in circlejerk threads, threads where they are the major posters, and post pictures related to the overall theme of their avatars, e.g., furry circlejerks include furry porn and comics; MLP circlejerks include screenshots of the show, "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic".

Strictly speaking, it's against the rules and is a bannable offense, but the mods/jannies don't care.

Guide to posters

Major avatarfags
=============

>Poortadello/OmegaDrunk
Multi-reply specialist. Canadian. Gay. Only posts about his own watches. Very repetitive posts. Has several obscure Omegas only he cares about. Notorious for samefagging. Obsessed with BitterAnon.

>Whoretadello
Greek living in Germany. Cleans cars for a living. Has a Tudor, Homos, and some Seikos. Life currently falling apart. Responds by getting more material things and falling in love with strippers. Excellent at ban evading.

>Citizen drunk/Finncel
Finnish. Alcoholic. Only owns one watch but posts a lot, mostly about alcohol or coins. Possibly immortal. Tragic case of gyno.

>Mortadello
Very positive, friendly but doesn't post anything of any consequence. Lawyer. Obese. Posts improving photos of amazing watches. Lies about his age. Does not take criticism well.

Semi-regular posters
================

>HamiltonDrunk
Posts a single picture per thread before getting drunk and passing out. Owns a Hamilton. Works in television and film.

>Nobully anon
Trans. Has rich parents who have bought them several VCs.

>Cockwatch
Has one F-91W, has posted it on his cock. Mostly posts the Casio with Soviet knick-knacks. Russian living in Latvia with mommy.

>ALS anon
Has an 1815 Up/Down. Stays under the radar but occasionally pops his head up to flex and complain

>Weekdater anon
Owns a Seiko Weekdater, goes on dates weekly

>Hungarian anon
Is a watchmaker, complains about his customers

>Central Florida Anon
Looking for a wristlet to love

>Raketanon
Has 3 soviet Raketa watches and a Raketa table clock. Likes his big 0. Wanted to be listed and got listed.

>BitterAnon
Who is the mysterious BitterAnon? It could be anyone! It could even be you!

That's exactly it, though.

Watches are luxuries. There is no watch journey, there is no progression you have to go through. You don't have to buy a bunch of shitty Seikos before you're allowed to buy an Omega, then a Rolex, then a Patek, etc.

Pick the watch you really want and start saving for it. If you have to save for something else as well, like a car or a house, then you should not be saving for a luxury watch yet.
Spending money on luxuries while living in the hood is ghetto behavior.

this guy >>17930505 is absolute right, I get the urge to dive into something like this, but its just not as accessible like trading cards. Buy what you like, not what you're "supposed to like", but be aware of quality. Save of money, read books, learn history and movements rather than "TEN WATCHES TO GET RIGHT NOW IN THIS PRICE POINT IF YOU ARE AN ENTHUSIAST" videos. A fun place to start is going to you're local flea market and try to find hidden gyms, chances are you wont but it will be fun and a good way to practice your 'eye' for watches, brand recognition, and its rather fun. You'll get a taste for what you want without having to blow 5 grand on a bunch of medium tier watches. Also my advice would really be to buy a watch mostly for an occasion or celebration, it really does mean a lot more over time "Got this watch for my wedding" etc and your regret will be way less. House, car, 401k, teeth first always though my dude.

It's fine. It's meant to be a one-watch collection. Dressy but not so dressy you can't wear it with a t-shirt. Sporty but not so sporty you can't wear it with a suit. Reasonably sized, good water resistance, good power reserve.

The 41mm version has a neat movement that has a jumping hour, making it a pretty handy travel watch too.

They can be had for pretty reasonable prices on the second hand market as well.

The old one did, for sure. The generation with the ETA 2983 in it was a great watch and was, in fact, the watch that spurred Rolex to upgrade the Submariner which, by the late 1990s/early 2000s, was feeling pretty obsolete.

Not HAQ, but it does have a proper, serviceable movement, based on a mechanical one, with a metal mainplate. Mine is running about 15s slow a month, but it does have a screw you can turn to adjust it, i just don't have a screwdriver that's thin enough to do it myself so i'll have to take it to a watchmaker to do it for me. Hits almost all of the markers without any backlash, and is in great condition.

It does make sense because it's a vintage quartz, made just 9 years after the first quartz watch hit the market, and it has a proper, sturdy jeweled movement, not some cheap plastic thing they put in modern quartz watches. Yes it does. Service is more than more than just cleaning the movement. The gaskets also need to be checked and replaced to ensure water resistance.

However, those old quartz movements were made before people developed ways to make them extremely cheap. They are designed similarly to mechanical movements. They can (and should) be serviced and regulated.

That's true, but with vintage there's not always a true 1:1 comparison.

In the case of >>17930604, for example, he got that for 50 Euros, but good examples usually cost a bit more, closer to 200 Euros. A 100 Euro service is more than the cost of the watch, but less than what the watch is worth.

