Flashlights; the astronauts relied on them. No need for the tachymetre to be lumed, as you're not timing distance to calculate speed. Lumed tachymetre bezels, while looking awesome, are almost illegible in the dark after the first 2 minutes.

>>17851975
Agreed, but even in those cases, why wear a watch at all? Gloves would have to cover them, or the wrist straps on the gloves would get in the way of the watch. Better to use a pocket watch in those scenarios anyway.

Cheers Anon.

As a general comment; do you Anons know that the 0100 has been fitted to new models that cost about half of what the original cost? It's the Citizen AQ6100 range, part of 'The Citizen' range.

https://www.chrono24.com/citizen/aq6100-56a0100-t026460------744294--id28236545.htm

39mm, like mine, but different dial colours available. It's in the same price range as a Tudor now. I don't think they're in Titanium (which probably accounts for the lower price too), but they're still well designed.

It's important to know this though. There are far more options available today than there used to be, and it's easy to get something because it is similar to what we actually want but might not be able to afford. The most important thing is to recognize when this is the case, as this will prevent a wastage of money.

GP is decent in person, but like GO, it's difficult to not see it as a cope for something else (like GO being a cope for ALS).

The great thing is that none of my watches are a cope for anything. They're just the best of what they can be.

Thanks Fren; I did take a photography class all those decades ago, but we were still using film and developing it ourselves. Today you can do astonishing things in post-production, but it's a very deep well that requires lots of learning, and I don't have the time to learn that stuff well.

Good luck with the shots though. This one was a very old shot, but I was always happy with it. It's very generic, but it captures most directly the normal experience I had when looking at this watch on my wrist.

it makes sense when you look at the large range of g shocks and their different features, you can look at the face of the watch and know all of its functions without much research, if you look at the master of g line you'll see, they have a button there most of the time but it'll serve a different purpose depending on the watch. In terms of just having it and using it, yeah, it's a little unnecessary but it looks pretty cool imo

Like bro we get it, some guy fucked your wife and she left you for him but do you really have to stalk and harass the guy years after on some obscure hobbyist forums and milanese leather workers bulletin boards?
Accept your loss and move on, shit happens. Your wife was a whore and accept it, the guy actually did you a service.

My daily mechs keep a minute within a month. All you need is a trusty watchmaker to pull them into the range, knowing your wearing habits. My best wristwatch is actually my 321, even though it's not COSC cert or anything like that. It's just built well, and my watchmaker knows his shit.

For a mechanical watch to be reliable, all you need is to wear it regularly, store it consistently, and have a watchmaker pull it into spec for you. The problem can be that brands will void the warranty if they do a service and you have your personal watchmaker open up the watch after. So, the three I had serviced by Omega haven't been opened to adjust, hence they have varying degrees of accuracy compared with the ones I don't send to them. Win/lose.

>>17852578
You could save for a decade or more and get one when they're 'vintage'. These things go in cycles, and you'd be surprised at what is hot now and what won't be 15 years from now. Think about all of the collectors today who will grow old and sell their collections...who is going to buy?

>...a lot to ask from the user?
No. It's because the modern expectation of what a mechanical watch can and can't do is unrealistic due to all the other things that have modern technology. It's like comparing a car from 1970 with one today; the one from 1970 could be fixed by anyone with an instruction manual, tools, and parts. But a modern car would require computerized diagnostics and all the other bullshit. Granted, the modern car will perform far better than the older one in every measurable way...but if we applied the expectations of what we're used to today with what was possible back then, we'd be just as annoyed.
The older generation bought a watch, had a watchmaker they would take it to regularly for servicing if it started running slow, and that's about it. Older watchmakers took into account things like which wrist the owner wears the watch on, how they store it overnight, etc. Good watchmakers still do, of course, but if you send a watch to Omega, they don't ask for that information nor do they really care. They're trying to get as many watches serviced as quickly as possible, which leads to mistakes or things not being absolutely perfect. That's why I always advocate for finding a good watchmaker that you can talk to 1:1. A good watch has potential to be a nearly perfect one, so if you have a watch with one of those ETA or Valjoux movements, it's possible to pull it into really great specs. If the watch has a movement that is designed badly or has poor components, then it's luck of the draw.
>who's serving who? The user or the watches?
It's a tool; if you want it to function well, you have to maintain it and run it according to its limits. Like adding oil periodically to your engine.
>...beauty in a watch that needs fucking nothing

What about the modern expectation what A WATCH can do? My entire point was about the mechanicals being a lot less practical than the Quartz watches.
> It's like comparing a car from 1970 with one today;
That's why most people don't buy cars from the 70s. And those who do keep it in a garage for a special occasion, take them out to the track once a year and put them back under glass.

If i had several grand to blow on something i'm not gonna use I actually would enjoy having a Speedy displayed under glass, maybe i'd even wear it for a party occasionally but for the daily use Quartz wins hard. I'm no longer considering mechanicals as something i'd buy for my everyday convenience.

Yes, it did, but it is on the expensive side.

