Why are current entry level watches so NPC-tier? I hate to use this term but I really can't think of any other word. They look AI-generated. I went to the huge watch section of a departement store and all watches just look like copies of each other with minimal differences. Just the same classic designs you've seen for ages. I have to go way back into the past to find any interesting designs even if they might look outdated now.

I also don't get why you would ever buy some crappy quartz "fashion" watch over just using your smartphone or a smart watch. The only reason I see to get a oldschool watch is for the design and craftmanship but none of it is being offered in watches that cost <=1000€.

How come no industrial or graphic designer made a brand that makes good looking watches for a medium price? I am considering studying graphic and industrial design just to do it myself. Maybe I will also discover why no one tried to do this yet.

Problem I had is I legit wore my speedy to the shop every week and that was about it, Santos for anything social. Didn't plan on taking it on holiday/camping/swimming because of durability & potential repair cost - happy to have a GADA now.

>The Santos also makes the Explorer look miniscule.

Wierdly, this hasn't been an issue, and I thought it would be. Noone really talks about actually how bulky 36mm Rolex' wear - I wore my santos all weekend this weekend, and putting this back on it still feels more substantial even though it has a smaller 'apparent diameter'.

Thicker case/bracelet/clasp, more dial depth and just overall less elegant design-language make a huge difference.

Most of this is because you never wear two watches at once. The only time you ever compare the size is in group pics like yours.

Personally, I was really disappointed in the new 36mm Explorer. I sold my old 114270 a long time ago when I got bored with it, and it wore much bigger than the new 36mm. It had longer lugs, a 20mm bracelet and was a true 36mm. Between the dainty bracelet and the case that's actually 35mm it felt like a tiny toy to me.

I meant more going from one watch to another, sometimes you can definately feel a bump in size when you have been wearing something else for a couple days. I hated wearing my sinn 556 because of how wide the dial felt compared to my other watches at the time.

124270 to santos medium feels pretty natural.

>dainty bracelet
Yeah I never got this, maybe because I've never tried on the old one or owned a larger Rolex (have had a 126200 though). This clasp/bracelet feels way more substantial, and less of a taper than the 3861 speedy bracelet I had, dunno why that never gets any shit.

I'm not new to the hobby. I've been collecting seikos, JLCs, Rolexes, for many many years. Decades. It was only recently that the milk went absolutely fetid and curdled to shit.

The Rolex AD I had gone to for years suddenly started demanding I make 100k+ purchases to get in wait-lists for sports models. I had always patiently waited, and sometimes gotten discounts back in the day, for the models I wanted. Of course, I left and immediately tried other ADs, nearby and in neighboring states afterwards. They all had the same story. Purchase history, and mandatory kneepads. It was like bizzaro twilight zone shit. Yet, everywhere I looked online, grey dealers we're drowning in new stock. They were happy to make money off you hand over fist because of their nepotistic connections to Rolex ADs. Money corrupts absolutely. Rules for thee but not for me. Screw ADs and their grey market ticks/parasites.

I'm completely done with Rolex. I've sold my complete collection and am sticking to Omega, Breitling, and any other brand that doesn't treat their customers like some sort of cuckphillic sadistic fever dream.

Not sure what happened to this hobby but it's become a complete cesspit. From ADs demanding you kneel before them and give tributes daily, to the entire community being invaded by hypebeasts and social media driven rabid frenzy.

Good luck to you all who choose to stick with this brand. Thanks for reading. Won't be exposing the ADs lest they get firebombed. I'm done and out.

Yep, this was kind of what I meant, it's not always in the details of reps.

Rep owners become so obsessed with what's on their wrist, and by default (because they bought a rep to impress other people) what other people think of them, it's in their body language too.

You'll look at a boomers sub on the train and he won't even notice - a millenial rep owner will readjust and fidget with their sleeves as soon as someone in their generation is within distance of checking their rehaut alignment.

I'm not expecting Urwek tier complexity or Patek finishing out of entry level watches but some variation in design language.

The strangest thing to me is that right now flat design and minimalism is in and yet in watches, even the cheap ones, you see a lot of glossy finishes.

Ok maybe with inflation the 1000€ is too low nowadays but does going up to 2000€ even change things? Junghans is the only brand that stood out to me for making appealing watches in the lower price segment.

>What's wrong with it?
Typically, an open caseback is intended to show off the fine movement finishing. It's difficult, artisanal work and can be quite beautiful.
Rolex's movements are entirely machine finished (and in fact, Rolexes are entirely machine made, with the only remaining hand-work done on them being gem-setting for the diamond encrusted pieces) so they look a bit industrial.

Anon is throwing a hissy fit for...well, I don't know why since everyone has known forever what Rolex's movements look like. But I guess this is what is going to prevent him from buying a Daytona, right? :^)

The releases of the past decade have not inspired any desire in me whatsoever, quite the contrary; it makes me yearn for the ones that got replaced to make way for the new stuff.

The only two rolex models I Iike and want to own were discontinued in the past 15 years and both have been replaced by stuff that's technically superior but aesthetically worse.

I have a 1964 Weekdater. It was barely working when i got it, a random watchmaker in my small town was able to service it for a 100€ (cleaning, new mainspring, new gaskets, straightening the hands, regulation). He didn't do a good enough job so the problem repeated (he didn't use the right screw to secure the movement to the case) so i had to service it again, in an even smaller random town, and it cost me 40€ plus i got a free crystal. Has been working great since then.

I'm in construction, too.
Used to wear a W800H-1BV, and switched to a GWM5610-1.
Both watches are sufficiently durable. The strap on the W800H broke after 2 months. I've been wearing the gshock daily since August of last year, and so far it shows no signs of degrading. I wanted the atomic / solar functionality, and no longer wanted a negative display. Otherwise I would've just replaced the strap on the W800 with something other than the stock strap.
Hope that helps

Pay secondary market price in a private sale mate, retail is so high for explorers anyway, and its easy to tell a fake 124270 from real.

My dad already planned to give it to me, he had it resized for my wrist, didn't even know about the other watches until he showed me the resized Submariner.
Though I have to ask, why would you choose the Sub? It looks nice and the way it feels on my wrist is great, but I'm digging the blue Datejust in the middle, blue and silver is just a great combo for me.

I mean it's personal preference, but that Datejust (the Datejust II) is widely regarded as the most ugly & out of proportion Datejust ever - very bloated and chunky (which was fashionable with yuppies at the time), compared to classical Datejust proportions. It just had it's time and passed it.

The Daytona is more valuable (due to the gold & chronograph), but not considered as desirable as it isn't a steel model, or, once again made at a time when they were really making attractive models.

The Sub on the other hand will never go out of style, it's the reference (16610) before they made 'supercase' Submariners (116610) which again, are bloated and now out of fashion. So a great and more endearing reference you're getting - made before Rolex tried to lean more into status symbols with glossier dials & ceramic bezels.

I've been eyeing a Longines VHP for a while but the one I have in mind is only 50m WR which seems like a waste

30m is a waste, 50m is minimun usable. You can swim with 50m wr, in fact i have used a tomtom and a garmin specificly for triathlon which were both 50m wr.
