those smells are connected with masculinity and luxury (at least for the cigar or pipe tobacco usually conjured by tobacco scents)
and they're just pleasant smells to most people, which is why they're components of many popular "date / clubbing" fragrances, such as D&G The One or CH Men Prive
of course a different interpretation of tobacco or leather can be much more out there and harsh as well. with leater accords especially there is a lot of variety, from castoreum leather stuff like Antaeus, to birch-based "russian leathers" like Cuir de Russie to Tuscan Leather and everything inspired by it

I don't own a full bottle of either of them though, I prefer Dior Homme Parfum as my modern leather because it has more going on and evolves much more on skin

speaking of frags "controversial" in this thread - I'm trying out my decant of Bois Imperial today
I don't really get the similarity to Grey Vetiver that much personally. it reminds me more of Terre d'Hermes with that spiciness, minerality and "transparent" modern character, but without the orange. and with that weird akigalawood note that's also in the Kenzo fragrances, but I like it more here
the mineral and spicy elements make it almost savory. strange, pleasant and unique.

I do wonder if this strange, abstract scent smells good to your average person though. my mom hates it, but she hates anything with patchouli. I'll have to ask my GF later this week

Not quite a turbo-Mormon, but I don’t need another collecting based hobby, and I really just want to smell good to women and people I meet in general. (That’s supposed to say normie, but it’s funnier, so I’m leaving it).
Context - 28, white dude, tall & slim, idk what else might be relevant haha
Currently have:
>Eros Flame - like this, might be too juvenile? Far better than original Eros
>Nautica Voyage - like this, mostly wear to the beach, gym, outdoor events in the summer
>CK One Shock - bought because it was $12 on sale, haven’t worn it much. Good for winter or dates? Idk when I’d wear something like this.
>Brut “cologne” splash- bought as a joke, but unironically love it. Would buy an EDT, but not sure if other people in their 20s would actually like this.
Considering:
>Dakar- it’s like $10, no downside to trying it, and I like the ‘80s aesthetic, so I want to try the old scents. Had a bottle of Drakkar a couple years ago, but idk if anyone else liked it on me.
>Cool Water - pretty much same reasons as above.

My bad for posting from a phone user and asking to be spoonfed info lmao. I do know to not blind buy, so it’d be helpful to get some direction for what samples I should try out first.
What holes do I need to fill in my “collection”, and what scenarios are the frags I already have good for? Assuming the basic collection from the FAQ - hot day, cold day, office, party, date. Also might be moving to California in the fall, so the cold day is semi-optional.
Price range - cheapie/designer pricing preferred

Impress might not be the right word. For what it’s worth, I’m not a total goober, and I do know the whole “panty dropper cologne” schtick is just clickbait.
I meant that I’m not necessarily trying to make an art statement with my fragrance, just looking to smell generally good.

>in my mind the fragrance equivalent of muzak is all the generic aquatics and blue frags out there
aquatics and blue frags are the equivalent of sterile, focus grouped radio music. in the case of aquatics, it’s kitschy radio rock, in the case of ambroxan blues it’s sex obsessed mumble trap or whatever you would call whatever the fuck has been playing on the radio for the last 4-5 years.

Look at it this way. If mainstream frags from the couldn't be pulled off in the modern era, they would have been discontinued. Drakkar Noir and Cool Water still exist because people still buy them. They're inoffensive and evocative of an old school aesthetic which isn't difficult to pull off assuming you don't dress like a broccoli hair zoomie in oversized t-shirts and alien looking yeezys or whatever the fuck.