No suggestions of a watch, but what I would suggest is to alter your strategy. You said you have a 'grail' that you are working up to, so that assumes you have one in mind already. Wisest move with the least waste is to simply save for the grail and get it as soon as you can. Every watch you get before your grail pushes your grail further down the road. One thing to consider if you haven't already is servicing costs; I don't know if you've serviced any of your watches yet, but once you get into life-time ownership, then you do have to service them at least every 10 years or sooner so they keep running well, so factor that into the cost as well. That's why I'd stress on simply saving for your grail and getting it sooner; then you can enjoy it longer, and focus only on servicing that one piece.

Thrift stores, in this day and age, likely won't have Omegas for any sort of deal, but it all depends on where the store is located and how good their internet access is. Just remember that a watch is only as good as the condition of its movement, so even if it seems like a deal, you might have to take it to a watchmaker to service the movement before it runs well. The added cost is something you need to factor in. Sometimes replacement parts to an old movement are no longer manufactured or available, and this makes an old watch even more problematic.

I am. For daily wear.
It has a more traditional dial, but without the fully polished round case that most watches with traditional dials have.
I really liked pic related as well, especially the dial color/texture and the hands.
But the case is simply too small and dainty for my frame.

After all these years of being interested in watches, Longines was probably one of the absolute last brands I ever thought I'd want; yet here we are with two Longines in my top 5 for daily wear, including the top rank. lmao

I like having a date window, it's handy to know the date at a quick glance of the wrist. I'd go for datejust instead but I don't like the cyclops magnifier on them. I also like how Omega is a bit more subtle than Rolex, everyone knows Rolex is an expensive watch where an Omega flies a bit more under the radar while still being a nice watch

I am a bit disappointed about Ueno. There isn't much at all if you're not looking for rolex or omegas. There are tons of Rolexes yeah, but credor is even rarer than I thought. Of course I didn't see everything in those 2 hours.
We went to a big store, 6 floors and 4 interconnected building. I forgot the name, mitsuzu--- , something. I will find the name tomorrow. It's very famous apparently. On the 5th floor they had Grand Seikos and a tiny section of credors. The guy was very happy that I showed him my 20 year old credor. He even said that it's nostalgic. He told us, you can only find Credor in Ginza, at flagship boutiques.
I really thought that I would find some vintage stuff much more easily.
Rolexes start from 1.8 million and go up to 25 million.
I didn't look much into them. Maybe tomorrow.

I impulsively bid on an auction for this watch and won it. I have 2 questions.
1- where the fuck can I find information on it? Movement? Crystal? A watch shop was selling it and they guarantee authenticity, but that serial number (H704450) leads me to slightly different watches. I can’t find anything with a magnified date window and a 40mm diameter

I got mine used too and the dude put an aftermarket bracelet on it, it fits okay but needs thinner springs because they have to bend a tiny bit. Maybe there’s a better one. I’ve seen people put strapcode bracelets on them. If it’s 40mm maybe Hamilton makes one?

Glad you like it. It’s my first non quartz watch. Was considering waiting till I could get something higher end but I got this for 290€ including a discount from a coupon so fuck it.
I came across some 38mm ones as well, but they didn’t have magnified dates either. Wondering if this one is a frankenstein or just a slightly more obscure version. Do you have any idea how often Hamilton changed movements on their Khakis? If it’s a 25 jewel, does it have to be their version of the ETA 2824/2 or could it be something shittier?

Not sure if this dude maybe measured it wrong? I don’t see any 40mm khaki fields online but maybe they used to be made, maybe he’s not measuring including the crown because khakis are either 38 or 42. Idk about the date window magnifier tho, I don’t see any Hamilton sold with that online. Maybe keep searching, try Reddit, or try searching in German as maybe this was only in Europe? Not sure if it’s a Frankenstein, probably not as it’s from a watch shop and not Delhi but you never know. Looks legit

Yep, it’s that one. Same seller, same watch. They had an auction for it that ended yesterday. I also found the same watch (again from the same seller) on Chrono24 and they seem to have good reviews there as well.
Guess I’ll measure it when it arrives. As long as it has that ETA movement and a sapphire crystal I’m fine with it for what I paid to be fair. Just got kind of worried when I couldn’t find anything identical online.

>the details are all smudged
That's all noise from AI and high ISO. Phones take great photos by analyzing the scene and then using the ideal setting to reduce motion and use computational photography to make it "pretty". It works for making hags look pretty on instagram but it comes at the cost of detail and resolution. All you have to do is use more light, ancor the phone, and turn of all the post processing. That will allow you to reach get the most out of the tiny sensor that phones use which is still BTFO by anything with a larger sensor.

>ancor the phone
This is the most important imo. When i got one of my favorite watches i set about taking 'good' photos of it and i quickly realized that my hands weren't nearly steady enough for it. I have changed phones since then and the ones i had after sucked at taking macros, they just can't focus nearly as close as my old phone could (Samsung S5 mini) so most of the newer photos suck.

>> No.17931321

>>17931314
The blur from shaking your hands gets compensated automatically by higher ISO and AI which are the enemy of resolution. Every camera has a minimum focus distance that is usally listed. it might be a bit harder to find for phones but it should be out there. Some phones have macro lenses but unless they use the main camera you have to really do some careful comparisons to see if the zoom is worth giving up the better sensor.
