The reason people buy Rolex instead of JLC is that they feel a Rolex at 10k is actually worth 10k because that's what they can sell it for, while a JLC is totally unknown in terms of where it will go and how easy it will be to sell it. >What do people mean when they say 5 digit rolex
It refers to their reference numbers and also eras of Rolex design philosophy. (Note that there is no hard and fast breaks between the eras since 6-digit watches came out while they were still making 5-digit watches, and so forth.

the 4-digit era is vintage, like, in the case of the Explorer, the 1016. These are classic Rolexes but, actually, feel old and rattly. They were from back when Rolex sports watches were meant to be used hard and beaten to shit. This era gradually ended over the course of the 1980s.

The 5-digit era is just a Rolex is making the transition from tool watch to luxury piece. You start to see some nicer features like applied indices, improved bracelets, glossy dials, but they're still tool watches at heart. This era was short and ended in the early 2000s. Vintage lovers prefer the old-style feel of 4-digit watches, but can appreciate the improvements in the 5-digit watches.

The 6-digit era is what we're currently in. Rolex has completely transitioned to jewelry. These watches are considered gaudy by nearly all long-time Rolex fans. They're designed to look pretty and be impressive in a marketing brochure.