Definitely not a broccoli head haha. I’d describe what I’m going for fashion wise as early ‘80s Kurt Russell, Harrison Ford, Springsteen type vibes. Like a guy who’s not a kid anymore, but who also isn’t a super formal lawyer or finance professional or whatever. If I was being self deprecating I’d say I dress like a lesbian from 1987, but that’s a bad habit that I’m trying to break.
>Put on a flannel shirt and aviators and spray on some cool water anon. You'll be fine, I appreciate what you're going for.
Thanks for the pep talk, you definitely get what I’m aiming at. Already have the flannel and aviators haha. In general, I want to smell broadly good, but I also don’t want to smell like every other twenty-something guy on the street or at the bar. I actually really like scents like BDC/Dylan Blue, but they also just kinda smell like body wash. What I want is to stand out a bit without being so radical that it’s just off putting to regular people.

worst i've encountered were cheap chink decant bottles that had a fishy smell to them but i only ever got that from gifted decants, never ones i bought myself.

Layton Parfums De Marly

Blind bought this because I've seen it mentioned online. It's warm, it's sweet, it's spicy, but they combine these profiles to make something really nice. Based on research, things "women like" are often things they would like to smell on themselves. Most people associate fragrances, when smelled on themselves or off a test strip, as something they can use to enhance their own body scent and help project it. There is a strong correlation between your serotype and fragrance preference. As a result, fragrance preferences have been attributed to the human leukocyte antigen and it has also been shown that humans tend to prefer the scent of humans with a HLA different than their own, as it likely gives an immunological advantage for their offspring.
So what a woman will like really only depends on what you like - if you choose your favorite fragrance and wear it, you will help project your fragrance preference and therefore serotype. If a woman with a sufficiently different serotype smells it off of you, she will like it.

Anyways. I came back from jacking a fat stack of test papers from notino. Now I can finish all of my samples. While I was there I had to try some stuff out to not look suspicious. Wanted to try some more ELDO, but of course they didn't have any at the store. They had only boring normalfag shit. They also had a "niche fragrances" section with Creed in it. Go figure. So I tried:

trash

already knew they were good

Walked up to the viktor rolf ones with my big fat stack in my hand and the tester bottles were all empty. Not that I wanted to try them, but it seems these are very popular with normalfags.

They'll think I'm gay.

Just picked this up from the pickup point and hope the heat hasn't fucked it too hard. Smells like every clean neroli scent used in any product ever but I like it. Sometimes you just want to smell clean and citrusy.

Well guys I got the 2 ml “whispers in the library” in the mail the other day.
It’s not what I was looking for to say the least.
It’s like a pleasant woody vanilla, but then with an added pungent smell that I can only describe as vomit. The type of vomit that’s hard to wash out of clothes.
Now it’s not the worst thing it’s just not something I want to wear or smell.
Definitely doesn’t smell like old books or that library smell I was looking for.
Still awaiting the Heeley Cardinal.
My expectations for it are higher.

Tauer has some awesome frags (LDDM, ACDD, Sundowner and LADAS are all full bottle worthy imho), too bad their base is a bit too similar (with a few exceptions ofc)

i managed to test the more interesting MMM Replica frags a few days ago (by the fireplace, jazz club, coffee break)
they are all incredibly bland and underwhelming, maybe suitable for 20something normies but def nothing to talk about in this thread

stop being autistic, literally noone will think that you are gay if you check this out (and they also won't care at all)
>mfw when noone cares

i also like Baraonda better
i have full bottles of BA, Baraonda, Pardon and Fantomas and roll-ons of Duro and Absinth from Nasomatto - sillage and longevity are as expected (very good) for all of them

omg I just bought this one and I FUCKING LOVE IT
such a great, natural scent with a bit of a vintage vibe (but in a positive way, not "smells like an old man" way)
opens with bitter lemons, than orange flowers slowly fading into jasmine to end in those nice amber notes
everything for less than 10 EURO (with delivery)

They aren’t even able to picture a physical thing as an abstract image in their head, I doubt they could understand old internet emojis like xD or even :)

I work in GIS for a private university.
My only other expensive habit is buying skins in Dota 2 as a form of psychological intimidation. I auck at the game so I just hope that using expensive skins will cause the enemy to assume I am good and play with less confidence as a result which will give me a better chance to win.