The movement is the Zenith 5011k, which was considered to be the most accurate movement of its type to be manufactured before the quartz crisis. Zenith used them in marine chronometers, a series of pocket watches, and also sold the movements to Ulysse Nardin as well to be used for marine chronometers. It has a huge balance, as large as the mainspring barrel, and there are multiple points of adjustment one can make to get it to precise tolerances. You can still find them on Chrono24 once in a while; there were other versions in the pocket watches (i.e. arabic instead of roman numerals, moonphase vs. no moonphase), but in the end I think mine is the best of the options. It's larger than a standard pocket watch, and quite heavy. Perfect with a 3-piece suit, if you ever wear those (I do regularly).

>>17852653
Then your point is correct; mechanicals are less practical than quartz watches. But people don't buy watches for practicality anymore; you can use a phone for that. It might be off by a second or two, but it's not egregious.

People buy mechanical watches for the emotions that are tied up with the item or the idea of rocking one. It's about beauty, aesthetics, feel, sound, and all the other things that come along with the sense of having one.

People buy vintage cars for the same reason.

>>17852652

>But people don't buy watches for practicality anymore;

Well I do. And the fact Casio or Citizen even exist as a company today means somebody else does too.

A wristwatch is no longer essential, but it's really convenient. Frees your hand from having to hold a phone the entire time and being ablo to check the time any time without fumbling with a phone helps me be more efficient with my time, sounds suilly but that makes the difference between having the time for breakfast before work or going hungry.

>why not a smartwatch then
I don't think that the concept of a smart watch is inherently vile and sinful, the technology just isn't ready yet. They require charging every day and an awkward shake to wake up the screen. If in 20 years a smart watch can run off solar power i'm buying it but right now Quartz wins.

It all comes down to the convenience of only having to look at my wrist, no maintenance, no attention, no setting time, not a fucking worry in my life. The watch serves me, not the other way around. Oh and it looks cool too, that's a nice bonus.

Nah, just traditional. Then again, my clients seem to appreciate it, so it all works out. As for the watch, it all started as a simple question: what do you want in a pocket watch? For me, I wanted above all else accuracy, so I did a google search way back to find out what was considered the most accurate pocket watch to be manufactured. The Zenith came up. After finding the variations, I settled on getting the moonphase with roman numerals, but that meant waiting until one showed up at the price I was willing to go for in the condition that was fine with me. In some ways, the Citizen 0100 came up from the same concern; what if I wanted the most accurate wristwatch?

You can get awesome railroad-grade pocket watches for a fraction of the price: Illinois, Waltham, Ball (far more expensive due to the modern relation), and Hamilton all produce ones that can be pulled into very good tolerances by any competent watchmaker, and will always go well with a 3-piece. Search for a Hamilton 992...it's a great one to start with. There are multiple dial configurations, different movement variations, etc., but like all vintage watches, you have to do some research and know your shit before buying. I have a Waltham with a Vanguard movement but in side-winder configuration...apparently, it was the type of watch 'only a gentleman could afford' in 1909. Accurate, but lower power reserve and definitely far less resistant to positional variance.

Agreed about modern usage of a practical watch, for sure. I also don't prefer smartwatches due to the charging issues. I can therefore recommend the Citizen 0100 if you want one that is no fuss.

No, you burned thousands buying it because it has no resale value without papers. You've never ever sold a watch have you? Nobody, nobody fucking buys DESIRABLE watches without papers. Your shit isn't desirable. Your semi desirable watch, your one and only, is the beat up Speedy, but it's beat to shit. It's on the lowest end of naked watches, and nobody will buy it because nobody will trust you. You can sell it to a dealer for about half of what you paid - back then, not half of what it's going for right now. Believe you me. I've been there but I didn't buy that kind of shit at those prices, when I made my mistakes they were small. But you? Holy fuck. I couldn't move your collection to watch dealers I know personally. No way they would buy that shit without tearing me a new asshole.

A sexy watch, but I would prefer something with day and date instead, i work an irregular schedule and often get confused what day it is, a watch really helps. As for the exceptional accuracy, well the radio control makes up for that alright.

Casio Lineage and some Citizen Attesa are exactly what i need from a watch, and I like the narrow case on the 170 Lineage better. Just ordered it from Japan.

Why would you want it loose?
It's supposed to be tight enough it wouldn't roll over your wrist or slide past the bump but just loose enough your wrist isn't sweating underneath.

>> No.17853024

>>17853021
Not loose to the point of it rolling over of course, but loose enough that one can wear one's watch forward of the bump without any problems.

it's the "boyfriend watch" concept. wear an expensive watch that doesn't fit you in any way so that it looks like you're dating someone with money. make sure to subtly communicate that you don't even know what it is other than that it's expensive, otherwise the message will be lost

It's a bugatsa, you never had one?
I guess there is no winning with you guys. For once, I didn't wear my HOMOS or Credor while going outside and taking pics, and you went ahead and tried to make me feel bad because my watch os a three digit watch, and assuming that I'm skinny because my hands aren't american sized (I'm a handmodel anyway). But again, by explaining myself, I've given you what you want and now you will reply with the usual cherry picking and the "you mad" variations.
And you know what? I am mad right now, but in 5 minutes, I will be calm, but you will still be poor fags on 4chan /fa/ of all places, trying to make yourselves feel better by making others feel bad.
I later ate Kuroge Wagyu Beef btw.
