Hi /fa/,

What's a good quality Swiss or Japanese watch for under $700USD ($1000 AUD).
My daily is a G-shock, and I own a Citizen Eco-drive I bought for a wedding last year.

I just turned 35 so I'd like something casual, neat, simple and beautiful.
Something I can wear with a my jeans and runners with the kids as well as out to dinner with the wife.

- I'd rather an automatic movement, but not against a quartz movement.
- Don't want a sports or chronograph watch, I'll never use it's functions.
- Something I can enjoy looking at every time I check the time.
- Quality and craftsmanship

I'd like an Omega or Rolex one day, but not today.

Don't get hung up on marketing terminology. They call instant coffee "premium" too. You can ignore it like everyone else does.
Here's one of the watches that anon was talking about.

It's like 600 bucks. 40mm, just 12.5mm thick with a true GMT movement (compare that to the 15mm chungus from Tooter), 300m WR, ceramic bezel insert, bracelet with microadjust.

Sure, the looks are...not to everyone's taste, but the specs are pretty impressive for the price.

(How many responses to this post will fixate exclusively on how they think the watch is ugly?)

>>17604431
Nah, a cheap strap will always be a cheap strap.
You have a couple options, depending on how much you want to spend.
Places like Monstraps or DeLugs will make a custom strap for you using very fine calfskin. They'll be about 80-100 bucks, depending on the options you choose.
A place like Holbein's will sell you a Fluco Shell Cordovan strap for 50-70 bucks, and those are very nice.

Without telling you to consooom, I would be inclined to spend a little extra instead of trying to get the cheapest option. A great strap can make a watch look much classier, will last longer, and be more comfortable than a piece of shit.

Because it's not like there's a movement police who's ready to kick down the factory doors. "In-house" is not a legally-defined term.

There's certain terms you can't just put on a dial, like "Chronometer". ("Chronometer" means the movement has been certified as such by COSC.)
"Pilot" is another one. I think Zenith owns the rights to that.

A Rolex (sub) is what used to be a pro g-shock type of watch that got dolled up to be a $1000 watch, marked up to $8000 and sold for $15,000 and a sex act. Nothing wrong with the price or anything, the whole point is the price. It's a more more practical way to flash wealth without wearing a pound of gold around your neck.

Timex was never a good brand. Their old watches from before quartz were homages and fashion shit and all had crap movements that sucked when new and continually got worse from wear because apparently their parts are 100% metal-on-metal. Their modern quartz analogs are loud as fuck, all their non-hideous digitals are being scalped by zoomers and older gen A, and their mechanicals have chink or jap movements.

If all you care about is accuracy, a quartz will be off by a few seconds per month and a Rollie will typically be within a couple seconds per day.

Check'd and yes. Absolutely.
High-end watches feel more solid, sturdier, heavier unless it's made with titanium or something, the polishing is better with cleaner edges, more uniform and going in the same direction, tolerates wear better, movement behaves more predictable, and of course movement itself is better finished.

Rolex OP, explorer, datejust, daydate, and every watch by every other company that makes homages of those. Literally name a popular company, even a chinese homage company like San Martin, they probably have at least one 36mm model. Farer has a 36mm GMT.

Except in the case of a pilot chronograph like a Navitimer where there are just too many openings in the case to help it, don't bother buying a watch with less than 100m water resistance. It's a sign of low build quality. There's absolutely no reason a simple field watch like that shouldn't be 100m or more water resistant.

Vaer actually has a number of options for 36mm field-ish watches. You can get them in quartz or varying levels of automatic, they look decent quality and specs, there's an optional bracelet that looks decent with solid end links. I've seen them with 24 hour dials, 12 hour dials and explorer type 3-6-9 dials.

It depends on what you mean by "meme brand" I guess.

Are you the same guy that's been looking for 36mm watches here the last 3 days? What was your budget again? I don't remember. But the bottom line is there are plenty of options and you can go as high or low on the food chain as you want and find something. You can go to Rolex or swatch group, or you can go to San Martin. A lot of people thumb their nose at San Martin but the bottom line is they generally give you a lot of watch for the money.

Is there some particular dial style or complications you're looking for? What kind of activities are you planning to do while wearing this watch, are you going to be dressing up or doing desk work or hiking or hard manual labor? Traveling? Just want a fun piece of jewelry? Are there certain colors or metals or bezels or strap types you're looking for?

San Martin is so disappointing sometimes. Some people swear they like some of their Tudor homages better than the originals, but then they have stuff like their Datejust homages that have had absolutely FUBAR date windows and cyclopses for years. And they have to know it looks like shit because people talk shit about it all the time, but they won't change it. This watch could be pretty good looking if it just didn't have a date window that's too small under a magnifier that's way too strong.
