Personally, I like the JLC better, but that's mostly because I am bored with steel sports watches. If you put the JLC on a chunky, casual strap, it could easily be an everyday watch. (JLC's got a nice quick-change system, so swapping straps is pretty quick and easy.)

Could you post an example of a older movement? I'm pretty sure this is a perception problem that comes from cheap movements trying to immitate expensive movements. Since you see the cheap ones more often you now associate that type of finishing with them rather than the high end. I really like the patrimony traditionelle but the movement is such a bore.
Comparing it to the other "entry level" dress, 3hander/smallseconds out there this movement is just visually unremarkable, not talking about the minutiae and finishing, just overall a downgrade from previous decades.
