Whenever I have to take my kid sister to school over half the people I see are dressed as retards. "-core" this, "-mode" that.

It wasn't anything special because it was just normal clothing. But it didn't look like your taste in fashion wasn't curated by algorithms on Instagram.
It objectively looks nicer because so little thought is put into it besides "oh, I like this."

I was in middle school then. Kids my age only cared about name brands, Anything else didn't matter. As long as you wore Abercombie, American Eagle, Hollister, etc you fit in. Abercrombie was definitely the most coveted brand since it was generally the most expensive.
But I also lived in a small town(~15,000 people), so take that with a grain of salt.
